Review Absolute Heaven - Essential Choral Masterpieces [IMPORT] / Telarc:This sampler, which appeared in 1997, features Robert Shaw, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, and its associated choruses in selections from some of the choral-orchestral blockbusters they recorded for Telarc between 1979 and 1993, in consistently excellent sound. Shaw's unrivalled mastery of this repertory shines through in every selection on the disc, not least in the excerpts that frame the program: the final pages of the "Prologue in Heaven" from Boito's Mefistofele, and the towering conclusion of Mahler's Symphony No. 8, both magnificently done. Just one warning: after listening to this, you're likely to find yourself hurrying back to buy the recordings of the complete works. -Ted Libbey.

Review WWF Music With an Attitude (Box Set) / Various Artists:If you can't get enough of that wrestling stuff, this is the box set for you. Four CDs include music by wrestling's old-school 1980s stars (Hulk Hogan, "Rowdy" Roddy Piper, Captain Lou Albano), heavy-metal hits (on Full Metal: The Album) and volumes 2 and 3 of the WWF: The Music compilations. WWF fans will recognise the entrance themes for most of the turn-of-the-millennium's hottest stars, such as Stone Cold Steve Austin, Val Venis, D-Generation X and, of course, The Rock. Full Metal is actually not all metal: both Gold Rush and Undertaker's swelling orchestral themes sound more like soundtracks to vintage black-and-white vampire movies than metal. (This particular CD also has the dubious distinction of having the worst song in the collection: Shawn Michaels' "Sexy Boy". ) If you really want to rock, change the disc to volume 2 and listen to Ahmed Johnson's "Pearl River Rip". For a glimpse into the twisted terrain of Mankind's mind, check out the same CD's "Ode to Freud". Somehow, this three-minute song is almost as revealing as his autobiography, Have a Nice Day: A Tale of Blood and Sweatsocks. Volume 3 has also got some choice cuts, specifically Edge's sexy techno-rock theme, Dude Love's hysterical self-titled song (what is it about someone crooning their own name in falsetto that is so funny?), and Oddities' cheerfully infectious "Greatest Show". Review Teletubbies: Here Come the Teletubbies [1997] (REGION 1) (NTSC) / PBS Home Video:Here comes Tinky Winky, Dipsy, Laa-Laa and Po! The colourful, chubby, futuristic foursome get up to lots of adventures in this early collection of Teletubbies stories, with plenty of the wonderfully intriguing sounds-from the giggles of the Sun Baby, to the slurping sounds of Noo-Noo, to the "tuning" noise of the loudspeakers-that are the trademark of this BBC show, expertly created to capture the attention of babies and pre-school toddlers. Here Come the Teletubbies is the perfect first video to introduce youngsters to the show, with lots of short stories containing some Teletubby favourites-the tubby toast machine goes berserk and throws toast everywhere, the magic rain cloud appears and makes puddles to splash in, a surreal, computer-generated animal parade marches across the valley, Po makes a trail of tubby custard all over Tubby land and then falls over all the time. There are, of course, two short films of real-life children, from the TV-tummy of the Tubbies, that make this such fun for older toddlers too. -Alison Jardine.
