Review See the Morning in / Grand Drive:There's something very traditional about See the Morning In. Danny and Julian Wilson, twin singers and songwriters of Grand Drive, seem to take their lead almost exclusively from Gram Parsons, eschewing any kind of wildness in their search for the perfect bitter-sweet song. With their two previous albums, Road Music and True Love & High Adventure, they certainly achieved tremendous levels of bittersweetness, but failed to deliver tunes to grip the heart and seize the imagination. See the Morning In brings them that little bit closer. Produced by Jim Cregan (the man responsible for the famous solo in Cockney Rebel's "Make Me Smile"), it's again very soft and remorselessly tasteful. But now, as with the backwoods rock of "Needle in the Groove" and the honky-tonk screech of "Life Is a Car", serious efforts are made to inject musical excitement. Better still, the songwriting's improved. The doomed love-song "You and I" is genuinely moving, while "Track 40", both nostalgic and painfully realistic, is quite beautiful. So, it's a step forward on all fronts, and hopefully a step that will lend Grand Drive enough confidence to add spikiness and drama to their highly evolved sense of romance. -Dominic Wills.

Review The Three Pickers / Three Pickers:The Three Pickers brings together bluegrass legends Earl Scruggs, Doc Watson and Ricky Skaggs for the first time, capturing performances at a North Carolina concert for PBS's Great Performances series. It was a celebratory occasion, and this live session, supersaturated with hot licks and down-home warmth, successfully transmits the excitement of the event. For all the assembled instrumental expertise, it is the traditional vocals-with Skaggs leading the way-that make the music work. The trio opens with the lively "Feast Here Tonight", featuring scintillating sounds from Skaggs's mandolin, Scruggs's banjo and Watson's guitar, before taking on the high, lonesome gospel of "What Would You Give in Exchange for Your Soul". Each member of the trio gets feature spots for his individual band, in addition to the dozen or so songs on which the three combine forces. Watson is joined by grandson Richard for a couple of country blues tunes before Scruggs, reinforced by his family and friends, takes over for two songs, showcasing his seminal banjo technique on "Earl's Breakdown". Review Down Every Road 1962-1994 / Merle Haggard:For a long time, Merle Haggard has been best known for his least-important music-"Okie from Muskogee" and its sequels, "The Fighting Side of Me" and "Are the Good Times Really Over". All three of these patriotic novelty songs are included on this four-CD box set, but they are dwarfed by the riches around them. Songs such as "Running Kind", "If We Make it Through December" and "I Started Loving You Again" eschew sloganeering to draw powerful portraits of working-class folks pulled in one direction by a longing for footloose freedom and in another by economic realities and emotional ties. The catchy directness, the poetic vernacular and Haggard's baritone purr mark those numbers as examples of country music at its finest.
