Review The Empire Strikes Back: Special Edition Original Soundtrack (deluxe) [SOUNDTRACK] / RCA:

As the bridging film of the original Star Wars trilogy, The Empire Strikes Back (1980) topped its predecessor in terms of story, character development, and special effects. Directed by Irvin Kershner, the sequel documents the relentless pursuit of the rebels by Darth Vader, a burgeoning romance between Han Solo and Princess Leia, and the training of Luke by the mystical Yoda. Taking advantage of his elaborate leitmotif design, composer John Williams introduces a wise, spiritual theme for Yoda and a delicate love theme that assumes a more dramatic profile after Han is betrayed and frozen into sculpture. The score is also an imaginative inventory of self-contained settings, whether it be the chilly Hoth soundscapes, the otherworldly choruses of Cloud City, or the intricate gymnastics written for "The Asteroid Field". Discarding the heroic optimism of his previous score, Williams enforces the film's overriding dark tone through the ominous, brassy "Imperial March". Appearing in virtually every cue, the march accompanies Vader's obsessive quest to kidnap and convert Luke to the dark side. A definitive accounting of the finest science-fiction score ever written, this remastered two-disc set (released concurrently with the special edition of The Empire Strikes Back in 1997) presents the complete score in its full glory. -Kevin Mulhall.

Review A Bug's Life [1999] (REGION 1) (NTSC) / Walt Disney Video:

There was a rare magic on the big screen in 1995, when the people at Pixar came up with the first fully computer-animated film, Toy Story, and their second feature film, A Bug's Life, may miss the bull's-eye but Pixar's target is so lofty that it's hard to find the film anything less than irresistible. Brighter and more colourful than the other animated insect movie of 1998 (Antz), A Bug's Life is the sweetly told story of Flik (voiced by David Foley), an ant searching for better ways to be a bug. His colony unfortunately revolves around feeding and fearing the local grasshoppers (lead by Hopper, voiced with gleeful menace by Kevin Spacey). When Flik accidentally destroys the seasonal food supply for the grasshoppers he decides to look for help ("We need bigger bugs!"). The ants, led by Princess Atta (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), are eager to dispose of the troublesome Flik. Yet he finds help-a hearty bunch of bug warriors-and brings them back to the colony. Unfortunately they are just travelling performers, afraid of conflict. As with Toy Story, the ensemble of creatures and voices is remarkable and often inspired. Highlights include wiseacre comedian Denis Leary as an un-ladylike ladybird, Joe Ranft as the German-accented caterpillar, David Hyde Pierce as a stick insect and Michael McShane as a pair of unintelligible woodlice. The scene-stealer is Atta's squeaky-voiced sister, baby Dot (Hayden Panettiere), who has a big soft spot for Flik. [+]
More gentle and kid-friendly than Antz, A Bug Life's still has some good suspense and a wonderful demise in store for the villain. However, the film-a worldwide hit-will be remembered for its most creative touch: "outtakes" over the end credits à la many live-action comedy films. These dozen or so scenes (both "editions" of outtakes are contained here) are brilliant and deserve a special place in film history right along with 1998's other most talked-about sequence: the opening Normandy invasion in Saving Private Ryan. -Doug Thomas.

Review Cathedral Voices / Classics:

Anyone who has ever sung in a church choir or choral society will enjoy this two-disc compilation of religious choral music. Some 29 tracks of complete short works or excerpts from larger pieces, written over the past 500 years, have been selected from recordings by cathedral, chapel and professional choirs. They range from Tallis's Spem in Alium to Arvo Pärt's De Profundis and Britten's A. M. D. G. , and include the Schütz Choir of London singing a chorus from Brahms' German Requiem, Harry Christophers and the Sixteen performing a Poulenc motet, the Taverner Consort, which provides six tracks, and the Bamburg Symphony Orchestra and Chorus (with soprano Christiane Oelze as soloist) singing Bruckner's setting of Psalm 150. Much of this music is more familiar today in the concert hall than in a liturgical setting, and whether some of the composers were religious or not, or even believed in God, hardly matters. The sound of combined human voices and the words they had to set inspired them all to produce music that is simultaneously calming and uplifting, allowing them to create music that continues to reach deep into the human psyche. -Richard Fawkes.

Review Pokemon 2: The Power Of One / Original Soundtrack:

While the inclusion of novelty songster Weird Al Yankovic (here with "Polkamon") and new-waver all-stars the B-52s (here with the playful "The Chosen One") sharpens the proceedings with their individual visions, most of the performers here have been coached by producer David Foster or other music industry veterans. Most successful is former disco diva Donna Summer, who emerges with the dramatic tune "The Power of One", which sneakily includes the Pokémon theme featured throughout the film. Twelve-year-old Alysha may be a burgeoning teen star with her surprisingly mature interpretation of "Dreams". The emphasis is on the current teen-pop trend: Dream Street, Christian boy band Plus One and O-Town (the band documented on a US TV series called Making the Band) all serve up the prescribed recipe for success: swooning harmonies, greeting-card lyrics, and near-operatic melodies designed for radio. You expected a movie starring Pokémon to miss a trend? C'mon. -Rob O'Connor.

Review WWF - The Music Volume 3 / Various Artists:

It's a stroke of marketing genius: just before any of the World Wrestling Federation's stars enters an arena, his theme music blares over the speakers. It's an amazing dramatic device for the story-line-fuelled "sports entertainment experience", and it drives the fans wild. It doesn't make for good songs, but that's not really the point-after all, the idea here is to get a distinctive 10 to 15 seconds that sounds good at stadium sound levels; after about 30 seconds it's easy to see that these "songs" are really nothing more than pumped-up jingles. As a series of commercials for the WWF's stars, 14 of which are represented here, or as a memento for fans, this disc is made to order. If you're looking for a CD that you'll actually put on the stereo for fun, you're better off with either WWF Agression or ECW: Extreme Music. -Randy Silver.

Review Kaleidoscope / Hyperion:

Marc-André Hamelin is a noted pianistic dazzler, but what he does in Kaleidoscope is sheer delight. Twenty piano miniatures, some never previously recorded and all relatively unknown, may sound as indigestibly rich as a concert of encores, but Hamelin has chosen and arranged them with such care that they slip down like fine champagne. There are real curiosities here, notably Offenbach's tune, which became the hymn of the American marines, and Felix Blumenfeld's study for solo left hand, which has an extraordinarily spacious grace. And there are some marvellous jokes, including one of Hamelin's own homages to Scarlatti, which comes equipped with all the Scarlatti mannerisms but stands them wickedly askew. There is also great beauty here-viz Moszkowski's Chopinesque Etude in A Flat Major and Josef Hofmann's Kaleidoscop Op. 40 No. 4, whose fistfuls of notes are brandished with pearly brilliance. Everything on this irresistible CD has wit and charm: you listen with a smile on your face. -Michael Church.
