Review Neighborhoods / Olu Dara:It might seem unlikely but in Neighborhoods Dara again approaches the brilliance of his 1999 album In The World. Back in the late 1970s and early 1980s, Dara was blowing cornet for jazzman David Murray and on all but two tracks of this album he lays down his guitar in favour of cornet and its mysterious wooden horn counterpart. The interlocking Afro-blues guitar parts are ably handled by Kwatei Jones-Quartey and Ivan Ramirez, while the keyboards sometimes stack up three-strong (Rhodes, Wurlitzer and Hammond!), with the omnipresent Dr John guesting on four cuts. Congolese percussionist Massamba gets paid a compliment on the eponymous opener, establishing the gumbo ratios with its infectiously stepping gait, female chorus rabble and cutting horns. Dara's throaty Caribbean vocal twang calls to mind that affected by Taj Mahal on his calypso outings, Olu's words apparently crafted as a virtual stream-of-consciousness, telling stories that hark back to when he was a boy. So, you can hear about the "Herbman" coming to town, or savour "Bell & Ponce (At The Movie Show)", the latter vividly calling up sharp pictures of the formative flick-going experience. The solo tracks with Dara on guitar feature some perfectly judged vocal overdubs, creating a web of languid phrases set against a cranky porch-string shimmer. Then Cassandra Wilson steps in on "Used To Be", her voice sympathetically deep-toned beside Dara's. Martin Longley.

Review Thickfreakness / Black Keys:With Thickfreakness, Ohio's Black Keys offer crunchy, riff-heavy blues-rock that is remarkably rich and textured, particularly when one considers that they are merely a duo. Continuing in the vein of their 2002 debut, The Big Come Up, this second album leavens their garage blues with enough innovation to keep things interesting, taking full advantage of Dan Auerbach's full-throated growl. Particularly appealing are "Hard Row", which lurks somewhere between Cream and punk rock, the strong stomp of "Everywhere I Go" and the irresistible guitar riff that graces "If You See Me". The Black Keys might be covering familiar territory, but they do it so well-and with so much invention-that one is inclined to yield it to them and see what they do with it. -Genevieve Williams.

Review Let The Good Times Roll: The Music Of Louis Jordan / B.B. King:Albums consisting entirely of one artist paying tribute to another are commonplace, especially in the blues world where a particular artist's musical heritage is easy to trace. It's rare, though, for an artist of B. B. King's calibre to do such a tribute and we're all lucky that the artist he chose to honour is Louis Jordan- the King of the Blues saluting the King of Swing. King's clean, expressive guitar style and rough-hewn voice are so distinctive that there's no mistaking them for anyone else's and hearing them applied to Jordan's classic songs- including "Ain't Nobody Here but Us Chickens", "Somebody Done Changed the Lock on My Door", "Saturday Night Fish Fry" and "Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out"- demonstrates both King's considerable skill and the great versatility of Jordan's song writing. That makes this record more than a mere curiosity, as does the stellar piano work from another living legend, Dr. John. - Genevieve Williams.

Review Led Zeppelin Box Set Vol.1 / Led Zeppelin:Here are the original monsters of rock in all their epic, bombastic glory. The Who may have had more decibels (a dubious distinction), but no band took hard rock higher into the stratosphere than the Zep did with their cosmic mixture of deep blues, gothic melodrama and the supernatural chops of Page, Plant, Bonham and Jones. For listeners new to the Zep canon, there's no better primer of the band's range and power than this four CD box set, compiled and remixed in 1990 by Page himself. All the obvious song choices are here but even if you've already heard "Black Dog" once too often on the car radio, this set wisely spotlights several overlooked gems, including their ultimate blues lament "I'm Gonna Crawl". It's a blueprint that later generations of head-bangers tragically failed to follow. -Steve Appleford.
