Review Bicycles and Tricycles / Orb:Best known as the prime originator of ambient house back in the early 90s, Alex Paterson has always managed to avoid stagnation. With Bicycles & Tricycles he extends his parameters even further. "From a Distance", featuring vocals from the Corporal and a sample of Grace Jones's "Slave to the Rhythm" pulses and stomps like an electro glitter band. The dark, dubby "Prime Evil", with its creepy laughter, dramatic climax and a portentous, Lovecraftian narration courtesy of Neville Jason, has an impressive Italian horror-movie feel, while "Kompania" has you thinking of Pink Floyd jamming with a crazed campanologist in deep space. It's impressively ambitious stuff. But there's also plenty of humour, stretching from the CD case, through to "The Land of Green Ginger", with its clattering percussion and cheerful whistling, where Jason somehow keeps a straight face in recounting a potty tale of wizards and enchantments. This is the way throughout, with Paterson veering between playfulness and serious intent. In this he has much in common with the psychedelic revolutionaries of the mid-60s. -Dominic Wills.

Review The Chillout Annual 2002 / Various Artists:Although titled The Chillout Annual 2002, 2001 was the year of the chill-out compilation, getting off to a fine start with The Chillout Sessions, which spawned a plethora of imitations, some good, some bad. It seems the years of larging it had finally taken their toll on clubbers, who went in search of something a bit more calming and, well, chilled. The Ministry of Sound round off 2001 with The Chillout Annual 2002, a downbeat companion to their traditional clubber's bible, The Annual 2002. All the big names in the genre are present-Groove Armada, Zero 7, Lemon Jelly, Blue States, Kinobe, Nightmares on Wax and Bent, as well as down-tempo numbers from those normally associated with more up-tempo fare, such as Chemical Brothers, Faithless and Underworld. There are even the seemingly essential couple of token indie tracks from Badly Drawn Boy and Radiohead, which to be honest aren't really that welcome, but don't detract from proceedings that much. -Helen Marquis.

Review Fragments of Freedom [Limited] - Australia / Morcheeba:In which Clapham's dreamiest, downbeatiest, de-loveliest trio takes it uptown, takes it to the bridge, and even-on the phatter-than-phat "In The Hands Of The Gods"-takes it over to Biz Markie's house. If you aren't frightened of sudden bursts of extroversion or a whiff of the mainstream any more than those stray dismissals of Morcheeba's oeuvre as "coffeetablist" put you off, you're in for a treat. Albeit a more in-your-face variety than that of luscious predecessor Big Calm, which sold sneaky, word-of-mouth millions while still seeming like an irresistibly hoarded secret between you, Paul Edwards' turntables, brother Ross' sleepy slide guitar and Skye Edwards' mouth-watering voice. Fortunately, there's enough pop here for everyone to take a bite: bright, radio-friendly gospel choruses ("Rome Wasn't Built In A Day"), shameless disco strings ("Shallow End"), wickedly itchy grooves and Chic-style struts ("Be Yourself", "Let It Go"). Melancholics will doubtless prefer the hazily elegiac title track and hypnotic "World Looking In", but the album's real highlights radiate pure exuberance instead. And judging from the Grandmaster Flash-ised roller-rink glee of "Love Sweet Love", or Skye and rapper Bahamadia biggin' up the ladies in "Good Girl Down", rest assured that if any coffee tables were involved in the production of this recording, they were treated with a complete lack of respect. -Jennifer Nine.

Review Furious Angels / Rob Dougan:Rob Dougan may not be a household name, but his debut single (featured here on Furious Angels) could barely have escaped anyone's attention. Originally released on James Lavelle's Mo Wax label in 1995, "Clubbed To Death", with its melancholic string sweeps, doom-laden bass and dogmatic break-beats, became not only the ultimate trip-hop record, but one of the most licensed tracks ever. Yet despite generating $1. 5million from its use in films like The Matrix and countless adverts, Mo Wax were less than enthusiastic about Dougan's debut album; eventually he would fund most of its six years of recording himself. On first listen, Mo Wax's reluctance is understandable. Rather than playing up "Clubbed to Death"'s demonic dance element, Furious Angels treads an altogether more cinematic path. Indeed "Will You Follow Me?" and "Instrumental", are straight Star-Wars-style classical pieces. Elsewhere, when he does fuse his lavish orchestration with dank beats, as with "Left me for Dead" and the title track, the clattering rhythm track is merely an eerie backdrop for some staggering string arrangements and Dougan's vocals. A striking resemble to Chris Rea aside, with his phlegmy rasp he manages to make the already murky "There's Only Me" and "I'm Not Driving Anymore" all the more desperate and wretched. All in all a phenomenally dark album-part Portishead, part Massive Attack, part deranged crooner- that's never less than epic. [+]-Dan Gennoe.

Review Suzuki in Dub / Tosca:As is the vogue to release alternative versions of artist albums, Tosca continue the trend, commissioning a like-minded array of beat technicians to re-jig and modify aspects of the original Suzuki. With the emphasis on "aspects", Messrs Dorfmeister and Huber open the masters to only a handful of tracks from Suzuki with "Annanas" and "Busenfreund" claiming three and four remixes respectively. Suffice to say, those involved, including Burnt Friedman dZhian+Kamien, and Uko, actively instigate their own plans on the blueprints provided ensuring that the album flows with distinctive ease. Although titled with the In Dub postscript, the result is an album that carries the attitude of dub, rather than the traditionalist notion put to effect by other albums, such as the Mad Professor's collaboration with Massive Attack on No Protection. Therefore expect to hear elements of panning, reverb and bass intensity, but all within a framework that each of the producers involved are known for. Philippe Lussan, for example, transposes "Busenfreund" onto his own deep 4/4 template, Baby Mammoth take it in a lighter mid-tempo break-led direction, Walkner. Mostl a little tougher, but all with the original piano line and fx included. G-Corporation come closest to the literal brief with their take on "Annanas", a spacious bass-led relaxant, with sparse rimshot drums and melodica. An adequate late-night accompaniment. -Found Sounds.
