Review I'm Alright [Us Import] / Jo Dee Messina:JoDee Messina's 1996 song, "Heads Carolina, Tails California", was a likeable, upbeat slice of country music that promised, at the least, more such work. Her sophomore album, I'm Alright, however, shows that whatever edges Messina once owned to have been sanded off by the Nashville production machine. The we-can-work-it-out tone of "Heads Carolina" here becomes little more than feel-good, plucky hackwork. At the album's worst, when confronted with tragedy day after day in newspaper headlines, all Messina can do is throw up her hands and lament that "Even God Must Get the Blues". -Rickey Wright.

Review Dancin' With Them That Brung Me / Stacey Earle:Stacey Earle made her recorded debut singing the duet "Promise You Anything" on her more celebrated brother Steve's 1990 album The Hard Way, so it's appropriate that she uses a sparkling mandolin-powered version of the same song to open this album. After that, though, Stacey stands on her own two feet with 11 of her own songs, always exploring the deeper recesses of human emotions, her sharply observed lyrics and free-wheeling melodies benefiting from unfussy, tasty musical arrangements that prominently feature Mark Stuart's big, shiny acoustic guitar lines. An idiosyncratic performer, she lacks her brother's sure touch with a killer hook, preferring to let her lyrics dictate the shape of her tunes. Occasionally, her diction is less than clear: she can sometimes slip into a cutesy little girl voice but, for many, those affectations will probably rank high among her most appealing characteristics. When it all comes together though, listening to Dancin' With Them That Brung Me can be an unalloyed delight. And it certainly does come together on "Kiss Her Goodnight", where Sheryl Crow makes deliciously apt contributions on piano, harmonium and backing vocals, and on the lilting slow-waltz of the title track, a song so shamelessly pretty and innocent that it might have been written by that little girl she sometimes pretends to be. -Johnny Black.
