Review Alison Krauss And Union Station - Live [2002] (NTSC) / Proper Music Distribution:If you love concert DVDs that offer first-rate music, excellent sound and picture, a beautiful setting, and substantial bonus features, then Alison Krauss and Union Station Live is destined to become your new favourite. It's not just for bluegrass fans either, as proven by Krauss's crossover success on the smash soundtrack of O Brother, Where Art Thou? as well as her pop-orientated hits such as "Now That I've Found You". That song plus "The Lucky One", "When You Say Nothing at All", and others are the perfect showcase for Krauss's meltingly gorgeous voice, and admirers of the concert's two-CD set will also find out how funny she is in her between-songs banter. AKUS has never been all about Krauss, however, so there are also instrumental jams plus featured spots for other members, including Dan Tyminski on O Brother's rousing "I Am a Man of Constant Sorrow". The second DVD offers 50 minutes of interviews in which all five members plus drummer Larry Atamanuik discuss their influences, their instruments and their favourite songs. There's also backstage and road footage, baby pictures and more. Perhaps the only disappointment is that two songs from the CDs are not included in the concert: "Down to the River to Pray", which is heard over the end credits but not shown on stage, and "There Is a Reason". -David Horiuchi.

Review Everytime You Say Goodbye / Alison Krauss:Over the course of her first albums, including her fourth, 1992's Every Time You Say Goodbye, Alison Krauss probably did more than any of her contemporaries to attract mainstream-country attention to bluegrass. A traditionalist might say this is because Krauss and her band, Union Station, offer a kind of "bluegrass-lite" that's cut with pop sensibility, without any manic-fast picking and awash in Krauss's goes-down-easy vocal. Nonetheless, this is a solid album that pushed Krauss deservedly further into the limelight. Highlights include the title track, Union Station banjo picker Ron Block's fine gospel number "Shield of Faith", and the traditional instrumental "Cluck Old Hen". -Anders Smith-Lindall.

Review Death Chants Breakdowns and Military Waltzes / John Fahey:This inspired collection reissues all the music from John Fahey's genre-expansive, groundbreaking 1964 disc Death Chants and its (mostly) rerecorded version from 1967. On both discs Fahey's finger picking is nimble and awe-inspiring, his head afire with ideas both revolutionary and musically pure. His goal was to reconcile a love for American primitive folk traditions and 20th-century classical music; by 1967 he'd largely succeeded. Death Chants is one of the most intense, life-affirming, and visionary recordings of the 1960s, and the clear (and thankfully not digitally messed-with) sound plus context-heavy, insightful liner notes by Byron Coley make the reissue a must even for folks who own the original artifacts. -Mike McGonigal.

Review Chinatown / Be Good Tanyas:If, as many purists believe, the best country music is the bleakest, then Chinatown is a tremendous leap forward for the Be Good Tanyas. Whereas their debut album, The Blue Horse, focused on the sweeter side of traditional Appalachian music with a chirpy, naïve charm, Chinatown finds the three Canadian songbirds diving headlong into the dark. For their second release, the Be Good Tanyas follow the traditionalist route mapped out by Emmylou Harris and Dolly Parton, eschewing the neo-traditionalism of Alison Krauss and Nickel Creek which was hinted at on The Blue Horse. The result is a revelation. Chinatown drips with twisted pathos, reflected in both their choices of songs (Townes Van Zandt's "Waiting Around to Die", their self-penned "Junkie Song" and the modern standards "House of the Rising Sun" and "In My Time of Dying") and their delivery, which is sincere without being overly maudlin. Chinatown's slower pace, and overall more melancholy theme, allow the trio more room to flex their three-part vocal harmonies and able fingerpicking skills, which they flesh out once again with the non-traditional (but always subtle) backing of bass and drums. This results in an inspired and breathtaking reading of Van Zandt's "Waiting Around to Die", as well as a relatively upbeat take on the traditional "Reuben", here reclaimed as a sort of bluegrass "I Will Survive". Though not as polished as its predecessor, Chinatown is just as much a gem. -Robert Burrow.
