Review One Off Remixes and B-Sides / Bonobo:Okay, so the title of this compilation pretty much gives the game away, but if you think One Offs, Remixes and B Sides is just another of those second rate, label cash-ins, comprising of best forgotten off cuts, think again: its a musically sound retrospective featuring some of Simon Green's best and lesser known musical works. Heading as far back as 1999, to the imposing breakbeats of "Scuba" and the cinematic subtleties of the "The Scillian"-originally released in limited numbers on vinyl only-it charts his musical progress from unknown to ad agency and chillout favourite. Hence the inclusion of his ubiquitous remix of Pilotes "Turtle" and Quantics remix of the "The Plug" (used by One 2 One and BT respectively) and soon-to-be chillout classics like "Dismantling Frank" and "Magicman". Tunes which have helped cement his reputation as one of Brighton's best loved musical exports. Needless to say if you liked Animal Magic then you'll love this. -Found Sounds.

Review DJ Kicks - Nightmares On Wax / Nightmares On Wax:Nightmares on Wax's DJ Ease is best known for producing a pacific (even comedown) version of hip-hop or downtempo music. Compiling and mixing this album for the DJ Kicks series (which has included rapturously received collections from Stereo MCs and Kruder & Dorfmeister) he presents a subtle mix that moves from hazy breakbeat jazz into leftfield, modern (and politically correct) UK and US hip-hop. Using material from Mo'Wax (the high-velocity delivery of Blackalicious), A Tribe Called Quest, NYs Kenny Dope and Manchester's Grand Central, Ease scratches and fuses an expert selection of alt. hip-hop. At times he layers tunes which themselves sample other tunes to create a complex mesh of meaning and reference. Review Accelerator / Future Sound Of London:Garry Cobain and Brian Dougans (FSOL) were the brains behind the evergreen classic "Papua New Guinea", which was first featured on Accelerator, their debut LP. In fact, Dougans had already written the hit "Stakker Humanoid" (under the name of Humanoid) but it was as Future Sound of London that he really gained crossover credibility. Accelerator is an apt title for this continuous mix of rhythmically propelled tracks. A real "journey" album, it takes in not only the lush, escapist tropical vibe of "Papua New Guinea", but also the melancholic "While Others Cry", the sharp strings and slender hooks of "Pulse State", and a heap of feistier tracks such as "It's Not My Problem", "Moscow", "Calcium" and "Expander". A well rounded, well produced and well memorable album, Accelerator deserves its classic status and will appeal to those who like music for cerebration as well as celebration. -Paul Sullivan.

Review Adventures Beyond The Ultraworld / The Orb:The first Orb album was entirely new when it appeared: a low-key dance record, with echoes and swells more than up-front tunes, stoner-level dub bass, and all sorts of samples and sounds-seagulls, film clips, astronaut voices, bits of disco-fluttering through the mix like hallucinations. Essentially a techno album for tired dancers, it's held up nicely over time, thanks to its intricate, dreamy sonics. Beyond the classic "Little Fluffy Clouds"-a set of interlocking synth hooks and loping percussion, held together by a cut-up sample of Rickie Lee Jones talking about the skies of her youth-there are lots of mellow delights here, particularly the blissful reggae groove "Perpetual Dawn. Review The Antidote / Morcheeba:Since delivering their 1993 mini-opus Big Calm, second-generation trip-hop outfit Morcheeba have taken their hybrid blues/country/hip-hop/soul sound to an increasingly wider audience. Their music has suffered as a consequence, the sass and strut of the early days gradually suffocated by tired production clichés and vapid, big-name collabs (see Charango). The Antidote has none of that. It's a stonking return to form, as the band trade in their sultry singer Skye Edwards for the feistier, grittier Daisy Martey (ex-Noonday Underground), enlist experimental musician Rob Mullinder and create a massive, orotund and ear-catching psychedelic sound by recording everything live. The songs here are by far the best they've made in a decade, with catchy hooks and thoughtful lyricism matching the bright, eager production sound. The awe-inspiring confidence and thinly disguised joie de vivre that kickstarts the album lasts most of the way through too, marking the long-awaited final stage in the band's transmogrification from introspective dance act to kick-ass stadium rock band. -Paul Sullivan.

Review Abductions and Reconstructions / Thievery Corporation:It's fitting that Rob Garza and Eric Hilton, the duo behind Thievery Corporation, run both a club and a label that have the name Eighteenth Street Lounge: all of the music (which shares the same dubby, acid-jazz flavour) on the label is perfectly suited to the club. Abductions and Reconstructions, however, is different from previous ESL releases, such as Dubbed Out in D. C. , in that it's easily the label's most accessible album to date. It consists of 15 Thievery remixes of artists from Stereolab to David Byrne to Baba Maal and tends to be a lot more active than the duo's original compositions. Still, the tracks here bear only a passing resemblance to their original forms-in Thievery's hands, the songs are drawn out, tranced up, mellowed down, but each has its own flavour. The end result is an album that's both diverse and consistent and completely enjoyable. You could just as easily dance to these tracks as sit and lounge to them-the perfect soundtrack for either a great bar or your next party. -Randy Silver.

Review Classical Chillout / Virgin TV:The only thing wrong with this compilation is the title: "Chillout" hardly seems the right word to describe such a well-balanced collection which, while it includes such relaxing music as Debussy's Clair de lune and Vaughan Williams' The Lark Ascending, also has pieces as wired as Steve Reich's exciting Nagoya Marimbas and Simon Jeffes' Perpetuum Mobile. All the performances are good and have been juxtaposed with some wit: a piece which celebrates nocturnal luminescence, Clair de lune, is followed by a work traditionally performed in darkness, Allegri's Miserere. The aria "Ebbenne andrò lontana" (used in the film Diva) in which a woman reveals that she is going to live on the freezing summit of a mountain, is followed by the slow movement of Vivaldi's "Winter". There are no notes, translations or blurbs, so if you want to find out more about a piece you'll have to pull out the encyclopaedia or get on the net. But that aside, this is a thoroughly enjoyable compilation. -Warwick Thompson.

Review Fragments Of Freedom / Morcheeba:In which Clapham's dreamiest, downbeatiest, de-loveliest trio takes it uptown, takes it to the bridge, and even-on the phatter-than-phat "In The Hands Of The Gods"-takes it over to Biz Markie's house. If you aren't frightened of sudden bursts of extroversion or a whiff of the mainstream any more than those stray dismissals of Morcheeba's oeuvre as "coffeetablist" put you off, you're in for a treat. Albeit a more in-your-face variety than that of luscious predecessor Big Calm, which sold sneaky, word-of-mouth millions while still seeming like an irresistibly hoarded secret between you, Paul Edwards' turntables, brother Ross' sleepy slide guitar and Skye Edwards' mouth-watering voice. Fortunately, there's enough pop here for everyone to take a bite: bright, radio-friendly gospel choruses ("Rome Wasn't Built In A Day"), shameless disco strings ("Shallow End"), wickedly itchy grooves and Chic-style struts ("Be Yourself", "Let It Go"). Melancholics will doubtless prefer the hazily elegiac title track and hypnotic "World Looking In", but the album's real highlights radiate pure exuberance instead. And judging from the Grandmaster Flash-ised roller-rink glee of "Love Sweet Love", or Skye and rapper Bahamadia biggin' up the ladies in "Good Girl Down", rest assured that if any coffee tables were involved in the production of this recording, they were treated with a complete lack of respect. -Jennifer Nine.
