Review Time Will Tell / The Robert Cray Band:In Time Will Tell Georgia blues veteran Robert Cray has taken the freedom offered by a change in record labels to team with keyboardist, songwriter and producer Jim Pugh in a set of performances that are by turns looser, funkier, and more far-ranging in their subject matter than more typical blues. John Lennon once said of the music's primacy that "the blues is a chair". Yet for many artists the genre often seems more like a straitjacket, one that even a modern legend like Robert Cray has struggled to escape during the course of a multi-Grammy career. Cray wastes no time in boldly staking out his new turf on the pointed, country-gospel-rooted, anti-war "Survivor". From there he takes another jarring turn into the psych-pop of "Up in the Sky," trading his trademark Strat for the rare, distinctive tones of an electric sitar. Even Cray's more familiar blues tack is variously tinged with slippery swamp tones ("Back Door Slam"), slinky Memphis grooves ("Your Pal", featuring the Family Stone horns, and "What You Need") and the propulsive Caribbean inflections of "Distant Shore". Review Beggars Oil Ep / Kelly Joe Phelps:Kelly Joe Phelps, accompanied by veteran bassist Larry Taylor and drummer Billy Conway (ex-Morphine), recorded his 2001 release Sky Like a Broken Clock in just three days. You have to figure that such a stream-of-consciousness recording session generated some alternate takes and songs that just maybe didn't fit on the finished album-and you'd be right. Hence Beggar's Oil, a limited-edition EP full of goodies for fans of one of the greatest slide guitarists around. The title track is taken from Sky, perhaps to set the mood, but the other five songs consist of two alternate versions of songs from the album, plus three songs that didn't make it to the album. The band arrangement of "Tommy" is a little odd, and it's easy to understand why it's not on Sky-it's not bad; it's just not as perfect as the one Phelps performs solo. With "Don Quixote's Windmill", as with "Tommy", Phelps gently explores a world of madness in a way that makes sense of it, while "Lass of Loch Royale" is simply beautiful. Although never obtrusive or forceful, Phelps's music penetrates both head and heart, leaving an impression long after the last notes have faded. -Genevieve Williams.

Review Loud Guitars Big Suspicions / Shannon Curfman:What is it about Fargo, North Dakota? The town that gave us Jonny Lang, young guitar-slinger of the 1990s, now presents Shannon Curfman. young guitar-slinger of the 1990s. Rereleased on Arista Records, Curfman's debut, Loud Guitars, Big Suspicions was recorded when the guitarist was only 13. But you'd never guess it by listening to her play; although her style doesn't have the distinctive stamp that will come with experience, she's more than competent. And her singing voice sounds like it belongs to someone twice her age. Though the comparisons to Bonnie Raitt may be a bit premature, Curfman's got just as much potential as any of the other young blues-rockers littering the landscape these days, if not more. It'll be most worthwhile to hear how she develops; Loud Guitars, Big Suspicions may well be the debut of the next queen of blues guitar. -Genevieve Williams.

Review Harmonica Blues / Various Artists:From the 1950s onward pianist Hank Jones was regarded by his fellow musicians as the best accompanist in the world and as a consequence he appeared on hundreds of albums. Even with so many it appears that Jones was selective, for one never finds him on a bad album. The bonus was that he is also one of the most tasteful creators of solos. He is the oldest of the post powerful team of brothers in jazz, the others being trumpeter Thad and the drummer on this album, Elvin. This 1993 album, devoted to the music written by Thad, is exquisitely beautiful and yet it has muscle, particularly since Elvin, who doesn't normally play in Hank's trio, is a powerful player despite the restraint he shows here. The bassist George Mraz, one of the best playing today, is given a full role and since the three individuals are so expressive, this doesn't feel like a simple trio album. Thad Jones was a fine composer and so the menu is without weakness in that respect. Thad's own version of "A Child Is Born" was ever moving, but if it is possible this interpretation is even better. - Steve Voce.
