Review The Anthology / Muddy Waters:

Muddy Waters should need no introduction. Not only did he provide a name for the world's greatest rock & roll band, but he also created the Chicago electric blues sound that's dominated the genre since he first hit the windy city in the late 1940s. His bands also featured what would become a who's who of electric blues: Little Walter, Jimmy Rogers, Otis Spann, James Cotton, Junior Wells, Buddy Guy, and the list goes on. The Anthology covers Waters's most important period: his first years at Chess through the late 1960s. All his best-known songs are featured in their definitive versions, providing the perfect introduction to a blues master who doesn't need one. -Mike Johnson.

Review Live from Mars / Ben Harper:

After four studio albums, Ben Harper has finally released Live from Mars, his first official live set, a 25-song double-disc collection that surveys each of his four albums and adds a couple of well-executed, if not terribly inventive, covers. Disc one is electric and finds Harper and the Innocent Criminals tearing through their patented mix of rock, folk, soul and blues. Yet the solo acoustic disc two is the true prize, putting the spotlight squarely on Harper's incredibly agile, versatile and enormously moving voice. In this pared-down setting, Harper shows an uncanny ability to connect with his audience, offering one spellbinding performance after another. Culled from two years' worth of shows-no two songs are taken from the same concert-Live from Mars provides a welcome overview of Harper's many facets. -Marc Greilsamer.

Review Clapton Chronicles: The Best of Eric Clapton / Eric Clapton:

If this is your first exposure to Eric Clapton, a bit of bewilderment would be in order. This is the legendary guitar icon. This is (as his early apostles once proclaimed) God. Ranging from the mid-80s through to the late 90s, The Clapton Chronicles owes less to the groundbreaking blues-rock of Clapton's 60s and 70s classics than to the polished-to-a-glare pop of Phil Collins, who produced one of the tracks included in this 14-song anthology. His reinterpretation of his greatest recording-the once-gripping, now-placid "Layla"-perhaps best illustrates Clapton at middle-age: Who wants to bask in his darkest period? Not Clapton, who converts his surging, purging charge into a soothing stroll. And perhaps not fans of such docile MOR fare as "My Father's Eyes", "Tears in Heaven" and the two new tracks, "Blue Eyes Blue" and "Get Lost". -Steven Stolder.

Review The Definitive Blues Brothers Collection / Blues Brothers:

It isn't exactly difficult to scoff at the Blues Brothers - beginning your musical career as a sketch on Saturday Night Live is not the best way to develop artistic credibility, and while Elwood Blues wasn't too shabby a harp player, his brother, Joliet Jake, sang only marginally better than that guy who used to impersonate Joe Cocker on late-night television. But no one ever bought a Blues Brothers album expecting a life-changing musical experience - these guys were there to put on a show, and putting on a great show is just what they did. It helped that Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi obviously loved the music, and they knew how to put together a killer band (any fan with the vision to hire Steve Cropper, Donald "Duck" Dunn, Steve Jordan, and Matt "Guitar" Murphy" to cover classic blues and R&B deserves credit for good taste, if nothing else). The Complete Blues Brothers pulls together material from the band's debut live album, Briefcase Full of Blues, as well as cuts from the soundtrack to The Blues Brothers movie (including contributions from Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin). Play it loud and dance a lot - John would have wanted it that way. -Mark Deming, All Music Guide.

Review John Wesley Harding / Bob Dylan:

Bob Dylan's remarkable first album after his debilitating 1966 motorcycle accident isn't as urgent as the ambitious folk and rock songs he wrote earlier in the decade. Even considering the rocking "All Along the Watchtower" (covered famously by Jimi Hendrix), the album's overall feeling is soft and laid-back, all gently strummed guitars, perfectly timed harmonicas, and some of Dylan's best pure singing to date. The 1968 release sounds as if the songwriter and his three sidemen set up a few tape recorders in a bedroom and began playing as soon as they woke up in the morning. They open with the title track (a folk fable), move into the piano-driven "Dear Landlord", and close with the sweet love song "I'll Be Your Baby Tonight". -Steve Knopper.

Review Fight for Your Mind / Ben Harper:

Fragile in most spots, ferocious in others, Harper's second album makes for a stirring listen. Harper's music preaches awareness-whether it is political, social, spiritual or personal-though he is more concerned with getting people to look for answers themselves than with providing answers for them. To get across such a range of ideas requires a full range of musical styles, and Harper incorporates elements of many to craft a unique whole. Though the record is mostly of a reflective tone, Harper's Weissenborn guitar can act as an effective weapon as well as a soothing embrace, and even in the music's quietest moments, there is a sense of urgency. And despair. And hope. -Marc Greilsamer.

Review Traffic / Traffic:

Thirty years of rock radio have cast Traffic largely in the context of its later years as songwriter, singer, and keyboard player Steve Winwood's platform for jazz-inflected progressive rock, but their second, self-titled 1968 album reflects the equal weight of guitarist Dave Mason's voice, guitar, and songs. Together with drummer and third vocalist Jim Capaldi, and Chris Wood's evocative sax and flute, this is Traffic at its most earthy, most concise, and arguably most coherent-even when the bulk of the songs are set as fevered dreams, surreal ballads, or outright nightmares. Winwood showcases like "Pearly Queen" and "Forty Thousand Headmen" are matched by Mason's classic "Feelin' Alright" and Beatle-browed "You Can All Join In", while the playing and arrangements are spirited and tight. -Sam Sutherland.

Review Hoodoo Man Blues / Junior Wells:

This 1965 album is where vocalist and harmonica player Junior Wells comes into his own. An early collaboration with Buddy Guy, the two of them sum up the 1960s funk-rock-blues that lay ahead. Hoodoo Man Blues inspired Paul Butterfield, Eric Clapton and a host of other musician-fans. Wells and Guy don't shy from creating James Brown-funkified blues, or from putting a rock edge to their blues; but neither do they shy from traditional blues. Their version of "Good Morning Little School Girl" is a proper update-still menacing, with less of a country blues feel. Also not to be missed is the instrumental workout "Chitlin Con Carne". -Robert Gordon.
