Review WWF The Music Vol.5 / Various Artists:The appeal of this CD is at once limited and immense. A 14-song disc featuring the entrance theme songs of World Wrestling Federation superstars will be attractive mostly to WWF fans. But there's certainly several arenas full of those, and that carnivorous clan will certainly want to catch The Rock making his recording debut on "Pie", a skit/novelty song featuring Slick Rick. While a couple of tracks are repetitive instrumental entries with a few vocals, others are more fully developed songs: Motorhead's performanceof "The Game", Triple H's theme song, is raucous fun. The melodic andportentous "If You Dare", Tazz' theme song, is another winner. Ditto the moody "Out of the Fire" that announces Kane's entrance. Odd but appealing is "The One", Billy Gunn's theme song, and "I've Got It All", with its "Sweet Jane" melody line. From hip-hop to metal, this collection has something for every hardcore wrestling fan willing to "smackdown" their hard-earned bucks for the cause. -Katherine Turman.

Review Star Wars: Episode II: Attack Of The Clones / Original Soundtrack:With George Lucas' Star Wars Episode II: Attack Of The Clones impressively showcasing rich drama beyond the customary eye-popping spectacle, long-time franchise collaborator John Williams' score follows suit with a rewarding and compelling mix of tragedy-tinged romance and epic action, enveloped in a pervading air of approaching doom. Dispensing with The Phantom Menace's exuberant, youthful orchestrations, more at home in E. T. , Attack of the Clones pleasingly mirrors Williams' work on franchise zenith The Empire Strikes Back. Fans will delight in the increased appearance of the series' classic themes, underlining the wider saga and tantalisingly foreshadowing future events while, like a Bond score, retaining the series' beloved musical signature. Williams frames the film's tragic romance with a beautiful love theme, "Across the Stars". A sweeping epic with a melancholic edge, it's the strongest track, the "threatened romance" theme further showcased in "Anakin and Padme" and "The Meadow Picnic". Yet, the action cues find Williams on equally glorious form. "Jango's Escape" and "Bounty Hunter's Pursuit" are thoroughly exciting fare while "Zam the Assassin" is a breathless 11-minute epic, with Williams exploring new ground, with Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon-esque percussion and, surprisingly, electric guitar. The forbidding atmosphere reaches a deliriously thrilling crescendo with "Return to Tatooine", "The Tusken Camp" and "Love Pledge and the Arena", a heart-rending collision of romance, action and inescapable dread, interwoven with a plethora of the series themes. [+]
When "The Imperial March" makes a full-blown appearance in "Confrontation with Count Dooku"-as a victorious fanfare, no less-it recalls the best heart-stopping moments of Williams' original Star Wars orchestrations. Coming so far in to such a distinguished career, this is an impressive, memorable work that once again showcases Williams' virtuoso affinity with cinema and, beyond that, a magnificent fifth segment in his eventual Magnum Opus. -Danny Graydon.

Review A Tweenies Christmas / Tweenies:A Tweenies Christmas comes hot on the heels of their sell-out stadium tours, the success of their debut album Friends Forever and the continued success of their TV show. Filled equally with new compositions and cover versions of favourite festive tunes (there's seven of each on the album), this is the ideal collection for getting children (and parents) into the Christmas party mood. Opener "I Believe in Christmas" is a swinging, pop number in the style of S Club 7's "Reach" but with added sleigh bells. If it wasn't for the baby-speak Tweenie vocals, it would be difficult to differentiate between this track and Rachel and Co "doing their thing". Another new tune "Light Up the World" is a warm, feel-good song set on Christmas Eve, while "Fab-A-Rooney Christmas" is the Tweenies jovial Christmas anthem. At times though the toddler-talk (or singing) does complement the song, for instance Milo's nasal rendition of "Merry Xmas Everybody" almost resembles Noddy Holder's blaring vocals on the Slade original. -John Galilee.

Review Star Wars: Special Edition Original Soundtrack [SOUNDTRACK] / RCA:John Williams's music for Star Wars looks back to the Golden Age of Hollywood, particularly to the sweeping grandeur of Erich Wolfgang Korngold's The Sea Hawk and The Adventures of Robin Hood. Korngold, himself an opera composer, drew upon the Wagnerian leitmotif technique of assigning a melody to each important character, and Williams followed this approach, creating a series of memorable themes developed throughout all the Star Wars movies, including The Phantom Menace. The result is a vast, surprisingly unified tapestry of music, a veritable space-operatic Ring cycle for our times. This rich, glittering, boldly orchestrated music is filled with rousing action, wistful reflective passages and moments of playful humour (including some witty retro-alien jazz for the Mos Eisley cantina band). Epic in scope and wearing it's romantic heart on its sleeve, Williams's music is a galaxy far, far away from the ecstatic, modernistic score he produced the same year for Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Although various Star Wars albums have long been available, this double-disc Special Edition at last presents the entire score in original running order. The performance of the London Symphony Orchestra is superb, and the remastered sound a significant improvement on previous issues. In 1977 Star Wars heralded a revival of traditional orchestral scoring which continues today, paving the way for such composers as David Arnold, Bruce Broughton, Patrick Doyle, James Horner and many more. This is the definitive presentation of perhaps the pivotal score in all film history, and an essential part of any collection. -Gary S. [+]
