Review 18 Essential Songs [CASSETTE] / Janis Joplin:A slightly flawed collection drawn from the three-CD box set Janis, this still isn't a bad introduction to Haight-Ashbury's favourite blues shrieker. Skimming Cheap Thrills, Kosmic Blues, and Pearl, the disc catches some of Joplin's most stunning moments. In acknowledging the "rarities" aspect of the box, however, Essential occasionally goes wrong; the acoustic demo version of "Me and Bobby McGee" is incredibly touching, but a strange choice if there's room for only one. The must-have version remains the full-blown take heard on Pearl and Janis Joplin's Greatest Hits. That there's enough interest in Janis remaining to justify a set like this one is heartening, though. -Rickey Wright.

Review Dreams Come True [CASSETTE] / Lou Ann Barton:Austin's leading ladies of contemporary blues team up for the best album ever on club-owner Clifford Antone's label. The songs mix Ike Turner gems with three Ball compositions, two from bassist Sarah Brown, and others by Harold Battiste and Lavelle White. Which means the accent is on old-fashioned hooks and harmonies, perfectly executed right from the opening Ike and Tina hit "A Fool in Love. " All three women sing lead on that number, but otherwise they trade the spotlight. Ball's singing is tart 'n' sweet, with a hint of Texas dust. Her barrelhouse piano is the CD's most distinctive instrumental voice. And her "Snake Dance" is the biggest surprise, conjuring a New Orleans voodoo vibe. Strehli belts in clear, powerful tones-imagine Ma Rainey as a rocker. Barton sings sassy, with a slight sultry slur-also with the know-how to make "Good Rockin' Daddy" '50s perfect. Barton's career stalled after this 1990 session, while Ball and Strehli have continued to make excellent recordings. [+]-Ted Drozdowski.

Review The Collection / Bessie Smith:Backed by a rotating roster of jazz stars, Smith's potent delivery made her a peerless star of classic female blues, combining a fiercely independent, almost defiant approach with subtly effective tinges of vulnerability. Early cuts such as "Downhearted Blues," which supposedly saved Columbia records from extinction in 1923, and "T'aint Nobody's Bizness If I Do" feature only Clarence Williams's piano behind her, but it's her work with Louis Armstrong that truly stands out-Satchmo majestically bobs and weaves his cornet around Smith's lines on "St. Louis Blues," "Reckless Blues," "I Ain't Gonna Play No Second Fiddle," and the ragtime chestnut "You've Been a Good Old Wagon. " Unfortunately, Columbia offers buyers only two options: this cursory 16-song introduction or an exhaustive five-volume double-CD series. -Marc Greilsamer.
