Review Experience / The Prodigy:Before music journalists were throwing around terms like "drum & bass" or jungle, the Prodigy's Liam Howlett was creating high-energy dance music by marrying sampled, pitch-shifted beats to all manner of electronic timbres. This album has it all: complicated break beats, housey piano riffs, lush analog pads, frenetic and computeresque melodies, and subsonic bass. In fact, the mélange is so dense that the material demands full attention and repeated listenings to gain a complete understanding of the rhythmic interplay. -Michael A. Massa.

Review Live on Brighton Beach / Fatboy Slim:On a crystal clear English summer's evening in the summer of 2001, Norman Cook played his most celebrated DJ set Live On Brighton Beach. In front of an estimated 30,000 loved-up Brightonians dancing on the pebbles, the man known to millions as Fatboy Slim took to the decks for two hours of typically hedonistic party mayhem. It's these two hours-or, at least, an edited version of them-that make our Norm's first mix album in yonks and a perfect souvenir of the night now known as "Normstock". Sound wise, the album sees Mr Zoe Ball doing what he does best-mashing up thumping dancefloor favourites in a sweat-drenched party stylee. Those expecting classic big beat belters are in for a shock, though, 'cos these days the Fatboy is more into straight-up house and techno-albeit with the aforementioned party twist. So, we get some of 2001's biggest records-Basement Jaxx's "Where's Your Head At?", Raven Maze's "The Real Life", a couple from Santos-alongside a smatering of classics (Leftfield's "Phat Planet", an anthemic version of Underworld's "Born Slippy") and the off Fatboy number to keep the punters sweet. The result is a hot, sweaty, grimy mix that perfectly captures the sound and feel of Norman Cook's DJ sets, even if it does feel a touch out of date. -Matt Anniss.

Review The Fat of the Land / The Prodigy:Music For The Jilted Generation, despite commercial success, was a harsh underground rave statement proving that Essex rave auteur Liam Howlett could transcend the novelty acid house of many of his peers. Fat Of The Land, however, showed a very different side to The Prodigy; the exaggerated punk pastiche of "Firestarter" and "Breathe", with vocals provided by the band's cartoon Johnny Rotten, Keith Flint, proved that The Prodigy were, at heart, showmen. Fat was as influenced by American punk as it was by any form of dance music-demonstrated with a furious cover of L7's "Fuel My Fire"-and such a destructive, passionate fusion saw The Prodigy topping festival bills all over the world. Elsewhere, "Mindfields" and the irrepressibly controversial "Smack My Bitch Up" were brutal techno assaults, but driven by a defiantly heavy metal sensibility. Fat may have alienated the raving "old-skool", but it deservedly elevated The Prodigy to national public enemies. -Louis Pattison.

Review Come Get It I Got It / David Holmes:Swiftly becoming Hollywood's cinematic composer of choice, the Belfast-born wonder-DJ David Holmes dusts off his record box for this first release on his own 13 Amp label, Come Get It I Got It. Featuring a sublime selection of obscure R&B, soul and funk alongside Holmes' self-penned material (under the guise of Free Association), it's an intriguing and eclectic romp with some of the 1960s and 1970s greatest unsung heroes. More vital than his Essential Mix 98/01, Come Get It. kicks off with the gorgeous acid-tinged folk of Rodriguez's "Sugarman", before unleashing the raw soulful delights of Hodges, James, Smith & Crawford's "Nobody" and Betty Adams' fervent "Make It Real". Infectious experimental funk comes courtesy of the Johnny Otis Show's "Country Girl" and Cyril Neville's "Gossip" while Muddy Waters' masterfully delivers growling psychedelic blues on "Tom Cat". But the highlight has to be the absolutely hilarious, eccentric and bizarrely sexy cover of "Purple Haze" by Johnny Jones and The King Casuals, a favourite in Holmes' DJ set since he was 15, its camp genius is irresistible. Tied together with the sample-heavy retro-chic of Free Association, this is the soundtrack to one highly sexed, drug-fuelled, occasionally disturbed but genuinely joyous lifestyle. -Christopher Barrett.

Review The Contino Sessions / Death In Vegas:From the dizzying, ominous building chords of the opening "Dirge" to the frazzled exorcism of the closing "Neptune City", The Contino Sessions is a tooth-and-nail battle against Richard Fearless' demons. That's the last time any lazy journalist calls Death In Vegas a big beat act. This is the culmination of a long journey from Fearless' inauspicious beginnings-a Chemical Brothers protegé, playing records at the Heavenly Social-but then, The Contino Sessions is infused with a sense of all-conquering, boundless re-invention. Fearless has re-sparked the garage-punk tradition, and he's even enlisted some of junk-rock's old guard to help out. Primal Scream's Bobby Gillespie wheezes his way through the smacked-out groove of "Soul Auctioneer", the Jesus & Mary Chain's Jim Reid hisses dirty threats on "Broken Little Sister" and even Iggy Pop shows up to contemplate multiple homicide on "Aisha". Mindless hedonism wearing a little thin? Death In Vegas' bleak rockin' beats end the party with decadent style. -Louis Pattison Richard Fearless has earned his name. Death in Vegas's 1997 debut, Dead Elvis, established him as a defiant DJ, mixing techno with weird dub, rock, and industrial. Despite itself, the disc spawned a hit ("Dirt"), an experience he may have wished to replicate here, though Contino pushes even harder in multiple directions. Many high-profile guests add to the blend of smooth grooves, noisy ambience, and raucous rock rhythms. [+]
Primal Scream's Bobby Gillespie conjures a laid-back hip-hop posture for "Soul Auctioneer," while Jim Reid makes "Broken Little Sister" sound a lot like his own band, Jesus and Mary Chain. On "Aisha," Iggy Pop's wicked monologue could rival Nick Cave's creep-factor were it not for Fearless's musical playfulness. From gospel choirs and organs to Americana twang, deep bass rumblings to spacey sci-fi sounds, The Contino Sessions is a psychedelic trip with bravery and grit. -Liisa Ladouceur.

Review Dig Your Own Hole / The Chemical Brothers:To follow up their bombastic 1995 album Exit Planet Dust, the Chemical Brothers fine-tuned their bombastic beats and produced a rock-solid pop album (pun intended). Dig Your Own Hole finds the common ground between rock & roll and techno, both in spirit and substance. Singles like "Block Rockin' Beats," "Elektrobank," and "Setting Sun" (featuring vocals by Oasis's Noel Gallagher) may lack the big hair and pomposity of rock music, but they make up for it in spades, with sampled and real guitars battling for space with sirens and distorted hip-hop drums. The album reeks of pure enthusiasm and energy, evoking a crowd-pleasing exuberance that makes Dig Your Own Hole a Back in Black for the late 1990s. Pure stadium techno. -Matthew Corwine.

Review Music for the Jilted Generation / The Prodigy:Crawling out of the end of the rave scene, the Prodigy's second album went straight in at number one in the charts. All the tracks have the unique stamp of Liam Howlett and the boys, from the hypnotic atmosphere of aggression and attitude on "Poison" and "Voodoo People" to the guitar-driven "Their Law" (featuring the now defunct Pop Will Eat Itself) and the breakbeat tech-house of "No Good (Start the Dance)". One of the few dance acts to retain underground credibility and huge mainstream popularity, Music For The Jilted Generation shows The Prodigy at their best. Any modern music collection seems barren without its presence. -Ed Potton.

Review Exit Planet Dust / The Chemical Brothers:A key record of the 1990s, Exit Planet Dust invented the big-beat style that dominated British dance music in the second half of the decade, and it still sounds superb in its own right. Skull-crunching hip-hop loops, fuzz guitar, insistently repetitive spoken samples and thunderous basslines make up the blueprint for one of the most instantly energising albums ever recorded. Many of the titles-"Chemical Beats", "Fuck Up Beats", "Chico's Groove"-are fairly self-explanatory. Others show a level of erudite humour; "Song To The Siren" filches the name of a Tim Buckley ballad for a track more in keeping with the mysteries of a car alarm, while "One Too Many Mornings" is nothing that Bob Dylan would recognise in a hurry. Collaborations with Beth Orton ("Alive Alone") and the Charlatans' Tim Burgess ("Life Is Sweet") add human voices to the brilliant mechanical formula. -David Bennun For years before the release of Exit Planet Dust, the production duo of Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons were cranking out slabs of the biggest sounds around on the U. K. label Junior Boys' Own. Before screeching guitars and massive breakdowns were par for the course in dance music, they were unleashing monsters like "Chemical Beats" and "Song to the Siren"; their distorted beats and rock mentality were years ahead of their time. And, not surprisingly, they still hold up today, collected and rereleased, along with several newer tracks, on Exit Planet Dust. [+]
All the singles that established the trademark Chemicals sound are present, as are explorations of pop-song forms with vocalists Beth Orton ("Alive Alone") and Tim Burgess ("Life Is Sweet"). While a more evolved sound can be heard on their follow-up, Dig Your Own Hole, the roots of big beat can be found here. -Matthew Corwine.

Review Come with Us / Chemical Brothers:If anyone's suffering from new-year blues, Come With Us will shake them out of their narcolepsy. This fantastic album roars out of the starting blocks like a supercharged dragster, blowing up a heady fume of hip-hop techno flavoured with the Chemical's new found post-rave happiness. Their fourth album shows all the passion of their earlier works coupled with a sophistication beyond the mere wish to knock people's musical heads off. Impressively after over six years of making music and touring they've lost none of their enthusiasm. In fact their longevity seems to inspire them to greater achievement in a field that traditionally feeds off the new, the novel and the young. Best of all, the Brothers have developed the ability to communicate heartfelt emotions, evident on tracks such as the Beth Orton sung "The State We're In", the Pink Floyd-like "Pioneer Skies" and magnificent album closer "The Test". That doesn't mean that there aren't the "traditional" Chemical Brothers' dancefloor killers. The opener and title track "Come With Us" is easily the pulsating equal of "Hey Boy Hey Girl" or 1995's "Block Rockin' Beats". Both already released singles, the bizarre "It Began in Afrika" and the Donna Summer-meets-Kraftwerk blur of "Star Guitar" are included in their original form. They're probably the album's weakest tracks. [+]
The Brothers have moved on, yet they're still as good as they were. Go with them. -Jake Barnes.

Review Southern Fried Records Presents Big Beach Boutique II / Various Artists:For a few hours one scorching July day, Brighton Beach became the venue for the Big Beach Boutique 2, one of the biggest parties the UK has ever seen. Thanks to the city's star resident, one Mr Cook, 250,000 revellers were able to forget a decade of shindig-stifling legislation and party for free while perfecting that great move, "the pebble shuffle". Predictably, a wave of negative press followed, but for anyone who was there, it was one of the most memorable events since the sun set on the Summer of Love. It's near impossible to bottle that kind of atmosphere, but Big Beach Boutique 2 is a good attempt to bring the sun to your speakers. While excerpts from support DJ sets such as Groove Armada's mid-pace "Superstylin" and the Lo Fidelity Allstars feisty "Tied to the Mast" create a carnival feel, its only when Cook kicks off with Tim Deluxe's "It Just Won't Do (dub)" that things really get going. Not the most eclectic mix album ever, the barrage of tech-house does become a little tiresome, and Mint Royale's "Sexiest Man in Jamaica" doesn't work so well off the beach. But, with superb moments such as Cook's magnificent mix of X Press 2's "Lazy", all told it's a great slice of nostalgia. -Christopher Barrett.

Review Let's Get Killed / David Holmes:When Danny DeVito commissioned Irish producer David Holmes to provide the score for the film Out of Sight, he chose wisely. Holmes's gritty, urban dance music, first exposed on the sadly underrated The Film's Crap Let's Slash the Seats, is perfect for evoking scenes and atmospheres, yet it's interesting enough to stand on its own. For this album, Holmes and a friend wandered the streets of New York, collecting voices and noises; Holmes then assembled them into an imaginary soundtrack with the structures of modern dance music and the sonic qualities of rock and dub reggae. Let's Get Killed is a disjointed cut-up session that brings the grit and excitement of city life into your living room without leaving a drop of blood. -Matthew Corwine.

Review You've Come a Long Way Baby / Fatboy Slim:Biographers of Norman Cook should look no further than the title of this-his second album under the pseudonym Fatboy Slim. From humble beginnings as the bass player in prole rock band The Housemartins, through chart-topping fame with Beats International, and even a spell scraping a meagre living from writing computer game soundtracks in the early 90s, Norman Cook has done it all. You've Come A Long Way, Baby, though, is the Fatboy's culmination; the quintessential, and utterly essential big-beat album. "The Rockafeller Skank" is a manic collage of surf-guitar looped into ever-tightening spirals; utterly simplistic, but a work of devilish genius. "Gangster Tripping" and "Fucking In Heaven" are in a similar celebratory mood, but to prove that the Fatboy doesn't always work by a formula, try the purloined gospel of "Praise You", or the rave nostalgia of "Acid 8000". It's seldom poetry, but dumb dance music doesn't get much better. -Louis Pattison.

Review Surrender / The Chemical Brothers:The Chemical Brothers released their third album with their status as one of the UK's most exciting bands unassailable. Surrender, managed to enhance their already burgeoning reputation, drawing on the talents of a formidable array of celebrity collaborators including Missy Elliott, Oasis' Noel Gallagher and Bernard Sumner. The Brothers shifted their attention away from hip-hop breaks towards more traditional 4/4 beats, but their unique blend of visceral energy, inventive melodies and eclectic samples remained unaffected. "Out Of Control", featuring the fragile vocals of Sumner, sounds like New Order on stronger drugs, before erupting into a groovy, guitar-studded monster not dissimilar to many of Underworld's offerings. The fairytale chords and Oriental chimes of "Sunshine Underground" provide a refreshing change in direction, while Mercury Rev's Jonathan Donahue makes a refreshing appearance on the psychedelic rock finale, "Dream On". Surrender is a deeply satisfying album from a band who grow from strength to strength. -Ed Potton.

Review Electro Glide in Blue / Apollo 440:Unfairly dismissed by much of the electronica cognoscenti-too commercial, some sniffed: too calculated-this was, nevertheless, an ambitious (and mostly satisfying) attempt to fuse the volume and density of rock with the broad textural vocabulary of electronica. The single, "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Dub," effectively defined the template, marrying a corrosive Van Halen guitar sample to chattering breakbeats; the remainder of the album was divided between variations on this theme (the slide guitar propelling "Altamont Super-Highway Revisited," the bluesy shuffle of "Tears Of The Gods"), and moments of almost meditative stillness, courtesy of the group's other incarnation, the Stealth Sonic Orchestra. The most accomplished of the latter is a ballad titled "Pain In Any Language," which features the last recorded vocal of late Associates frontman Billy MacKenzie, to whose memory this bold and singular album is dedicated. -Andrew McGuire.

Review Singles 1993-2003 / Chemical Brothers:To remain relevant after a decade in the music industry is rare indeed; for a dance act, it's virtually unique. Singles 93-03 ably demonstrates how the Chemical Brothers have managed it. Having first carved a reputation as DJs the Dust Brothers in the early 1990s, the two home-counties history graduates narrowly avoided calling themselves the London Dust Explosion before spearheading big beat, becoming a huge live draw, collaborating with Noel Gallagher and having Glastonbury Festival founder Michael Eavis play "Hey Boy, Hey Girl" at his wedding. It's been 10 years of fun, frolics and gigantean left-field beats for Ed Simmons and Tom Rowland and, as this faultless singles collection testifies, continual reinvention. From the seething siren, pounding breaks, breathy vocals and spellbinding post-acid electronica of album opener "Song to the Siren" to the ingenious collaboration with the Flaming Lips, "The Golden Path", Tom 'n' Ed have somehow managed to carve tracks that appeal equally to radio, clubs and the live arena. Alongside the cement-cracking bass of "Leave Home" and "Block Rockin' Beats" comes the high-inducing sonic debauchery of "The Private Psychedelic Reel" and dancefloor filler "Star Guitar", to name but a few of the many highlights. Ingenious, boundary-baffling stuff, this compilation offers a hypnotic historical tour of one of the most creative careers in dance music. -Christopher Barrett.

Review Scorpio Rising / Death In Vegas:Scorpio Rising follows the same approach as Death in Vegas' remarkable predecessor, The Contino Sessions. Richard Fearless and Tim Holmes corral a host of special guests to populate their barbed soundscapes and their knack for finding the perfect environment to bring out the best in their chosen guest is as sure as ever. Liam Gallagher excels himself on the title track, inspired by cult filmmaker Kenneth Anger's celebrated movie, Paul Weller brings just the right measure of disdain to a simmering version of Gene Clark's "So You Say You Lost Your Baby", while Hope Sandoval's sultry tones bring a sensual glow to the storming finale "Help Yourself". Throughout, Indian violinist Doctor Subramanian helps flesh out the eclectic but perfectly tailored backing tracks. Fearless and Holmes display the sort of insight that would be the envy of any record company A&R department. -Gavin Martin.
