Review BBC Sessions / Led Zeppelin:Frequently bootlegged and now digitally remastered by Jimmy Page, these tapes capture a 25-month (1969 to 1971) arc in which Zep's sound grew to encompass the speed rush and jazz/blues festival stuff of their 1969 debut, the fully developed folkie musings of "Going to California" (in which Plant vowed to make a hejira right up to Joni Mitchell's front door), and the band's modestly popular multilayered epic "Stairway to Heaven. " The Sessions also give a glimpse of nearly off-the-cuff invention in an intense take on Robert Johnson's "Traveling Riverside Blues". Most other white blues musicians would've rushed to get this on vinyl; Page and Plant instead used it for parts, most notably taking its profound acoustic freneticism for Led Zeppelin III. -Rickey Wright.

Review Exile on Main Street / Rolling Stones:Before Keith Richards' bad habits took over for a time in the mid-'70s, his work ethic was quite high. Stories abound of the long, if somewhat off-schedule, hours he spent working on this classic album in the basement of his home in France. Hanging together as much because of great songwriting ("Rocks Off," "Soul Survivor") as its fabled grungy atmosphere, Exile caps the Stones' great 1968-'72 run with a force that belies their supposed spiritual tiredness. What some of these songs are about is anybody's guess-Keith claims "Ventilator Blues" was inspired by a grate, while the song plays like an ode to a pistol-but that's just part of this album's hazy game. -Rickey Wright.

Review Stand Up: Remastered / Jethro Tull:Even as they began to fancy themselves as codpiece-wearing Elizabethan minstrels in the gallery, Jethro Tull was a blues-based hard-rock group, and an explosive one, at that. On Stand Up, they enjoy the best of both worlds, with lighter fare such as "Jeffrey Goes to Leicester Square" and a jazzy instrumental take on J. S. Bach's "Bouree" mixing nicely with the blistering rock of "A New Day Yesterday", "Nothing Is Easy", and "For a Thousand Mothers". On Stand Up, the group's second album, you can hear the band, and the grand scheme behind it, begin to solidify. -Daniel Durchholz.

Review Blue Valentine / Tom Waits:More hard-boiled tales from Tom Waits, who manages to sing lines like "Everyone I know is either dead or in prison" in a raw, whiskey-soaked rasp that sounds both comical and deadly serious. Waits doesn't break any new creative ground here but continues to refine his down-and-out persona. It's booze and broads, sex and violence, laughs and heartbreak. This 1978 album opens with an astonishingly desperate version of "Somewhere" (from "West Side Story"), performed like Louie Armstrong with a migraine. From there it's the usual Waits mix of crackpot wordplay and the cocktail lounge jazz likes of "Romeo Is Bleeding". -Steve Appleford.

Review The White Stripes / The White Stripes:Their self-titled debut, The White Stripes, is probably the rawest album to date from Meg and Jack. With their own stomping version of blues classic "Stop Breakin' Down" (Robert Johnson), the passionate railings of "The Big 3 Killed My Baby" and the sudden blues breakdown of "When I Hear My Name", this is the Stripes in their most shambolic, inspired state. Much of the album may be Jack launching full tilt into Robert Plant "whooping" mode (see "Jimmy the Exploder" in particular), but there are also a couple of slow, dark ballads such as Dylan's "One More Cup of Coffee" and the eerie tale of "St James Infirmary". Culminating in one of their most popular songs, the childlike "Little People" ("There's a little girl with the red shoes on/hello!") The White Stripes is yet further evidence that if you want to take rock music forward you really don't need to spend your time fiddling with samples or drum machines. -Caroline Butler.
