Review The Genuine Article / Howlin' Wolf:This magisterial set opens with 1951's "Moanin' At Midnight", recorded for Sun Records, but appearing on Chicago's Chess label the next year. It was for Chess that the Wolf would record his formidable body of work, only entering the studio at the age of 41. Chester Burnett was given his performing name as a child, by his grandfather. He was taught guitar by Charley Patton and, later, harmonica by Sonny Boy Williamson II, his raw-throated delivery possessed of an unequalled authority, becoming a prime influence on later artists like Captain Beefheart and Tom Waits. The Wolf's fearsome personal reputation is audible in his music, charged with a trembling violence as he grinds through an unbeatable string of classics: "How Many More Years", "Smokestack Lightnin'", "Wang Dang Doodle", "Spoonful", "The Red Rooster", "300 Pounds Of Joy" and "Killing Floor", all written either by key blues composer Willie Dixon or The Wolf himself. Dixon plays double bass on most tracks, with Hubert Sumlin's stinging lead guitar also an essential part of Howlin's regular band. The rest of the revolving line-up reads like a who's- who of blues kingpins: Ike Turner, Otis Spann, Jimmy Rogers, Buddy Guy. To close, there's a rare solo acoustic glimpse on 1968's "Ain't Goin' Down That Dirt Road" and 1970's version of "The Red Rooster", with willing electric pupils Eric Clapton, Stevie Winwood, Bill Wyman and Charlie Watts. -Martin Longley.

Review Poet of the Blues / Willie Dixon:One of blues music's greatest composers, Willie Dixon, was also a strong performer. This Columbia Legacy reissue is a profile of the artist in his post-Chess Records years. It is chock-full of classics, many of which have been covered by rock bands as well as blues musicians: "Back Door Man"; "I Can't Quit You Baby"; "Spoonful"; "I Ain't Superstitious"; "I'm Your Hoochie Coochie Man". the list goes on. For all his achievements as a composer and performer, relatively little of Dixon's recorded work is available, particularly from his later years. Alan Lomax, searching for Robert Johnson (recently deceased), came through and recorded a young McKinley Morganfield. The rest is history. Early versions of future classics can be found on these field recordings from 1941-42, and the guitar and voice that would have unimaginable influence on blues and rock & roll. Natural Blues is a well-timed compilation inspired by Moby's ubiquitous Play album which blended blues samples so effectively with synths and beats. Anyone curious to know what the originals of Natural Blues (Vera Hall's "Trouble So Hard") and "Find My Baby" (Boy Blue, Willie Jones and Joe Lees Joe Lee's "Rock") sounded like can hear them among 26 tracks that cover just about every shade of the blues from a cappella field recordings, delta, urban, jump and R&B. Review Me and the Devil: the Blues of Robert Johnson As Told By the Peter Green Splinter Group / Peter Green:A limited edition three-CD set, Me and the Devil assembles the previously issued albums Hot Foot Powder (2000) and The Robert Johnson Songbook (1998), in which Peter Green, Nigel Watson, other Splinter Groupers and occasional guests such as Buddy Guy, Otis Rush and Joe Louis Walker work through the 29 songs recorded 60-odd years ago by Robert Johnson. The third disc contains (in the same order) that original portfolio: the 29 songs, sung by Johnson himself. As if this juxtaposition were not bold enough, the notes claim that hearing the Splinter Group playing songs that Johnson recorded solo gives an impression of how Johnson would have sounded when he played with a band. Time for a reality pill. Green is very good at this sort of thing; he obviously feels an affinity with Johnson, sings and plays his songs without pretension or conceit and makes music that is transparently honest. But the direct comparison that this album allows makes cruelly clear how great a distance separates Johnson from even his most dedicated followers. -Tony Russell.
