Review The Chess Box / Howlin' Wolf:

This is probably the best Wolf compilation there is in terms of comprehensiveness and digestibility. The problem with collecting the works of prolific artists is that there's so much material; fortunately, Chess made some good selections. Chronicling Howlin' Wolf's career from Memphis, through Chicago, and on into his later years. There are snippets of interviews, as well as the classic tracks you'd expect: "All Night Boogie", "Howlin' For My Darling", "Evil", "Forty Four", "Spoonful", and "I'd Better Go Now. " This box set is a bit much to swallow if you're not already a fan of the Wolf, but if you are, this is a great way to get his best work in one place. -Genevieve Williams.

Review John Lee Hooker: The Legendary Modern Recordings 1948-1954 / John Lee Hooker:

Here's proof that one man can rock a house. These 24 songs are stone simple: built upon Hooker singing to his boogying guitar and stomping foot. But their energetic performances and irresistible grooves remain a model of blues perfection. They include the hits that made Hooker a star around Chicago and Detroit: "Boogie Chillen," "Crawling Kingsnake," and "I'm in the Mood. " More than a ticket out of his factory job, these singles became the foundation of a career that has spanned half a century. They were also quite daring for their day. Producer Bernie Besman used techniques like doubling and tripling Hooker's voice on tape, and occasionally (on "I'm in the Mood," for example) had Detroit blues guitarist Eddie Kirkland duplicate Hooker's lines as he sang and played them. For Hooker fans, this is ground zero in all its fiery glory. -Ted Drozdowski.

Review Super Session / Al Kooper:

Nothing on this 1968 album approaches the best work of any of the three principals involved (Al Kooper, Mike Bloomfield and Stephen Stills). What's more, Super Session sounds hopelessly mired in 1968. On the other hand, it's one of the original, groovy jam-rock statements, a spontaneous session filled with enjoyable but dispensable noodling. The first half showcases Bloomfield's piercing, edgy guitar on three blues instrumentals and one modal-jazz extravaganza. The cover of Curtis Mayfield's "Man's Temptation" falls into comic-relief territory, however. Stills and Kooper engage in a countrified Dylan cover and a rambling 11-minute version of Donovan's "Season of the Witch". The album's appeal and its ultimate downfall lie in the impromptu, thrown-together vibe. -Marc Greilsamer, Amazon. com.

Review Poet of the Blues / Willie Dixon:

One of blues music's greatest composers, Willie Dixon, was also a strong performer. This Columbia Legacy reissue is a profile of the artist in his post-Chess Records years. It is chock-full of classics, many of which have been covered by rock bands as well as blues musicians: "Back Door Man"; "I Can't Quit You Baby"; "Spoonful"; "I Ain't Superstitious"; "I'm Your Hoochie Coochie Man". the list goes on. For all his achievements as a composer and performer, relatively little of Dixon's recorded work is available, particularly from his later years. Poet of the Blues is an excellent introduction as well as a chance to hear many of these classic songs in their original incarnations. -Genevieve Williams.

Review His Best / Howlin Wolf:

Chester Burnett's ferocious growl was a staple of Chicago's electric-blues heyday. This 20-song compilation ranges from his 1951 debut "Moanin' at Midnight" with Willie Johnson on guitar to 1964's "Killing Floor" with Buddy Guy on guitar. His scratchy, sawed-off vocal approach and his energetic harmonica grace original classics such as "How Many More Years" and "Smokestack Lightnin'". By 1960, he became, along with Muddy Waters, the foremost interpreter of Willie Dixon's songs, lending his coarse voice to legendary Dixon cuts such as "Wang Dang Doodle", "Back Door Man", "Spoonful", "The Red Rooster", and "I Ain't Superstitious". Wolf's style was based on primal raw power, and he ranks among the genre's most distinctive performers. -Marc Greilsamer.
