Review The Classic Chillout Album / Various Artists:One of the more high profile and successful chillout compilations of 2001, The Classic Chillout Album is a double-disc affair with all the right hits in all the right places. The big guns are here on disc one with Kinobe's "Slip Into Something. ", Groove Armada's "At the River" and Jakatta's "American Dream" to name but a few. Disc two is a bit more new-age with Deep Forest's "Sweet Lullaby", "Sadness" by Enigma and "Silence" by Delerium but there are some genuinely beautiful pieces from the likes of Morricone ("Chi Mai") and Robin Young-Smith ("Flower Duet") which sit more than comfortably with their downbeat dance cousins. -Georgina Collins.

Review Furious Angels / Rob Dougan:Rob Dougan may not be a household name, but his debut single (featured here on Furious Angels) could barely have escaped anyone's attention. Originally released on James Lavelle's Mo Wax label in 1995, "Clubbed To Death", with its melancholic string sweeps, doom-laden bass and dogmatic break-beats, became not only the ultimate trip-hop record, but one of the most licensed tracks ever. Yet despite generating $1. 5million from its use in films like The Matrix and countless adverts, Mo Wax were less than enthusiastic about Dougan's debut album; eventually he would fund most of its six years of recording himself. On first listen, Mo Wax's reluctance is understandable. Rather than playing up "Clubbed to Death"'s demonic dance element, Furious Angels treads an altogether more cinematic path. Indeed "Will You Follow Me?" and "Instrumental", are straight Star-Wars-style classical pieces. Elsewhere, when he does fuse his lavish orchestration with dank beats, as with "Left me for Dead" and the title track, the clattering rhythm track is merely an eerie backdrop for some staggering string arrangements and Dougan's vocals. A striking resemble to Chris Rea aside, with his phlegmy rasp he manages to make the already murky "There's Only Me" and "I'm Not Driving Anymore" all the more desperate and wretched. All in all a phenomenally dark album-part Portishead, part Massive Attack, part deranged crooner- that's never less than epic. [+]-Dan Gennoe.

Review Ambient / Moby:Long before music marketers coined the term ambient to describe ethereal electronic music that's too slow to dance to, Moby had already written several songs that fit nicely into this genre. They are included, along with newer material, on this album. Moby's more conventional song structures will appeal to those who find Robert Fripp and Brian Eno's experimentation unpalatable. Review Bicycles and Tricycles / Orb:Best known as the prime originator of ambient house back in the early 90s, Alex Paterson has always managed to avoid stagnation. With Bicycles & Tricycles he extends his parameters even further. "From a Distance", featuring vocals from the Corporal and a sample of Grace Jones's "Slave to the Rhythm" pulses and stomps like an electro glitter band. The dark, dubby "Prime Evil", with its creepy laughter, dramatic climax and a portentous, Lovecraftian narration courtesy of Neville Jason, has an impressive Italian horror-movie feel, while "Kompania" has you thinking of Pink Floyd jamming with a crazed campanologist in deep space. It's impressively ambitious stuff. But there's also plenty of humour, stretching from the CD case, through to "The Land of Green Ginger", with its clattering percussion and cheerful whistling, where Jason somehow keeps a straight face in recounting a potty tale of wizards and enchantments. This is the way throughout, with Paterson veering between playfulness and serious intent. In this he has much in common with the psychedelic revolutionaries of the mid-60s. -Dominic Wills.

Review A Word of Science: the 1st & Final Chapter / Nightmares On Wax:Nightmares on Wax's A Word of Science was recorded at the height of happy hardcore fever that gripped the UK in the early 1990s. Alongside groups such as the Prodigy, LFO and A Homeboy, a Hippy and a Funki Dred, Nightmares on Wax introduced a hard electronic sound that tore up house music and overthrew acid. "A Case of Funk" has that typically hysteric, operatic sound that made early-1990s Brit electronic music the rush that it was; the same goes for the squidgy synths and tribal beats of "Coming Down". Both tunes reflect the increasing influence of Ecstasy on the rave scene as mellow euphoria was replaced by a sharper, teeth-grinding groove. However, "MegaDonutz" starts as typical hardcore but warps into a 45 King style hip-hop production while "Back in time" is down-tempo and uses an old Bizmarkie sample-even with the rave scene around them, NOW went back to their original hip-hop roots. As a snapshot of British dance music at the turn of the 1990s, A Word of Science works well, though not as good as the many compilations out there that cover this period more comprehensively such as Pioneers of the Hypnotic Groove. -Jake Barnes.

Review Jump Leads / Fila Brazillia:Jump Leads is the eighth full-length LP from Hull-based sound sculptors Fila Brazillia-an undeniably impressive achievement in the often ephemeral world of electronic music. How they've fitted it in is anybody's guess, what with their recent Another Late Night and Brazilification mix albums, a world tour (first time with a live band) and setting up their own label 23 Records. For their latest document the duo keep the emphasis on accessible and musical yet blatantly quirky sounds, infusing their beats with analogue warmth, live instrumentation and song-writing prowess. Like friends and fellow Humberside-dwellers Baby Mammoth, this year has seen the band plug into some of the varied and musical upbeat sounds currently around, though their album also features plenty of their usual downtempo material. Mellow tracks like recent single "Spill The Beans"-which uses the velvety vocal talents of Steve Edwards-highlight their knack of writing catchy hooks but there is a wide range of other material here such as the warm, chunky funk of "DNA", the kooky feel of "We Build Arks" and the dark, percussive Brazilian swing of "Percival Quintaine". An album of many colourful and exotic shades Jump Leads can only please Fila fans and newcomers alike. -Paul Sullivan.

Review Twoism / Boards Of Canada:Almost as elusive as the act themselves, Twoism has been exchanging hands for anything up to £800 since its original 100 copy vinyl release back in 1995. Available for the first time on CD, re-cut and re-mastered, this near-mythical collection of minimal ambient treasure is as listless, pastoral and evocative as its follow-up, 1998's Music Has The Right Children and this year's Geogaddi. Even more understated than its successors, Twoism drifts with indolent beats and droning keyboard hooks. Hidden away in their remote Hexagon Sun studio in the highlands of north Scotland, Marcus Eoin and Mike Sandison inhabit a reclusive windswept world that is too damn cold to produce chill-out music. What you have here are delicate, deceptively simple, emotive soundscapes that bore right to the heart of the listener and refuse to be ignored.
