Review Star Wars Episode 2: Attack of the Clones / Sony Classical:With George Lucas' Star Wars Episode II: Attack Of The Clones impressively showcasing rich drama beyond the customary eye-popping spectacle, long-time franchise collaborator John Williams' score follows suit with a rewarding and compelling mix of tragedy-tinged romance and epic action, enveloped in a pervading air of approaching doom. Dispensing with The Phantom Menace's exuberant, youthful orchestrations, more at home in E. T. , Attack of the Clones pleasingly mirrors Williams' work on franchise zenith The Empire Strikes Back. Fans will delight in the increased appearance of the series' classic themes, underlining the wider saga and tantalisingly foreshadowing future events while, like a Bond score, retaining the series' beloved musical signature. Williams frames the film's tragic romance with a beautiful love theme, "Across the Stars". A sweeping epic with a melancholic edge, it's the strongest track, the "threatened romance" theme further showcased in "Anakin and Padme" and "The Meadow Picnic". Yet, the action cues find Williams on equally glorious form. "Jango's Escape" and "Bounty Hunter's Pursuit" are thoroughly exciting fare while "Zam the Assassin" is a breathless 11-minute epic, with Williams exploring new ground, with Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon-esque percussion and, surprisingly, electric guitar. The forbidding atmosphere reaches a deliriously thrilling crescendo with "Return to Tatooine", "The Tusken Camp" and "Love Pledge and the Arena", a heart-rending collision of romance, action and inescapable dread, interwoven with a plethora of the series themes. [+]When "The Imperial March" makes a full-blown appearance in "Confrontation with Count Dooku"-as a victorious fanfare, no less-it recalls the best heart-stopping moments of Williams' original Star Wars orchestrations. Coming so far in to such a distinguished career, this is an impressive, memorable work that once again showcases Williams' virtuoso affinity with cinema and, beyond that, a magnificent fifth segment in his eventual Magnum Opus. -Danny Graydon.

Review Batman Returns: Original Soundtrack [SOUNDTRACK] / WEA:Between Batmans, Danny Elfman scored the marvellous Edward Scissorhands, and its sugar-plum effect on all his subsequent scores has been clear. "Birth Of A Penguin" opens this disc with a wonderfully cheesy organ blare, and then becomes a tinkling choral Christmas for the Cobblepots. The "ooh" of the choir continues to pop up at unexpected junctures, even deconstructing the formally martial Batman theme for the titles. The Penguin's theme is hardly recognisable in this prologue, but makes a grand entrance at "The Cemetery". The three-pointed portrait of schizophrenia is then completed by what's in essence a rather predictable Catwoman theme that nevertheless dazzles in the way its meowing strings bend and sexily glide. As before, poor Bruce Wayne/Bats hardly gets a look-in for screen time. But whereas the first score regurgitated one theme in a million brilliant variations, this sequel pares right back in favour of the new. "Batman vs. The Circus" is more about the composer's love for carnival standards than action scoring. The "End Credits" suite encapsulates everything in what could easily have come first as an overture. [+]And for once the song included ("Face To Face" by Elfman and Siouxsie & the Banshees) is an integral part of movie and score. -Paul Tonks.

Review Tarzan / Original Soundtrack:If you've ever cringed in anticipation of the schmaltzy warbling in a Disney picture, then this could be the album to confound your expectations. The idea of Phil Collins is a great start anyway, with his huskily strained vocals bringing a very different sound. On top of that, the marriage of his songs and voice into Mark Mancina's rollicking score is done in a very successful way. Their goal was to integrate Collins as a singing narrator, the trick being to avoid a clash between score ending and song beginning. Pleasingly the album retains much of that seamlessness. You might feel you could do without reprising duets with luscious boy band 'N Sync, but thanks to the jungle rhythms of Speed king Mancina, they do actually feel like a part of the whole. "Two Worlds" is a definite highlight of the collaboration for musicality, but "Trashin' the Camp" has the inventive laughs. And yes, it does finish on the famous Tarzan yodel! -Paul Tonks If anyone belongs in the "Whatever Happened To?" category of a game show, it's Phil Collins. Back in the 1980s, Collins was everywhere, having retinkered Genesis into a smooth, hit-making machine and embarking on a solo career that redefined adult contemporary music. He's still been busy, but nowhere near the spotlight. [+]His latest project has been writing five songs for Disney's animated Tarzan. "You' ll Be in My Heart"-presented here in two versions, one with actress Glenn Close-is exactly the sort of ersatz orchestrated power ballad you expect from this sentimental guy. A duet with 'N Sync in "Trashin' the Camp" (also issued in two versions) is Phil's concession to the kids. Producer Mark Mancina's instrumental score mixes the expectant ambient sounds of the jungle with the slowly unfolding sounds of daybreak and jungle rhythms (provided by Collins on drums) that denote inevitable conflict. -Rob O'Connor.
