Review John Lee Hooker The Complete 50's Chess Recordings / John Lee Hooker:Hooker was already making hits (for Modern) when he started to record for Chicago's legendary Chess Records in 1952. So he's at the peak of his powers on these solo sides from 1952 to '54, and with Eddie "Guitar" Burns, pianist Lafayette Leak, and drummer Fred Below in 1966. The '50s numbers stomp and grind through Hooker's typically down-'n'-dirty songwriting. "Ground Hog Blues" is especially gritty, as he describes how he'll poison his woman's lover. Those cuts also show the influence of pre-war blues personalities Sleepy John Estes (on "Worried Life Blues"), Tampa Red ("Sugar Mama"), Sonny Boy Williamson ("Louise"), Johnny Temple ("Please Don't Go"), and Big Joe Williams ("Bluebird"). The '66 band recordings include his classics "The Waterfront" and "One Bourbon, One Scotch and One Beer". -Ted Drozdowski.

Review East-West / Paul Butterfield:If the Butterfield Blues Band's groundbreaking debut earned the respect of the group's elder influences, this one won over (and guided) the blues boys' psychedelic peers. Highlighted by the 13-minute-plus title track (an Eastern-influenced jam cowritten by guitarist Mike Bloomfield), East-West stretches the boundaries of the blues. It would prod many lesser groups to explore, with generally dreary results, interminable free-flight explorations. But while East-West and a cover of jazzman Cannonball Adderly's "Work Song" ventured in new directions, Paul Butterfield and company remained rooted in solid Chicago blues. Review Me and the Devil: the Blues of Robert Johnson As Told By the Peter Green Splinter Group / Peter Green:A limited edition three-CD set, Me and the Devil assembles the previously issued albums Hot Foot Powder (2000) and The Robert Johnson Songbook (1998), in which Peter Green, Nigel Watson, other Splinter Groupers and occasional guests such as Buddy Guy, Otis Rush and Joe Louis Walker work through the 29 songs recorded 60-odd years ago by Robert Johnson. The third disc contains (in the same order) that original portfolio: the 29 songs, sung by Johnson himself. As if this juxtaposition were not bold enough, the notes claim that hearing the Splinter Group playing songs that Johnson recorded solo gives an impression of how Johnson would have sounded when he played with a band. Time for a reality pill. Green is very good at this sort of thing; he obviously feels an affinity with Johnson, sings and plays his songs without pretension or conceit and makes music that is transparently honest. But the direct comparison that this album allows makes cruelly clear how great a distance separates Johnson from even his most dedicated followers. -Tony Russell.
