Review Led Zeppelin IV [VINYL REPLICA] / Led Zeppelin:Also known as the "rune" album because of the medieval symbols adorning its cover, Led Zeppelin's fourth album, released in 1971, turned them from mere superstars into giant behemoths of the rock world. On tracks like "Black Dog", "Misty Mountain Hop", and "Rock and Roll", the combination of Robert Plant's banshee wails and Jimmy Page's frenetic guitar playing forever altered the stylistic bent of hard rock music. And the foreboding "When the Levee Breaks" demonstrated that Zeppelin could indeed play the blues fairly straight if they so desired. Still, everything here ultimately took a back seat to the album's (and, ultimately, the band's) magnum opus-the expertly constructed and deftly executed classic, "Stairway to Heaven". -Billy Altman.

Review Round About Midnight / Miles Davis:Where the original 1957 'Round About Midnight had six tracks, this remastered edition is bolstered by a further four pieces, recorded during the same mid-1950s sessions. The new edition still begins with the title track and it's an inspirational version, prompted by the trumpeter's return to public form with the very same number at the 1955 Newport Jazz Festival. It's like the microphone's seated right up inside the muted bell, picking up every metallic fracture and putter, his spine-tingling solo centrally placed, band cohorts restrained with delicate brushes, ivory dapples and faintly stroked strings. The album marked Miles's Columbia debut, supported by the legendary line-up of John Coltrane (tenor saxophone), Red Garland (piano), Paul Chambers (bass) and Philly Joe Jones (drums). Coltrane always made a striking stylistic contrast with Miles, once again best illustrated by the title cut, when his solo entrance immediately prompts a kind of relief, upping the action into a mini-big band swing feel. -Martin Longley.

Review The Unstoppable Ted Hawkins / Ted Hawkins:First contact with Hawkins' music was alternately joyful and bewildering. The Unstoppable Ted Hawkins brings it all back. Here was a singer with a voice to die for, a Sam Cooke risen from the grave, by turns pleading and positive, wistful and wily. But the songbook in his head was unique, a great fat scrapbook of soul and R&B and country, everything from "Dock of the Bay" and "Let the Good Times Roll" to "Your Cheating Heart" and, good grief, "Country Roads"-mingled with pieces of his own, odd yet gripping and hard to forget, such as "Watch Your Step" and "The Lost Ones". All these and a dozen or so more are gathered in the warm embrace of a show Hawkins gave, alone with his guitar, one winter night in 1988, at London's Mean Fiddler club. He died a few years later, but this informal recording, issued here for the first time, conjures up more than a ghost of his good-humoured and immensely likeable presence. -Tony Russell.

Review Living With the Past [Live] / Jethro Tull:Living With the Past is a beautifully packaged and thoughtfully programmed compilation of recent live recordings of songs across the span of Jethro Tull's sizeable catalogue. Their origins as a blues band with folk leanings made them a welcome alternative to the power trio back in the late 1960s. That period is covered on "Some day the sun won't shine for you", recorded by the original band when they reunited in 2002. Their commercial high point was Aqualung, as brilliant and lasting a statement as any in classic rock. On this album recordings of utterly respectful versions, the line-up includes "Locomotive Breath" and the title track. Elsewhere Ian Anderson is joined by a string quartet for new takes on some early and obscure single sides. The bands penchant for long-form rock-operatic fare, that put them in a progressive cul-de-sac alongside Yes and Genesis, lost them critical support but not their legion of fans. The fans know that this band still has its chops, in particular, longstanding guitarist Martin Barre is among the most underrated of classic rock axemen and this fine live album is as much his as it is Anderson's. -Rob Stewart.

Review Rubber Factory [VINYL] / Black Keys:Opening with the slide guitar-driven "When the Lights Go Out", Rubber Factory starts as it means to go on - this is blues that sticks to its guns and does a damn fine job of it. And there's more to recommend it than simply the lovely lo-fi production (Jack White eat yer heart out) - there's conviction in the performance and strong songs to back it up. In a genre that, these days, has a tendency to slip into dreary cliché, The Black Keys should be applauded for keeping things interesting. So this is a blues album - to dress it up as anything else would be to miss its point. But that shouldn't put off the casual listener. As well as the more trad-sounding opener, and tracks such as "Stack Shot Billy" (whose guitar wouldn't sound out of place on a John Lee Hooker record), you get the beautiful, mournful "The Lengths" and rockers such as "All Hands Against His Own" and the album's rousing closer, "Till I Get My Way". All in all, proof that the blues can still be relevant today, even if a sizeable proportion of its originators are now no longer with us. -Marc Bloomfield.

Review In the Morning / Joe Louis Walker:No bluesman so successfully segues from the secular to the sacred as singer and guitarist Joe Louis Walker, one of the genre's most complete artists. In the Morning continues the Walker tradition of providing a comprehensive catalogue of blues styles and attitudes, from historic roots to contemporary innovations. Walker does some first-class soul-shouting while unleashing a succession of electrifying guitar lines on the propulsive, percussion-driven opener "You're Just About To Lose Your Clown". He closes the album with "Strangers In Our House", a dark acoustic showcase about love gone cold that is the album's most extended selection, as well as its most compelling demonstration of the rich emotional resonance of his voice. The eight songs in between include everything from the bouncy "Joe's Jump" to the instant R&B classic "Leave That Girl Alone" to some soul-stirring gospel on "Where Jesus Leads". The guitar work, both electric and acoustic, is uniformly excellent in all contexts, including the esoteric Stones instrumental "2120 South Michigan Avenue" (the address of the legendary Chess Records studio). Walker's gospel background colours everything he sings and his expansive guitar supplies emphasis without overwhelming the songs. -Michael Point.
