Review Live in America / Victor Wooten:The downside of declining CD-manufacturing costs is that artists feel free to put out even their most ephemeral musical musings. Victor Wooten's Live in America, though full of masterful moments, has chaff amongst the wheat. There's stage patter that might have been fun if you were there, slight 1970s pop-funk ("What Did He Say" and "Hormones in the Headphones"), disco ("Yinin' and Yangin'") and Hendrix and Ozzy quotes in order to get to instrumentals such as "Sacred Silence/The Jam Man" and "Miller Time" (featuring Marcus Miller), which offer the kind of soulful and mind-altering bass guitar work that the man does best. Wooten is a willful eclectic and, as his work with Bela Fleck proves, that can be fine. Still, though the musicians do a workmanlike job here, it takes a band of equal virtuosos such as the Flecktones, and some serious editing to make this kind of genre-hopping truly work. His bandmates refer to him as "The Teacher" in his introduction and Live in America should inspire bass students to practice. It is to be hoped it will teach them the dangers of self-indulgence too. -Michael Ross.

This cozy, comfortable record culls 14 songs recorded at an assortment of relaxed, informal, after-dinner sessions at Grisman's studio. As it moves from Jimmie Rodgers to Bill Monroe to jazz standards to traditional blues to rippling fiddle tunes, the record beautifully illustrates where the common ground lies. Review Fair Weather / Alison Brown:One of the many virtues of bluegrass is its musical democracy. Alison Brown may be a banjo player of surpassing brilliance, but on Fair Weather she willingly shares the spotlight with what amounts to a bluegrass all-star band. Mandolin magician Sam Bush, mean fiddler Darol Anger and fellow progressive banjo virtuoso Bela Fleck are just some of the acoustic giants on hand to help Brown rediscover her roots. The result is an exuberant, wide-ranging exploration of everything that is fresh and dynamic about bluegrass. Aside from revelling in the sheer delight of their communal instrumental prowess, the assembled musicians also offer a few new twists on the traditional format. On "Shake and Howdy", Brown, Anger and mandolinist Mike Marshall play a folk tune like it's a classical trio, while Sam Bush sings a version of Elvis Costello's "Everyday I Write The Book" that makes it sound like a bluegrass original. Brown rounds things off with a subtle solo piece for banjo ("Sweet Thing") that reveals the instrument's full and often untapped range of expressive possibilities.
