Review Kevin and Perry - Go Large Ost / Original Soundtrack:

Meaty, bouncy and trancey-this is the sound of someone's summer. It is certainly the soundtrack for the one million Britons that visit Ibiza each year. Harry Enfield's brassy parody of the scene exploits this by including tracks from Underworld, Fatboy Slim and Fragma ("Toca's Miracle") which catch the ambience, decadence and speed of the Balearic isle. The exclusives cut for the movie are more intriguing: Enfield and Kathy Burke's novelty banger "Precocious Brat" and trancehead Matt Darey's piece for Rhys Ifans, "Eyeball Paul Theme Tune". Although it must be hard to mock the sound of Ibiza when the island's favoured records are either cheap and fast or absurdly pompous, Hybrid suceed. They catch its bombastic sonority with a dire cover of The Pretender's "Kid", and Jools Holland and JK's version of "I'm In The Mood for Love" seems to sum up the entire project-amusing but hardly essential. Tony Marcus.

Review Halfway Between the Gutter and the Stars / Fatboy Slim:

Fatboy Slim has come a long way since his debut album, Better Living Through Chemistry, saw him bring big beat to the masses. His first offering of the new millennium, Halfway Between the Gutter and the Stars was his most ambitious project to date. Married life and impending fatherhood seemed to have made the original party animal grow up, and this was reflected in the new and improved sound-the banging floor-fillers being replaced by a more refined and adult sound, as he teamed up with Bootsy Collins and Macy Gray to bring a fantastic blend of funk and soul to the dance floor. His collaborations with Macy Gray are two of the standout tracks-"Love Life" and "Demons" effortlessly combine funky fluid beats and Macy's distinctive vocals with fantastic results. Jim Morrison even pops up, providing the haunting looped sample for the first single to be taken from the album-"Sunset (Bird of Prey)". Purist fans of his previous output won't be disappointed by his change of direction, as tracks like "Ya Mama" and "Mad Flava" are instantly recognisable as vintage Fatboy Slim-big of beats and samples. The sound of a man growing old disgracefully. -Helen Marquis.

Review The Fat of the Land [VINYL] / Prodigy:

Music For The Jilted Generation, despite commercial success, was a harsh underground rave statement proving that Essex rave auteur Liam Howlett could transcend the novelty acid house of many of his peers. Fat Of The Land, however, showed a very different side to The Prodigy; the exaggerated punk pastiche of "Firestarter" and "Breathe", with vocals provided by the band's cartoon Johnny Rotten, Keith Flint, proved that The Prodigy were, at heart, showmen. Fat was as influenced by American punk as it was by any form of dance music-demonstrated with a furious cover of L7's "Fuel My Fire"-and such a destructive, passionate fusion saw The Prodigy topping festival bills all over the world. Elsewhere, "Mindfields" and the irrepressibly controversial "Smack My Bitch Up" were brutal techno assaults, but driven by a defiantly heavy metal sensibility. Fat may have alienated the raving "old-skool", but it deservedly elevated The Prodigy to national public enemies. -Louis Pattison.

Review Brothers Gonna Work It Out [DJ Mix Album] / Chemical Brothers:

Perhaps once you become as famous and as in demand as Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons, the world is your oyster and it's up to you to select the pearls. As the Chemical Brothers, these two DJs have turned the anonymous world of club DJ-ing into celebrity sport and ushered in the electronica wave. From Britain with love, the Brothers send this hourlong collection of remixes on which they seamlessly traverse everything from '70s soul (Willie Hutch's "Brothers Gonna Work It Out") to their own "Block Rockin' Beats" to industrial faves Meat Beat Manifesto and Renegade Soundwave, ending their trip with a treatment of Spiritualized's "Think I'm in Love. " The pace is relentless, the demands of the dance floor being never-ending. And while much of their stuff is just a matter of getting devilish with the dials and juicing everything up, the CBs have managed to bring some fine taste to their party as the ultimate gift. -Rob O'Connor.

Review Fight Club (Music from Dust Brothers) / The Dust Brothers:

The Dust Brothers are best known as the production duo that everyone from the Beastie Boys to Beck and White Zombie have turned to for help behind the mixing board (and to great results). With the soundtrack to Fight Club (the movie based on the Chuck Palahniuk novel), we finally get a glimpse of one of the duo's original creations. Filled with dark techno and sparse industrial passages, it's a bleak though interesting listen. Sinister funk gives way to medieval chants on "Homework", but the bulk of this disc is all about samples and synths. Don't expect to find the quirks of Paul's Boutique or Odelay here, but in terms of good movie mood music, the Dust Brothers have done it again. -Jason Verlinde.

Review Bow Down to the Exit Sign / David Holmes:

David Holmes has always been pretty eclectic in his musical outlook. Starting life as a Northern Irish punk, his 12-year musical journey has seen him release nosebleed techno, off-kilter breaks and dubbed-out hip-hop. Famously, he's also written the soundtrack to a major Hollywood blockbuster (1998's "Out Of Sight"). With his third studio album, he's decided to change tack again, charging off in a darker, dirtier direction. Bow Down To The Exit Sign is a soundtrack. Holmes does his best to distort and disturb, fusing fuzzy funk, low-slung blues and organ-drenched psychedelia. There are a couple of twisted punk-rock numbers featuring Jon Spencer (of Blues Explosion) and Bobby Gillespie (of Primal Scream), and a soundtrack piece written with Bond composer David Arnold. If that wasn't enough to set the pulse racing, Tricky's former vocal foil, Martina sings a couple of tracks and beat poet Carl Hancock Rux adds harrowing narration to Holmes's intense hallucinogenic vision. Bow Down To The Exit Sign may be dark and disturbed, but it's also one of the most compelling albums in recent years. -Matt Anniss.

Review Live at the Social Vol.1 / Various Artists:

Formed in 1990 by Jeff Barrett (ex-PR for Happy Mondays), Heavenly Records soon built up a happily eclectic roster including St Etienne , Flowered Up and the Manic Street Preachers. Noting the Manc unian indie/dance crossover heralded by the press, Barrett went one step further, organising the He avenly Social, at The Albany in London's West End (later at the East End's Turnmills). This Sunday afternoon club, like the label, dealt in all musical forms-reggae, soul, hip-hop, dance-proving i mmensely popular. This, the first of three Social releases, is a well-chosen mix by the Chemical Brothers, taking in such varied flo or-fillers as Meat Beat Manifesto 's pounding "Cutman", Red Snapper's cool, jazzy "Wesley Don't Surf" and the Chemicals' own hard-to-find reworking of The Charlatans' "Nine Acre Court. Warm"; pulsing and imagina tive, it manages to be merrily nostalgic while retaining sonic relevance. Excellent. -Dominic W ills.

Review Come Get It I Got It / David Holmes:

Swiftly becoming Hollywood's cinematic composer of choice, the Belfast-born wonder-DJ David Holmes dusts off his record box for this first release on his own 13 Amp label, Come Get It I Got It. Featuring a sublime selection of obscure R&B, soul and funk alongside Holmes' self-penned material (under the guise of Free Association), it's an intriguing and eclectic romp with some of the 1960s and 1970s greatest unsung heroes. More vital than his Essential Mix 98/01, Come Get It. kicks off with the gorgeous acid-tinged folk of Rodriguez's "Sugarman", before unleashing the raw soulful delights of Hodges, James, Smith & Crawford's "Nobody" and Betty Adams' fervent "Make It Real". Infectious experimental funk comes courtesy of the Johnny Otis Show's "Country Girl" and Cyril Neville's "Gossip" while Muddy Waters' masterfully delivers growling psychedelic blues on "Tom Cat". But the highlight has to be the absolutely hilarious, eccentric and bizarrely sexy cover of "Purple Haze" by Johnny Jones and The King Casuals, a favourite in Holmes' DJ set since he was 15, its camp genius is irresistible. Tied together with the sample-heavy retro-chic of Free Association, this is the soundtrack to one highly sexed, drug-fuelled, occasionally disturbed but genuinely joyous lifestyle. -Christopher Barrett.

Review Scorpio Rising / Death In Vegas:

Scorpio Rising follows the same approach as Death in Vegas' remarkable predecessor, The Contino Sessions. Richard Fearless and Tim Holmes corral a host of special guests to populate their barbed soundscapes and their knack for finding the perfect environment to bring out the best in their chosen guest is as sure as ever. Liam Gallagher excels himself on the title track, inspired by cult filmmaker Kenneth Anger's celebrated movie, Paul Weller brings just the right measure of disdain to a simmering version of Gene Clark's "So You Say You Lost Your Baby", while Hope Sandoval's sultry tones bring a sensual glow to the storming finale "Help Yourself". Throughout, Indian violinist Doctor Subramanian helps flesh out the eclectic but perfectly tailored backing tracks. Fearless and Holmes display the sort of insight that would be the envy of any record company A&R department. -Gavin Martin.

Review Singles 1993-2003 / Chemical Brothers:

To remain relevant after a decade in the music industry is rare indeed; for a dance act, it's virtually unique. Singles 93-03 ably demonstrates how the Chemical Brothers have managed it. Having first carved a reputation as DJs the Dust Brothers in the early 1990s, the two home-counties history graduates narrowly avoided calling themselves the London Dust Explosion before spearheading big beat, becoming a huge live draw, collaborating with Noel Gallagher and having Glastonbury Festival founder Michael Eavis play "Hey Boy, Hey Girl" at his wedding. It's been 10 years of fun, frolics and gigantean left-field beats for Ed Simmons and Tom Rowland and, as this faultless singles collection testifies, continual reinvention. From the seething siren, pounding breaks, breathy vocals and spellbinding post-acid electronica of album opener "Song to the Siren" to the ingenious collaboration with the Flaming Lips, "The Golden Path", Tom 'n' Ed have somehow managed to carve tracks that appeal equally to radio, clubs and the live arena. Alongside the cement-cracking bass of "Leave Home" and "Block Rockin' Beats" comes the high-inducing sonic debauchery of "The Private Psychedelic Reel" and dancefloor filler "Star Guitar", to name but a few of the many highlights. Ingenious, boundary-baffling stuff, this compilation offers a hypnotic historical tour of one of the most creative careers in dance music. -Christopher Barrett.

Review Southern Fried Records Presents Big Beach Boutique II / Various Artists:

For a few hours one scorching July day, Brighton Beach became the venue for the Big Beach Boutique 2, one of the biggest parties the UK has ever seen. Thanks to the city's star resident, one Mr Cook, 250,000 revellers were able to forget a decade of shindig-stifling legislation and party for free while perfecting that great move, "the pebble shuffle". Predictably, a wave of negative press followed, but for anyone who was there, it was one of the most memorable events since the sun set on the Summer of Love. It's near impossible to bottle that kind of atmosphere, but Big Beach Boutique 2 is a good attempt to bring the sun to your speakers. While excerpts from support DJ sets such as Groove Armada's mid-pace "Superstylin" and the Lo Fidelity Allstars feisty "Tied to the Mast" create a carnival feel, its only when Cook kicks off with Tim Deluxe's "It Just Won't Do (dub)" that things really get going. Not the most eclectic mix album ever, the barrage of tech-house does become a little tiresome, and Mint Royale's "Sexiest Man in Jamaica" doesn't work so well off the beach. But, with superb moments such as Cook's magnificent mix of X Press 2's "Lazy", all told it's a great slice of nostalgia. -Christopher Barrett.

Review Live on Brighton Beach / Fatboy Slim:

On a crystal clear English summer's evening in the summer of 2001, Norman Cook played his most celebrated DJ set Live On Brighton Beach. In front of an estimated 30,000 loved-up Brightonians dancing on the pebbles, the man known to millions as Fatboy Slim took to the decks for two hours of typically hedonistic party mayhem. It's these two hours-or, at least, an edited version of them-that make our Norm's first mix album in yonks and a perfect souvenir of the night now known as "Normstock". Sound wise, the album sees Mr Zoe Ball doing what he does best-mashing up thumping dancefloor favourites in a sweat-drenched party stylee. Those expecting classic big beat belters are in for a shock, though, 'cos these days the Fatboy is more into straight-up house and techno-albeit with the aforementioned party twist. So, we get some of 2001's biggest records-Basement Jaxx's "Where's Your Head At?", Raven Maze's "The Real Life", a couple from Santos-alongside a smatering of classics (Leftfield's "Phat Planet", an anthemic version of Underworld's "Born Slippy") and the off Fatboy number to keep the punters sweet. The result is a hot, sweaty, grimy mix that perfectly captures the sound and feel of Norman Cook's DJ sets, even if it does feel a touch out of date. -Matt Anniss.
