Review The Three Pickers / Three Pickers:The Three Pickers brings together bluegrass legends Earl Scruggs, Doc Watson and Ricky Skaggs for the first time, capturing performances at a North Carolina concert for PBS's Great Performances series. It was a celebratory occasion, and this live session, supersaturated with hot licks and down-home warmth, successfully transmits the excitement of the event. For all the assembled instrumental expertise, it is the traditional vocals-with Skaggs leading the way-that make the music work. The trio opens with the lively "Feast Here Tonight", featuring scintillating sounds from Skaggs's mandolin, Scruggs's banjo and Watson's guitar, before taking on the high, lonesome gospel of "What Would You Give in Exchange for Your Soul". Each member of the trio gets feature spots for his individual band, in addition to the dozen or so songs on which the three combine forces. Watson is joined by grandson Richard for a couple of country blues tunes before Scruggs, reinforced by his family and friends, takes over for two songs, showcasing his seminal banjo technique on "Earl's Breakdown". Review I Feel Alright / Steve Earle:A little bit country, a little bit rock and roll, Steve Earle has bounced between those extremes for years, producing great albums of nearly-straight country and totally-hard rock. On I Feel Alright, though, Earle finally finds a way to blend the styles seamlessly. Whether begging for a forgiveness he probably doesn't deserve on the deceptively sweet "Valentine's Day", or steadfastly refusing even the idea of forgiveness on the Stonesy "Unrepentant", Earle rocks and twangs in equal measure-and never more thrillingly than on "You're Still Standing There", his grateful duet with Lucinda Williams. Review Not for Kids Only / David Grisman:An aptly named album if ever there was one, Not for Kids Only combines the talents of two legendary performers, the late Jerry Garcia, singer/guitarist of the Grateful Dead, and David Grisman, mandolinist and father of "dawg music", a melding of bluegrass, jazz, swing, Latin and Jewish klezmer sounds. On this 1993 recording, the two devoted friends make seemingly effortless music, adapting traditional and old-time folk into a personalised sound so "homemade" (with jew's-harp and tambourine) as to inspire any child, young or old, to pick up whatever's at hand to play along. Review The Best of New Grass Revival / New Grass Revival:Virtuoso instrumental insurgents, the NGR brought the counterculture into bluegrass festivals during the '70s, and altered the music forever with daring, extended, jazz-influenced jams. Over two decades the band went through various line-up changes, and this generous single-disc retrospective concentrates on the classic '80s unit, featuring founder Sam Bush on fiddle and mandolin, John Cowan on bass and vocals, Bela Fleck on banjo, and Pat Flynn on guitar and vocals.
