A lot has changed since the original 70s-era gang of Scooby-Doo fans gave way to today's followers of the hipster mystery cartoon series. Scooby-Doo and the Alien Invaders contains all the familiar elements; even the groovy green Mystery Machine makes a comeback, but it isn't as reliable as it used to be. At the outset of Alien Invaders, it breaks down, leaving the crime-solving crew stranded in a creepy desert town overrun by aliens. From there, the plot unwinds faster than Scooby can down a box of his namesake snacks. A band of swollen-headed purple and green space guys-Zoinks-send the terrified teens scrambling for cover, but it's not long before the quick-witted gang figures out that there's a team of bad guys behind the bug-eyed masks. That's not to say, though, that real-life aliens aren't also roaming the streets, as Shag and Scoob (who hook up in an unprecedented Scooby-Doo romance with a peace sign-wearing babe and her equally hip dog) discover in the course of clearing out of the phoney aliens' hair-raising path. To longtime viewers, the love angle seems unsettling; it steals from the tightness of the mystery team. Still, with so much creepy fun to get caught up in, it's a minor complaint. Scott Innes, the modern-day voice of both Shaggy and Scooby, nails both parts, and Jennifer Love Hewitt fans also will want to tune in-she sings the Scooby theme song. -Tammy La Gorce, Amazon. [+]

Robbie the Reindeer is as short as many of the made-for-TV classics that have preceded it. However, so much action, zippy dialogue and witty visual puns have been packed into its 29-minute running time that you'd swear it was longer. The content of the film, like many new animations and cartoons, is geared slightly in favour of older audiences, because of its sexual innuendos and adult comedy, but the kids will love the slapstick comedy and loveable characters. Robbie's father is another stop-motion favourite, Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer, and pop is keen to see his loveable-but lazy-son follow in his famous hoof prints. The adult theme continues in the shape of the storyline, which was actually inspired more by Rocky than by Rudolph. As in Rocky, there's a supportive female (Donner) and a crusty trainer (Old Jingle). Together they help Robbie get in shape for the Reindeer Games, where he'll have the chance to show Santa whether he has the right stuff or not. Fans of Aardman Animations should appreciate the detailed animation and clever humour. The cream of Britain's comic crop provides the voices, including Jane Horrocks as Donner. Robbie Williams narrates the story, and Mark Knopfler provides the music. [+]

Obviously the Disney suits gave more than two figs about the legacy from the first Beast film, as they reassembled the former cast and spent some cash on production and tune-smithing for this straight-to-video effort. The events unfold between the time in the first film where Belle bartered herself to the Beast and her later return to the village to save her father. So the Beast's heart still hasn't been melted yet and he's susceptible to the inky persuasions of Forte (Tim Curry), a malevolent pipe organ (and former music teacher to the prince). Belle is still trying to win over the Beast and decides that bringing Christmas to the castle will be the way to do it. Please control that gag reflex for this does work remarkably well and though entirely unnecessary and certainly not a complement to the original, it doesn't tarnish its good name. -Keith Simanton.

Adam Sandler fans will find the animated movie 8 Crazy Nights to be another flowering of Sandler's absurdist goofiness; but people who find Sandler completely annoying will be triply annoyed by it, because Sandler does the voices for three different characters: Davey Stone, a boozing, belching, self-loathing loser who hates the holidays; Whitey, a tiny old man who tries to rehabilitate Davey; and Eleanor, Whitey's neurotic twin sister, who seems not to have left her house in years. Fans will find the slapdash musical numbers and scatological humour hilarious; foes will find them tiresome and banal. But even Sandler's advocates won't care about the by-the-numbers plot of holiday redemption; you see, Davey's parents died on the first night of Hanukkah, and he just needs to cry about it. Sandler's best when he's walking that line between stupid and smart-ass. When he gets sentimental, it's trouble. -Bret Fetzer.

Review Bach - Christmas Oratorio (excs) / Naxos:

Less familiar than Bach's Passions, the Christmas Oratorio (1734) is a sacred celebration on a comparably expansive musical canvas. Conceived as a complete work sub-divided into six separate cantatas, each intended for use on a different one of the 12 days of Christmas in the churches of Leipzig, the complete performance is available as a three-disc set, while this collection contains 71 minutes of highlights. Further complicating matters, Bach reused material from existing secular works, nevertheless creating a new and seamless whole. Happily the release comes with useful notes outlining the origin of the work, together with full texts in German and English. Choosing these selections must have been an unenviable task; all six cantatas are represented, with chorales and arias evenly balanced throughout the programme. Soprano Ingrid Kertesi's aria from Part 4, which utilises a natural echo, is particularly beautiful, while throughout the performances and recorded sound are excellent. Substantially the same forces have also recorded Bach's St. Mathew Passion, given the highest rating by the Penguin Guide, as well as several programmes of Bach's cantatas. Not just for Christmas, whatever the season, this is wonderfully uplifting music. -Gary S. [+]
