Review Adam Sandler's Eight Crazy Nights [2002] (REGION 1) (NTSC) / Columbia TriStar:Adam Sandler fans will find the animated movie 8 Crazy Nights to be another flowering of Sandler's absurdist goofiness; but people who find Sandler completely annoying will be triply annoyed by it, because Sandler does the voices for three different characters: Davey Stone, a boozing, belching, self-loathing loser who hates the holidays; Whitey, a tiny old man who tries to rehabilitate Davey; and Eleanor, Whitey's neurotic twin sister, who seems not to have left her house in years. Fans will find the slapdash musical numbers and scatological humour hilarious; foes will find them tiresome and banal. But even Sandler's advocates won't care about the by-the-numbers plot of holiday redemption; you see, Davey's parents died on the first night of Hanukkah, and he just needs to cry about it. Sandler's best when he's walking that line between stupid and smart-ass. When he gets sentimental, it's trouble. -Bret Fetzer.

Review Second Star to the Left [2001] (REGION 1) (NTSC) / MGM:Second Star To the Left is the kind of festive fare that the BBC excels at. The voice actors Hugh Lawrie, Mark Williams and Barbara Windsor are perfectly cast; the characters are appealing; and the whole tale glows with gentle humour and unashamed sentimentality. It's Christmas Eve and Archie the rabbit, voiced with many a "lumme" and "cripes" by the inimitable Hugh Lawrie, is bored-so bored that he's counting stars. When a present falls from Santa's sleigh as it passes overhead, Archie sees that this is his big chance for adventure: there will be a very disappointed child somewhere if the gift isn't delivered by Christmas morning. So Archie and his friends, Duke the guinea pig (Williams) and Babs the hamster (Windsor), set out to deliver the present to its rightful owner-"three houses past the duckpond, take the second star to the left". Second Star to the Left is an amiable tale about having the courage to try and being able to make a difference-the perfect way to get into the festive mood. After all, if you can't wallow in a bit of unabashed sentimentality at Christmas, when can you? -Helen Baker The main feature is followed by a 10-minute extra consisting of interviews with Barbara Windsor and Graham Ralph, the story's creator. Total running time: 36 minutes approximately.

Review A Christmas Carol [1999] (REGION 1) (NTSC) / Warner Home Video:Standing out in the crowded field of screen adaptations of the classic Dickens novel A Christmas Carol is hard to do, but this version pulls it off. When a transparent Jacob Marley walks through Ebenezer Scrooge's apartment door, you know you're seeing something both timeless and contemporary. Other strategically placed special effects-a funnel cloud that transports Scrooge and the ghost of Christmas present, the hollow spectre of Christmas future-keep you riveted without slipping into anachronism. But, as good as the technology is, the performances are what really power this 93-minute television interpretation. Patrick Stewart brings a depth to Scrooge that allows the character to go beyond the cartoonish qualities that have made him a Christmas mainstay. That doesn't mean he's any less heartless with his hapless employee Bob Cratchit (Richard E. Grant) or any less dismissive of his well-meaning nephew. A frail-looking Joel Grey makes an excellent ghost of Christmas past, and a superb cast ably fill the remaining roles. Director David Jones, shooting on location in England and at Ealing Studios, has achieved a balance of science and sentiment that will help this version hold up for many years to come. -Kimberly Heinrichs.

Review A Tweenies Christmas / Tweenies:A Tweenies Christmas comes hot on the heels of their sell-out stadium tours, the success of their debut album Friends Forever and the continued success of their TV show. Filled equally with new compositions and cover versions of favourite festive tunes (there's seven of each on the album), this is the ideal collection for getting children (and parents) into the Christmas party mood. Opener "I Believe in Christmas" is a swinging, pop number in the style of S Club 7's "Reach" but with added sleigh bells. If it wasn't for the baby-speak Tweenie vocals, it would be difficult to differentiate between this track and Rachel and Co "doing their thing". Another new tune "Light Up the World" is a warm, feel-good song set on Christmas Eve, while "Fab-A-Rooney Christmas" is the Tweenies jovial Christmas anthem. At times though the toddler-talk (or singing) does complement the song, for instance Milo's nasal rendition of "Merry Xmas Everybody" almost resembles Noddy Holder's blaring vocals on the Slade original. -John Galilee.

Review A Danish Christmas / Naxos:Offering 77 minutes of music and a 28-page booklet with Danish and English texts, A Danish Christmas is an anthology comparable to the best full-price releases. Insightful notes by Andrew Smith explain the significance of carols in the traditional Danish Christmas celebrations, helpfully setting the scene for this celebratory collection. Here is elegantly appealing music by composers famous (Carl Nielson's tender, "My Heart Always Wanders"), unfamiliar (Egil Harder's "The Christmas Tree With Its Decorations") and unknown-for many of these carols derive from the folk tradition. "Praise Be To You, Jesus Christ" is one of four carols to feature exquisite soprano singing from one of Musica Ficta's excellent soloists, though the majority depend purely upon the ensemble's finely balanced choral sound. Formed in 1996 by composer and conductor Bo Holton, this group are splendidly accomplished, whether it be with simple monophonic lines, or the more complex and thrilling polyphony of "What A Great Throng And Noise". They have also recorded a programme of church music by Ockeghem, which includes a fine Requiem. -Gary S. Dalkin.
