Review Midwinter / Various:Free Reed's award-winning Revival Masters series of box-sets has so far explored the careers of some of the greatest folk and folk-rock stars (most recently, the best-selling RT - The Life & Music of Richard Thompson): their Cropredy Capers celebrated the world's longest running folk-rock festival, while their epic Transports set told the story of the birth of Australia. Review Been All Around This World / Jerry Garcia:This (possibly) final instalment in the Garcia/Grisman series leans heavily on country music, as the pair tackle tracks by Jimmie Rodgers, Merle Travis (a jazzed-up "Nine Pound Hammer"), George Jones, Mel Tillis (a bluesy, gently shuffling "I Ain't Never") and Freddie Hart. They also make detours into the realms of traditional folk, reggae (Jimmy Cliff's "Sittin' Here in Limbo"), soul (Garcia's passionate run through James Brown's "I'll Go Crazy" gets an E for effort) and Bob Dylan (a delightfully understated "Ballad of Frankie Lee and Judas Priest"). Sure, Garcia's vocal cords might have seen better days, but you can never find fault with his heartfelt, emotionally captivating singing. Review Mercury / Longview:Manchester-based indie-rock outfit Longview are in pursuit of a grand, romantic-indeed, religious-vision, and on their debut album, Mercury, they realise it with no lack of wide-eyed faith. "God's love will save our lives / It will come shining bright," sings frontman Rob McVey on the opening "Further", indicating, in this age when Christian rock is typically dismissed as the tritest of the trite, a rather surprising bravery of conviction. Luckily, however, there's far more to Mercury than over-serious religious zeal. Fulsome guitar vistas like "Will You Wait Here" and "Electricity" touch at the dreamy psychedelia of fellow Mancunians Doves or Elbow-albeit an Elbow realised without Guy Garvey's trademarked curmudgeonly attitude and invested with a hearty optimism. Importantly, for Longview, there are hit singles in the waiting here: "I Would" is a windswept take on the sort of lilting piano balladry that Coldplay did before them, and Echo and the Bunnymen did long before them; and the thunderous "When You Sleep" marches along with a righteous ire little seen since the Smiths flounced through these parts. -Louis Pattison.

Review Home / Dixie Chicks:On Home-which they coproduced with Lloyd Maines, the father of lead singer Natalie-the Dixie Chicks strip off the star-making gloss of Nashville and get down to the meat of the matter, turning out an acoustic record that gives a big Texas howdy to bluegrass. But that's only the framework they use to salute all their influences, from the raggedy rock of Little Feat (on Darrell Scott's irresistible "Long Time Gone") to the pained ballads of Stevie Nicks (covering her melancholy "Landslide") to the confessional Texas singer-songwriters who straddle the country-folk line (Patty Griffin, Bruce Robison). Maines's raw, irrepressible soprano remains a thing of wonder, as do the threesome's exquisite harmonies, which seem tighter and more organic than ever before. Still, the jaw-dropping thrills come from the passionate and masterful picking of Emily Robison on banjo, bluegrass guitarist Bryan Sutton and Adam Steffey, whose fluid mandolin does Bill Monroe proud.
