Review Everything Is Wrong / Moby:Moby is an ambitious man, both musically and philosophically, and that quality seeps into every aspect of Everything Is Wrong, from the wunderkind DJing that stretches the genre limits of techno to the angry, antiestablishment manifesto on the CD sleeve. The record's opening salvo of dancey club music sets the listener up for "All That I Need Is to Be Loved", which, out of nowhere, bludgeons would-be club kids with tuneless, mad vocals and punked-out guitar solos. The same bait-and-switch formula repeats twice on the CD at almost regular intervals in the industrial shriek of "What Love" and the sudden, slow, and acoustic bent and folksy vocals of "Into the Blue". All three shifts are jarringly abrupt. However, dance-floor continuity is in Moby's blood, and he uses these songs as parts one, two, and three of the underlying rage that drives the record's concept. Without these three tracks, in fact, you'd have a moody yet convincingly cohesive danceathon, bouncing between house breakbeats ("Feeling So Real", "Bring Back My Happiness") and blissed-out trance ("God Moving Over the Face of the Waters"). Instead, Moby expresses his bewildered and desperate view of modern life by periodically yanking away the escape of blind, danceable ecstasy, using that discontinuity to express the eyes-wide-open ruminations of a furious idealist. -Matthew Cooke.

Review Before the Dark / Cinema:While Crawford Tate and Gregor Reid's early excursions into the widecreen world of rooftop chases, knife-edge suspense thrillers and 60s cop themes, may have spoken the cinematic language of Schiffrin, Carpenter and Bud et al, Before The Dark-their debut long play-indicates a very definite change of direction. That's not to say it doesn't still engender similar cinematic sentiment; it does, it's just been tempered through a more hands-on approach, including the use of less samples and more original and organic, live instrumentation. Check the sturdy hip-hop beats and haunting piano melodies of "Pendulum" and "Reflections" or the whining police sirens and dark breakbeats of "Head Spin" which still beg for celluloid attention. It's within tracks like "After Dark", "Lost" and "Crash And Burn" however that the change is perhaps most apparent. Bright, optimistic disco-house, light bossa jazz and shape-shifting, synth-heavy guitar rock, are not maybe what you've come to expect from the Glasweigen duo, but then again, that's probably exactly the kind of response they were looking for. -Found Sounds.

Review Melody A.M. [VINYL] / Royksopp:Melody AM, the debut from Norwegian outfit Royksopp, is widely being touted for "classic" status. Far from "just another chill-out" album, this is a richly textured feast of warm, late-night food for the soul. The songs seem to reflect the extremes of the environment they were produced in-the sorrowful "She's So", a tribute to almost 24-hour winter darkness of Royksopp's motherland, and the lilting warmth of "Royksopp's Night Out", a literal dance in the midnight sun. In the tradition of bands such as Air and Groove Armada, this is a sound that could almost make it to the dance floor-if it could bear to leave the comfort of the sofa behind. The infectious "Poor Leno" hints at what their dance productions (and they do exist) might sound like, and as a whole, Melody AM will leave you wanting to get your hands on anything and everything else "the 'Sopp" have ever touched. -Ruby Tuesday.

Review FSOL Present Amorphous Androgynous: The Isness / Future Sound of London:The Isness comes over six years after the duo's future-shock treatise, Dead Cities. FSOL's Garry Cobain and Brian Dougans have returned with a psychedelic songfest that exchanges electronic ambient loops, trip-hop beats and alien textures for backwards guitars, sitar symphonies and Donovan-style folk songs. You can still hear the FSOL intellect and collagist aesthetic, but the duo have abandoned the sequencer-created hallucinations of their 1994 masterpiece, Lifeforms. Drums, brass, strings, percussion and vocals were recorded live in their London studio, and the sounds were then filtered through a computer and turned into a cosmic song cycle. With Mellotrons surrounding Cobain's ethereal vocals, the "I Am the Walrus" dirge of "The Mello Hippie Disco Show" collides with the bucolic serenity of "Goodbye Sky". "The Lovers" recreates a boiling Hendrix funk meltdown, "Galaxial Pharmaceutical" recalls the epic bluster of Pink Floyd, and "Guru Song" evokes the droning loops of the Beatles' "Tomorrow Never Knows". It all works as magically as a tab of Timothy Leary's finest. The Isness is a psychedelic classic, 30 years late. -Ken Micallef.

Review Moon Safari / Air:Moon Safari, the first album proper by this pair of middle-class Frenchmen, easily survives unscathed from its billing as that most deadly of sub-genres: dinner party music. True, Moon Safari, with its blatant bliss-provoking easy listening chimes, sits well beside Everything But the Girl's Walking Wounded or Portishead's Dummy, but the album is steeped in too much musical verve and gallic humour to become as dull as Chardonnay. "Sexy Boy", the first single, is a rock-out slab of electronica about a toy monkey, for instance-hardly the thing to discuss in polite society. This album's highs come with their two marriages with the contributing vocals of American Beth Hirsch. "All I Need" and "You Make It Easy" are shockingly successful, with Hirsch bringing gravitas and sincerity, flagging the album with strong emotional pointers in the midst of their musical adventures. If you didn't know, you'd think her words were sampled from a lost jazz classic-that's how good this record sounds. -Charlie Porter.
