Review Sounds From the Verve Hi-Fi / Various Artists:Get ready for your jazz education. The virgin, un-remixed tracks on Sounds from the Verve Hi-Fi, taken from the 1960s Verve vaults, were a major influence on Thievery Corporation's Rob Garza and Eric Hilton years before they spun epic documents such as The Mirror Conspiracy. Their time capsule is a bubbling, Brazilian soul-jazz blast, starting with the sensuous "Menina Flor" by Stan Getz and Luis Bonfa. Jimmy Smith's "Road Song" is a classic of '60s hard bop, while Kenyon Hopkins's "Hard Latin" shows the kind of groovy organ jazz that was popular. Things go left with Cal Tjader's "The Fakir", a day-glo Middle Eastern track influenced by Coltrane's "My Favorite Things", while Astrud Gilberto pulls a Nancy Sinatra on another freaky standout, "Light My Fire. Review The Chillout Annual 2002 / Various Artists:Although titled The Chillout Annual 2002, 2001 was the year of the chill-out compilation, getting off to a fine start with The Chillout Sessions, which spawned a plethora of imitations, some good, some bad. It seems the years of larging it had finally taken their toll on clubbers, who went in search of something a bit more calming and, well, chilled. The Ministry of Sound round off 2001 with The Chillout Annual 2002, a downbeat companion to their traditional clubber's bible, The Annual 2002. All the big names in the genre are present-Groove Armada, Zero 7, Lemon Jelly, Blue States, Kinobe, Nightmares on Wax and Bent, as well as down-tempo numbers from those normally associated with more up-tempo fare, such as Chemical Brothers, Faithless and Underworld. There are even the seemingly essential couple of token indie tracks from Badly Drawn Boy and Radiohead, which to be honest aren't really that welcome, but don't detract from proceedings that much. -Helen Marquis.

Review DJ Kicks - Nightmares On Wax / Nightmares On Wax:Nightmares on Wax's DJ Ease is best known for producing a pacific (even comedown) version of hip-hop or downtempo music. Compiling and mixing this album for the DJ Kicks series (which has included rapturously received collections from Stereo MCs and Kruder & Dorfmeister) he presents a subtle mix that moves from hazy breakbeat jazz into leftfield, modern (and politically correct) UK and US hip-hop. Using material from Mo'Wax (the high-velocity delivery of Blackalicious), A Tribe Called Quest, NYs Kenny Dope and Manchester's Grand Central, Ease scratches and fuses an expert selection of alt. hip-hop. At times he layers tunes which themselves sample other tunes to create a complex mesh of meaning and reference. He also includes a couple of his own productions and narcissistic sound-a-likes (DJ Trax's "This Place" is more N. O. W. than N. O. [+]W. "). Review Everything Is Wrong : DJ Mix Album / Moby:Moby is an ambitious man, both musically and philosophically, and that quality seeps into every aspect of Everything Is Wrong, from the wunderkind DJing that stretches the genre limits of techno to the angry, antiestablishment manifesto on the CD sleeve. The record's opening salvo of dancey club music sets the listener up for "All That I Need Is to Be Loved", which, out of nowhere, bludgeons would-be club kids with tuneless, mad vocals and punked-out guitar solos. The same bait-and-switch formula repeats twice on the CD at almost regular intervals in the industrial shriek of "What Love" and the sudden, slow, and acoustic bent and folksy vocals of "Into the Blue". All three shifts are jarringly abrupt. However, dance-floor continuity is in Moby's blood, and he uses these songs as parts one, two, and three of the underlying rage that drives the record's concept. Without these three tracks, in fact, you'd have a moody yet convincingly cohesive danceathon, bouncing between house breakbeats ("Feeling So Real", "Bring Back My Happiness") and blissed-out trance ("God Moving Over the Face of the Waters"). Instead, Moby expresses his bewildered and desperate view of modern life by periodically yanking away the escape of blind, danceable ecstasy, using that discontinuity to express the eyes-wide-open ruminations of a furious idealist. -Matthew Cooke.

Review Mind Elevation / Nightmares On Wax:Mind Elevation, the fourth album from Leeds-born DJ/producer and hemp hedonist George Evelyn, is another welcome hit of chilled beats, entrancing melodies and soothing soul-drenched vocals. While persevering with the use of live instrumentation, first introduced on 1999's Carboot Soul, Evelyn-a one-time judge of Amsterdam's High Times Cannabis Cup-has fortunately not sacrificed any of the dreamy ambience and looped samples that made 1995's Smokers Delight such essential post-club listening. He has though finally abandoned "Nights Interlude", an interpretation of Quincy Jones' "Summer In The City", that traditionally opened all prior Nightmares on Wax (NOW) albums. In its place lies "Mind Eye", a languorous spiralling instrumental groove that sets the pace way down low and stirs an entrancing breezy summer vibe that drifts throughout the album. Alongside the cool mix of mellow hip-hop, soulful r'n'b, and ambling ambient effects, comes the lilting if occasionally overstretched vocal talents of Chyne B. "Got To Know My Name", the most upbeat NOW track to date, sees her joyously waxing lyrical over an impossibly funky, retro-soul melody. Sadly her other contributions such as the r'n'b-lite "Date with Destiny" prove disappointing. But with the majority of the album bringing the feel of a joyous sun-drenched afternoon to your speakers, you can sit back and rest assured that Mind Elevation really does do what it says on the tin. -Christopher Barrett.

Review Flying Away / Smoke City:Though best known for the use of the single "Underwater Love" in a Levi's commercial, Smoke City's debut album, Flying Away, has a surprising amount to offer. Fronted by the multi-culti Nina Miranda-who answers the question of what a Brazilian-born Björk would sound like-the band combines an inherent bias towards tropicalia with the more electronic sounds of groups like Thievery Corporation and Portishead; the result varies between a dance jam like "Darkwalk" and the slinky "Mr. Gorgeous (and Miss Curvaceos)", between the darkly playful "Aguas De Marco" and the lush "With You". Gently inviting, but with significant substance, Flying Away is a long-term delight. -Randy Silver.

Review Accelerator / Future Sound Of London:Garry Cobain and Brian Dougans (FSOL) were the brains behind the evergreen classic "Papua New Guinea", which was first featured on Accelerator, their debut LP. In fact, Dougans had already written the hit "Stakker Humanoid" (under the name of Humanoid) but it was as Future Sound of London that he really gained crossover credibility. Accelerator is an apt title for this continuous mix of rhythmically propelled tracks. A real "journey" album, it takes in not only the lush, escapist tropical vibe of "Papua New Guinea", but also the melancholic "While Others Cry", the sharp strings and slender hooks of "Pulse State", and a heap of feistier tracks such as "It's Not My Problem", "Moscow", "Calcium" and "Expander". A well rounded, well produced and well memorable album, Accelerator deserves its classic status and will appeal to those who like music for cerebration as well as celebration. -Paul Sullivan.
