Review Mirror Man: the Mirror Man Sessions/Remastered / Captain Beefheart:

There are times when a set of recordings begs not only to be re-mastered and reissued, but restored according to the artist's original intent. Mirror Man Sessions is an unqualified success of this sort. It's a re-sequenced approximation of the planned, half-live-in-the-studio/half-studio double album It Comes to You in a Plain Brown Wrapper, which Beefheart and band started on several months after the release of their debut, Safe as Milk. Most importantly, the disc includes many of the songs off the botched Strictly Personal album (the tapes of which were maliciously slathered with heavy echo and phasing effects by producer Bob Krasnow, without Beefheart's approval) in blissful clarity. The sound throughout is vibrant, with all the sparks of the dual-guitar interplay and massive slide sound that would typify the Magic Band in years to come. The album has far fewer tempo changes than Milk or the records that follow it; the band for the most part digs deep blues-based grooves and stays within their confines. But there are lengthy, monochromatic stomp-trance workouts, such as "Tarotplane" and "Gimme Dat Harp Boy", which stretch out and explore John French's jagged drumming, the guitarists' uniquely deft, pan-tonal playing, and Beefheart's harp playing, gruff vocal style, and impressionistic lyrics. Note: Seven more tracks from this session are included on the reissue of Safe as Milk. -Mike McGonigal.

Review Live from Carnegie Hall/Live from Austin Texas: +DVD / Stevie Ray Vaughan:

The series of Stevie Ray Vaughan concert albums that began with Live Alive (1986) and continued after the guitarist's 1990 death is far from the catalogue-bloating cash-in you'd expect from the record company of a platinum seller cut down at a career peak. Instead, each disc gives a distinctly different view of the Texas blues-rocker's stage strengths. Where Live Alive captured Vaughan and his band Double Trouble in full arena roar and In the Beginning recorded a looser early club gig, Live at Carnegie Hall finds the outfit broadening its range with guest shots from Dr. John and the Roomful of Blues horn section. Rather than overpowering Vaughan's signature tautness, the bigger band makes for an entertaining switch-in effect allowing a fresh look at his R&B roots. -Rickey Wright The series of Stevie Ray Vaughan concert albums that began with Live Alive (1986) and continued after the guitarist's 1990 death is far from the catalog-bloating cash-in you'd expect from the record company of a platinum seller cut down at a career peak. Review Hound Dog - The Essential Collection / Big Mama Thornton:

The classic "Hound Dog" is usually associated with Elvis Presley, but blues fans know: Presley's recording wasn't the first. That honor belongs to singer Big Mama Thornton, whose own recording of "Hound Dog" was eclipsed by Presley's. Her version is on this collection in all its glory, opening a CD of 18 killer tracks. Thornton's voice, by turns growling and richly melodic, was indeed unusual, and the spare accompaniment on Hound Dog makes it stand out all the more on songs such as "They Call Me Big Mama," "How Come," "The Big Change," "Hard Times," and "The Fish. " Thornton had talent and attitude to spare, and both come through loud and clear on this essential collection. -Genevieve Williams.

Review Harmonica Blues / Various Artists:

From the 1950s onward pianist Hank Jones was regarded by his fellow musicians as the best accompanist in the world and as a consequence he appeared on hundreds of albums. Even with so many it appears that Jones was selective, for one never finds him on a bad album. The bonus was that he is also one of the most tasteful creators of solos. He is the oldest of the post powerful team of brothers in jazz, the others being trumpeter Thad and the drummer on this album, Elvin. This 1993 album, devoted to the music written by Thad, is exquisitely beautiful and yet it has muscle, particularly since Elvin, who doesn't normally play in Hank's trio, is a powerful player despite the restraint he shows here. The bassist George Mraz, one of the best playing today, is given a full role and since the three individuals are so expressive, this doesn't feel like a simple trio album. Thad Jones was a fine composer and so the menu is without weakness in that respect. Thad's own version of "A Child Is Born" was ever moving, but if it is possible this interpretation is even better. - Steve Voce.

Review Sunset Over London / Jools Holland:

Forget the Cherry Poppin' Daddies, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy and all those other neo-swing outfits from across the pond, Jools Holland really knows how to swing. He also knows how to jive, not to mention shimmy, and could probably do a mean cakewalk if asked nicely. The lovable cockney may have made his name with Squeeze and become a household name as presenter of The Tube and Later With Jools Holland, but he's never made any secret of his lifelong passion for the blues. And if he's still best-known as a chirpy TV personality, there's little doubt that what he does best is play boogie-woogie piano. Backed by an energetic and enthusiastic band, his passion for brash, brassy, big-band jazz is given full reign here on an album that would have made Fats Domino or Louis Jordan proud. Admittedly, he's not a great singer, but fortunately vocalist Sam Brown is, and she appears on several tracks. Unlike ex-Stray Cats guitarist Brian Setzer-who runs his own big band in Los Angeles-Jools doesn't so much update swing-era classics, as pay homage to them with his own authentic-sounding compositions (plus a couple written with Squeeze colleague Chris Difford). Aside from a straight-ahead version of Monk's "Well You Needn't", when he does go in for a cover or two he wilfully selects either the oddball (Edwin Astley's Danger Man TV theme) or the unlikely ("Lady Madonna"). Perhaps that's the album's only weakness: Jools will insist on departing from the true path of rhythm & blues from time to time. Maybe he's just too eclectic for his own good? -Mark Walker.

Review Those Were The Days / Cream:

Among the earliest supergroups (at least in their native Britain), Cream's titanic trio-guitar god Eric Clapton, jazz bassist and vocalist Jack Bruce, and thundering drummer Ginger Baker-was justifiably revered for its vivid[EJM1], virtuoso instrumental attack. What began as a logical excursion into heavily blues- and jazz-accented power-rock shifted, on their second and best album, Disraeli Gears, into a British variant on America's psychedelia, powerfully influenced by expatriate string-slinger Jimi Hendrix. This smartly resequenced four-CD box divides the trio's four original albums into discrete studio and live segments, the latter approximating a full concert. Granted, phantom fourth member lyricist Pete Brown doesn't fare well given lyrics that now sound merely incoherent, rather than heavy, but there are still plenty of sparks flying here, as well as a panoply of powerful, indelible riffs, starting with "Sunshine of Your Love" and continuing right through "Badge. " -Sam Sutherland.
