Review Unclassified / Robert Randolph and the Family Band:Is this a big-tent revival? A funky throwdown? A jam-band juggernaut? Unclassified is all that, and so much more. The story of Robert Randolph is Hollywood-issue: kid from the gritty Jersey streets is saved from the bad life by playing steel guitar in a House of God Church. Of course, it wouldn't mean a thing if the guy couldn't play, but he can really tear it up. By updating the sacred-steel tradition with heavy doses of blues, funk, and rock, he's not only emerged with his own sound, but he's brought the music full circle, returning those pop-music styles to their gospel roots. The disc reaches some terrific heights from the very start with a fiery trio of opening songs: "Going in the Right Direction," "I Need More Love," and "Nobody" are joyous, uplifting romps brimming with the fervour of gospel music. Four instrumentals show the breadth of the sound, from the country-tinged "Squeeze" to the modal and slightly spaced-out "Calypso" to the scorching gospel-in! fused closer "Run for Your Life. " A couple of the slower tunes impede the album's momentum, but at its best Unclassified comes awfully close to capturing the intensity of the Family Band's live shows-which is no small feat indeed. -Marc Greilsamer.

Review Briefcase Full of Blues / Blues Brothers:"The Blues Brothers" began as an affectionate joke-cum-tribute to R&B music, and taken in that spirit it retained its entertainment value, even after this live album topped the charts, sold two million copies, and produced hit singles in "Rubber Biscuit" and "Soul Man". The guardians of popular music have always been entirely too reverent and humourless, however, and it wasn't long before they were levelling charges of rip-off against the Brothers and complaining that John Belushi couldn't sing as well as Otis Redding. So what? No one seems to have noticed that Belushi was as obsessive about citing his sources as Frank Sinatra is about naming his arrangers - you'd have thought those critics would have appreciated the footnotes. The beneficiaries of Belushi's encomiums didn't mind the increased exposure or the renewed royalty checks ("I suggest you buy as many blues albums as you can", Belushi told the audience), and even today, what comes across in these performances is the sincerity of feeling - that and some tasty playing from a top-notch band. -William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide.

Review The Complete Recordings: All 41 Recordings / Robert Johnson:This two-CD box contains all 41 recordings Johnson made, including 12 alternate takes, and each cut remains a classic. This set's release in 1990 caused quite a stir, selling more than 500,000 copies and, on the basis of endorsements from Eric Clapton and Keith Richards, introduced a great number of rock fans to Delta blues. Amazingly, Johnson built his enormous legacy on the strength of just two recording sessions: the first session, in November of 1936, produced among others "I Believe I'll Dust My Broom", "Sweet Home Chicago", "Cross Road Blues" and "Walkin' Blues", making it perhaps the most influential single session in blues' history. -Marc Greilsamer.

Review The Very Best of Lightnin' Hopkins: Blues Masters / Lightnin' Hopkins:Hopkins may have enjoyed unprecedented world-wide popularity as a blues and folk artist during the 1960s, but his best work was mostly recorded in the previous two decades. This Rhino selection, put together by James Austin, culls tracks recorded for labels such as Aladdin, Sittin' In With, Gold Star, Jax, Folkways and Bluesville, from 1946 to 1961. Specialists will want the complete Gold Star and Aladdin material in particular, but this is a fine sampling of Hopkins in a variety of settings most typical of his career. The 1946 "Katie May Blues" documents his early partnership with pianist Thunder Smith (hence the nickname "Lightnin'" for plain Sam Hopkins) and also shows why he felt the need to strike out on his own soon after. For most of his life Lightnin' preferred playing as a solo, and his uncanny, tersely moving guitar accompaniment for his stark, often cryptic vocals shows that this was a wise as well as economically ideal choice. The brooding "Automobile", from 1949, drives this point nicely home. In a well-balanced selection, two of the four 1961 tracks feature Sonny Terry. -Keith Shadwick.

Review His Definitive Greatest Hits / B.B. King:This two-disc set's jewel-case comes embossed with King's gold-inked signature, presumably a seal of approval for this bountiful summation of his MCA years. Beginning with B. B. 's work for ABC in the mid-1960s (the label was later swallowed up by MCA), the compilation moves through B. B. 's cream-flared 70s output, then proceeds to sew up the 1980s. The title's promise is fulfilled within this given time-period, but King's first 15 recording years are missing, as are examples of his very successful 90s work. Massed strings add drama to "The Thrill Is Gone", "Paying The Cost To Be The Boss" swaggers with crisp horn feints, "Why I Sing The Blues" is a prime example of the extended funky vamp, these 60s cuts invariably swamped with eerie guitar reverb. The 70s provided an evocative canvas for exaggerated gesture, strings and electric piano infusing the moody "Chains & Things", B. B. [+]
picking funky figures throughout "Ghetto Woman". The synthesised piano and rock-ballad melody of "Into The Night" typify his 80s flirtations with the mainstream, while 1974's collaboration with Bobby Bland set a precedent for later collaboration with U2 and Gary Moore. Tracks are chronologically jumbled, but the closing six-song run of live numbers provides a flaming finish. -Martin Longley.
