Review Threesome: Mexican Standoff/Don't Ask Don't Tell/Got No Strings / Michelle Shocked:Ambition is certainly something that Michelle Shocked is not lacking. Many would also claim that as she is releasing three albums on one day, she is not lacking in foolhardiness either. There have been instances of artists releasing two albums at once (Tom Waits, Bruce Springsteen, Bright Eyes), but three at once is unique, if unsurprising given Shocked's fondness for trilogies. Given the stylistic differences between the three as well, it's small wonder that these are independent releases with no major backing - such a display of generosity would send any company pulling the purse strings tighter than a noose. As a demonstration of Shocked's ability to move masterfully between genres, Mexican Standoff is very successful. From the off, all the elements previously on show in her Latino-tinged work are present, from the mariachi trumpet to the impassioned Mexican backing vocals, replaced in the second half of the album by her more familiar southern Blues style. Don't Ask, Don't Tell is strongest of the triumvirate, and best represents the familiar Shocked style. Dealing primarily with a painful divorce, the songs are intimate and disquieting as all great break-up songs are (think Blood On the Tracks crossed with Maria McKee's Life Is Sweet), but created with far more grace and restraint. Indeed, the opening "Early Morning Saturday" sounds positively upbeat, before the metaphorical walls come tumbling down. The material may be lyrically downbeat, but the sound is tempting and varied. [+]
Traces of Dylan's vocal style in "How You Play The Game" rub up against the eerie monologue of "Don't Ask", on an album full of twists and turns. As part of the trilogy, it's the jewel in the crown; as a standalone album it's simply magnificent. Certainly the oddest of the three albums, Got No Strings is a semi-concept album of Disney film tunes retooled with pedal steel, Grapelli-style fiddle and other jazz accoutrements instead of the overblown sound of Disney tradition, is probably the barometer that will either irk or appeal. It's probably the most commercially charming album, and the material is well executed and very familiar, which means that this could find Shocked reaching a wider audience. What her long-term fans will make of it is another matter. However, with the wealth of riches that three simultaneous albums bring, the faithful fans should view this as a quaint bonus. -Thom Allott.

Review Old Ties / Norman Blake:With a spot on the O Brother soundtrack and Down From the Mountain tour, singer and multi-instrumentalist Norman Blake was introduced to a host of roots-music fans for the first time. Yet, anyone with even a passing interest in old-time and bluegrass music surely knew of Norman Blake 30 years prior to the turn-of-the-century bluegrass boom. In addition to his many fine solo recordings, Blake has played with names like Dylan, Cash, and Kristofferson, not to mention his place on 1972's Will The Circle Be Unbroken, the O Brother of its day. This 19-track compilation cherry-picks from his Rounder and Flying Fish albums dating back to 1972 and offers a mix of traditional songs and originals, instrumentals (both delicate and hot-picked) and vocals, solos, duos, trios, and quartets. As such it showcases the full range of Blake's talents: an uncanny blend of blistering speed, unerring taste and rhythmic precision on guitar, an endearing, understated singing style and a deep appreciation for beautiful melodies. -Marc Greilsamer.

Review Foundation: the Doc Watson Guitar Instrumental Collection 1964-1998 / Doc Watson:North Carolina's Doc Watson is considered one of country music's most influential guitar players. His blend of Appalachian folk, blues, country, gospel and bluegrass first gained steam nationally during a 1963 Newport Folk Festival appearance, and this anthology of instrumentals begins with "Black Mountain Rag" from his self-titled debut record from the following year. Foundation borrows 16 tracks from 11 albums-nearly 35 years' worth of material-from his earliest recordings for Vanguard through the 1970s and 1980s duets with his late son Merle (who accompanies on banjo and guitar). Doc's voice serves only as an introduction to several of the collection's live numbers, letting his strings do the talking where it counts: on cap-tipping covers of songs by John D Loudermilk, Maybelle Carter and Molly O'Day, and on the nearly half-dozen rags that best display Doc's trademark flat-picking frenzy. -Scott Holter.
