Review Pokémon the First Movie Ost / Original Soundtrack:"Gotta catch 'em all", shouts teen-popper Billy Crawford on this kid-phenom soundtrack. Engineered to capture not only pre-teen fans of the Japanese anime craze, but Saturday morning kid's TV fans who might fall for singles such as girl group M2M's peppy "Don't Say You Love Me", it's loaded with familiar zillion-selling names such as Britney Spears, 'N Sync, Christina Aguilera and 98 Degrees. A mixture of light dance-pop, innocuous romantic ballads, and "Eye of the Tiger" drama keeps things moving. U-certificated through and through, the disc's non-stop chirpiness might eventually wear on parents' ears even as they acknowledge the catchy hooks. Review Voices from Heaven / Universal Classics:This is the second instalment in a recording project originally inspired by Pope John Paul II's visit to Paris in 1997 to celebrate the Worldwide Days of Youth. A surprisingly effective anthology of mostly sacred liturgical music, the selections here occasionally give the impression of "bleeding chunks" (as in the majestic opener from one of Monteverdi's sublimest creations, the 1610 Vespers) but have been chosen with imagination. Chung coordinates his forces in larger choral pieces with power and vertical balance, making a standout of the Beethovenian mystery and drive apparent in the "Sanctus" from Schubert's Mass in E-flat. Contributions by Cecilia Bartoli find the mezzo in top form-listen to her finely spun line interweave with the oboe d'amore in a selection from Bach's B Minor Mass-and as evocative as bright stained glass in Fauré's "Pie Jesu". Bryn Terfel brings charismatic presence to his one selection here (also from the Fauré Requiem). Also included are the interminable "Song for Athene" by John Taverner and a sentimental but earnest performance by Andrea Bocelli in Eric Levi's hymn for the world, "I Believe". -Thomas May.

Review Dinosaur: Original Soundtrack / James Newton-Howard:The opening inseparable double-act of "Inner Sanctum/The Nesting Grounds" followed by "The Egg Travels" represents the first of two uncharacteristically brave, musical choices made by Disney. This is a completely dialogue-free ten minutes starting the movie which, like the trailer that preceded it, tells its story solely through music. The second act of bravery is the complete absence of a single song. Newton Howard, therefore, had both a great weight and freedom on his shoulders. His response is something with the ethnic anywhere percussive feel of The Lion King coupled with a romanticism John Williams would be happy with. After this overture is the love theme for "Aladar and Neera", which is one of the most beautiful melodies the composer has ever produced. The rest of the album follows the overture stylistically, punctuated frequently by angry bursts of electronically augmented percussion. "Raptors/Stand Together" is the best example of this, and also illustrates that the cues are a jumble of the film's chronology since this is the climactic battle finale. The absence of songs means this won't appeal to the usual kiddie collectors, but everyone else should admire Disney's bravery. -Paul Tonks.

Review The Empire Strikes Back: Special Edition Original Soundtrack [SOUNDTRACK] / RCA:As the bridging film of the original Star Wars trilogy, The Empire Strikes Back (1980) topped its predecessor in terms of story, character development, and special effects. Directed by Irvin Kershner, the sequel documents the relentless pursuit of the rebels by Darth Vader, a burgeoning romance between Han Solo and Princess Leia, and the training of Luke by the mystical Yoda. Taking advantage of his elaborate leitmotif design, composer John Williams introduces a wise, spiritual theme for Yoda and a delicate love theme that assumes a more dramatic profile after Han is betrayed and frozen into sculpture. The score is also an imaginative inventory of self-contained settings, whether it be the chilly Hoth soundscapes, the otherworldly choruses of Cloud City, or the intricate gymnastics written for "The Asteroid Field". Discarding the heroic optimism of his previous score, Williams enforces the film's overriding dark tone through the ominous, brassy "Imperial March". Appearing in virtually every cue, the march accompanies Vader's obsessive quest to kidnap and convert Luke to the dark side. Review Kaleidoscope / Hyperion:Marc-André Hamelin is a noted pianistic dazzler, but what he does in Kaleidoscope is sheer delight. Twenty piano miniatures, some never previously recorded and all relatively unknown, may sound as indigestibly rich as a concert of encores, but Hamelin has chosen and arranged them with such care that they slip down like fine champagne. There are real curiosities here, notably Offenbach's tune, which became the hymn of the American marines, and Felix Blumenfeld's study for solo left hand, which has an extraordinarily spacious grace. And there are some marvellous jokes, including one of Hamelin's own homages to Scarlatti, which comes equipped with all the Scarlatti mannerisms but stands them wickedly askew. There is also great beauty here-viz Moszkowski's Chopinesque Etude in A Flat Major and Josef Hofmann's Kaleidoscop Op. 40 No. 4, whose fistfuls of notes are brandished with pearly brilliance. Everything on this irresistible CD has wit and charm: you listen with a smile on your face. -Michael Church.
