Review Family / LeAnn Rimes:

Family sounds like a pivotal release for Rimes, who made her breakthrough as a childhood prodigy with an uncanny vocal resemblance to Patsy Cline, and then evolved into an eclectic diva who couldn't quite decide what she wanted to be when she grew up. She's all grown up now, as both the sensual "Upper Hand" and the spiritual "What I Cannot Change" attest. Rimes had a hand in writing all the material (except for the bonus-cut duets with Jon Bon Jovi and Reba McEntire), and themes of family-though not always her family-pervade the lyrics. Musically, this is grittier, harder-edged, and more propulsive than much of her previous fare, with the title cut and "Nothin' Better to Do" evoking the Southern country soul of Bobbie Gentry, her duet with Marc Broussard on "Nothing Wrong" riffing like the Rolling Stones, and "One Day Too Long" sounding like the female Otis Redding. She's lost none of her supple upper register, as the balladry of "Pretty Things" attests, but Leann Rimes in no longer just a pretty voice. -Don McLeese.

Review Trio Vol.1 / Emmylou Harris:

"Appalachia circa 1907" is the way they described it after release. It wasn't, of course, but it was as close as you could come in 1987 and still hope to sell the million copies that this ended up selling. The "Three Tenors" of country music juggle leads, complement each other to often haunting effect and subjugate their egos to a greater cause. The songs run the gamut from primordial country favourites like "Rosewood Casket" and "Hobo's Meditation", to 1950s pop (a rather anomalous "To Know Him Is To Love Him") and mainstream country. The instrumentation is restrained, the vocals are unfailingly lovely and the result is a trio that is more than the sum of its parts. -Colin Escott.

Review Greatest Hits / Martina McBride:

In the abstract, there are two Martina McBrides heard in this ample Greatest Hits collection, which features 14 songs from the Kansas-born singer's studio albums, along with four inspired new cuts. At one extreme, there's the demure cover-girl-pretty warbler who serves up fervent and endearing love pledges such as "Wild Angels", "Safe in the Arms of Love" and "I Love You". Then, there's the mature, poised, socially conscious mother of two who grapples with darker topics such as poverty and inequality ("Love's the Only House") and child and spousal abuse (the wrathful "Independence Day" and the ineffably sad "Concrete Angel"). There are certainly impressive samples of both Martinas on this anthology. On other cuts-the bluesy, naughty new track "When God-Fearin' Women Get The Blues" and the angry "Life #9", for instance-the forces of light and darkness, anger and felicity, commingle in a manner that's no less intriguing and provocative. -Bob Allen.

Review Fumbling Towards Ecstasy / Sarah McLachlan:

On the other side of the Atlantic, pre-Lilith Fair, McLachlan had critical acclaim and a cult following but was otherwise just another hard-working female singer/songwriter-one who wasn't blasting down doors with overt sexuality or popping along in front of a male Svengali. Similar in their emotional urgency to her more recent work but delightfully less polished, these folk-rock songs are surprising gems. If not for McLachlan's poignant vocals, lyrics like "Your love is better than ice cream" (on "Ice Cream") would sound childishly absurd (especially alongside deeper material like "Hold On"), but here they're given just as much respect as the weightier issues she explores. A great album to accompany your moments of introspection. -Rebecca Wallwork.

Review Demolition / Ryan Adams:

Demolition is a sort of "best of" compilation comprising 13 previously unreleased demos by Ryan Adams. Recorded at four different studio sessions in Nashville, Los Angeles and Stockholm, with a cast of musicians that includes his road band the Pinkhearts, Gillian Welch, David Rawlings, Ethan Johns, Chris Stills, Bucky Baxter and Greg Leisz, Demolition proves that Adams is still a work-in-progress: brilliant one moment, sloppy the next. When he's good, he's very good: the rousing country-rocker "Hallelujah", the brooding acoustic ballads "Dear Chicago" and "Tomorrow", and the jangly power-pop number "Gimme a Sign" are as fine as anything on Gold. But Adams sometimes lapses into mimicry, as he does on "Nuclear" and "Starting to Hurt", both of which could be outtakes from a U2 album. "Tennessee Sucks", a chronicle of a boredom-filled summer day in Nashville, sounds half-baked, while the closing track, "Jesus (Don't Touch My Baby)", which finds Adams (on synthesizer, guitars, bass and drum machine) droning on like Leonard Cohen, falls in the "failed experiment" category. Despite its bright spots, Demolition ultimately comes off as a mixed bag. -David Hill.
