Review Singing in the Bathtub / Robert Crumb:In the late 1970s the Cheap Suit Serenaders-fronted by comics legend Robert C Crumb but also featuring fellow old-time music artistes Robert Armstrong, B Bob Brozman, Al Dodge, Tom Marion and Terry Zwigoff (who would later produce a whole film on Crumb)-were the only group around who would even think about still producing 78s. After all, that's where all their favourite music came from. Those platters are now highly collectible, but their albums live on, reissued on CD. Singing in the Bathtub collects some of their best work-humorous originals such as "Suits Crybaby Blues" and plenty of covers of tunes from obscure 78s. Their playing is flawless (you probably haven't heard the steel guitar, banjo mandolin, or musical saw played with such virtuosity as here), the tunes are mostly fun and spirited, and the music styles are varied. In the hands of the Cheap Suits, old-time music is alive and well. -Jason Verlinde.

Review The Hardest Part / Allison Moorer:With her second album, The Hardest Part, Allison Moorer-the younger sister of Shelby Lynne-finds herself in a rather precarious position. After the critical acclaim of her first album, Alabama Song, Moorer was perched between widespread critical acclaim for her traditional country influences, and mainstream acceptance for her New Country sensibilities. On The Hardest Part, it appears that Moorer found this position difficult to maintain, because she's steered her sound towards a cleaner, pop sheen. That's not to say that she's gone completely down the Shania Twain route, though. The Hardest Part is a fine New Country album, proving that it is possible to remain true to the Nashville of the past, while still appealing to the Nashville of the present. The superb, bluegrass-tinged title track features mandolin, banjo and fiddle; "Think It Over" is a proper country rocker in the old "man-doing-me-wrong" style; while "Is it Worth It" is a down-tempo wonder of resigned acceptance. The Hardest Part may sound pretty and polished, but that doesn't mean that Allison Moorer has lost her edge. -Robert Burrow.

Review No Fences / Garth Brooks:No Fences captures Garth Brooks just after his initial success yet before superstardom. Though it includes "The Thunder Rolls", another of the pop country power ballads he'd introduced with "The Dance", No Fences bounces mainly between impersonations-often catchy and engaging ones, but impersonations nonetheless. "Wild Horses" is straight-up George Strait, while "Two of A Kind" and "Friends in Low Places" are John Anderson and Hank Jr. respectively. The best moment, the Dan Fogleberg-like "Unanswered Prayers", relays a message either highly spiritual or a hugely rationalized. Regardless, it succeeds because its delivery is earnest, sweet and humble-something Garth wouldn't be for long. -David Cantwell.

Review Copperhead Road / Steve Earle:It happens to every hardened party goer-your lifestyle eventually catches up to you. For Steve Earle, this third effort from the then-roué-ish troubadour was a pretty glaring rehab-ahead warning light. The sloppiness was beginning to show: half the disc bogs down in throwaways, cheap echoes of Guitar Town's country-rock acumen. The rest, fortunately, is prime, focused Earle: the Vietnam-vet title track, the Wild West-themed "Snake Oil", the rousing "Johnny Come Lately" which features backing from the Pogues and the oft-covered classic "The Devil's Right Hand", in which the composer achieves that perfect balance of city-slick pop and hillbilly twang. Earle would hit that one-two combo again, but not until he shook that party monkey a few albums later. -Tom Lanham.
