Review Her Best / Etta James:Whether she sings string-laden pop ballads, lively soul, or gritty electric blues, James's high-powered, enormously expressive voice displays a knack for passionate blues inflections. Emotionally charged ballads including "At Last" and "All I Could Do is Cry" find James blasting through the orchestra with unearthly wails and moans. "If I Can't Have You", a duet with Harvey Fuqua, drops the orchestra in favour of horn-driven R&B and "Something's Got a Hold On Me" is a gospel-flavoured romp reminiscent of Ray Charles. A live version of Jimmy Reed's "Baby, What You Want Me to Do" shows her raunchiest Chicago-blues style, and "In the Basement", with Sugar Pie DeSanto, is a funky workout. Review Spotlight Kid, the/Clear Spot / Captain Beefheart:These two albums, which appear on one CD in reverse chronological order, capture Don Van Vliet, aka Captain Beefheart consolidating his position here as the greatest surrealist white bluesman of the 20th century. The Spotlight Kid is relatively subdued and rambling by Beefheart's standards, with his Magic Band never quite lifting off. That said, "White Jam" is poignant in a Mad Hatter sort of way, while "I'm Gonna Booglarise You Baby" and "Click Clack" more than pass muster. The earlier Clear Spot, however, may well be Beefheart's finest album. Stax horns jostle with Zoot Horn Rollo's zig-zagging slide guitar, with producer Ted Templeman keeping all the deranged lateral musical thinking of "Nowadays A Woman's Gotta Hit A Man" and "Sun Zoom Spark" tightly ravelled up for maximum impact. Moods range from the bizarrely soulful "Too Much Time" to the spacebound bottleneck frenzy of "Big Eyed Beans From Venus". -David Stubbs.

Review 24 Nights: Eric Clapton Live / Eric Clapton:As revered elder rock statesman Clapton has edged towards the pop mainstream, his superlative guitar work has become increasingly less prominent on his albums. So, it's nice to have a solid showcase for his instrumental brilliance on the live 2-CD 24 Nights, which captures the highlights of an extended 1990-1991 run at London's Royal Albert Hall. The album finds Clapton performing Cream classics, solo hits, and blues standards in a variety of different band formats: with a stripped-down quartet, an expanded nine-piece, a stellar blues ensemble (including fellow axe heroes Buddy Guy, Robert Cray, and Jimmie Vaughan), and a full orchestra. The result is a fine showcase for the dazzling instrumental skills of one of rock's essential guitarists. -Scott Schinder.

Apart from two tracks cut in Memphis with Ike Turner, these Chess Studios recordings are landmarks in the development of electric Chicago blues. The Mississippi Delta native's gruff persona towers over "Smokestack Lightnin'," "Red Rooster," "Spoonful," "Evil," "Wang Dang Doodle," "Back Door Man," and others that have become standards since being "discovered" by the Rolling Stones, Clapton, The Doors, et al. Almost as influential as Wolf's bottomless growl are the guitar playing of Hubert Sumlin and the writing and direction of Willie Dixon. Review False Accusations / The Robert Cray Band:If not as impressive as Robert Cray's breakthrough recording, Bad Influence, released two years earlier, False Accusations is still a fine album with few missteps. One thing that Cray does very, very well is a blues ballad, something that his soul-inflected vocals and guitar playing suit him for. The result, on this album, is songs like the humorously bittersweet "She's Gone", the determined "The Last Time (I Get Burned Like This)", and "I've Slipped Her Mind", which perfectly captures the mood of the disappointed (but still unrealistically hopeful) suitor. The opening "Porch Light" is a scorcher with a killer bass line, and Cray's guitar on the title track in particular comes through crisp and clean. If a couple of songs (notably "Change of Heart, Change of Mind" and "Playin' In The Dirt") seem a bit lacking in energy, the rest of the CD more than makes up for it. -Genevieve Williams.
