Review Lonely Runs Both Ways / Alison Krauss:Nobody makes sombre sound more exquisite than Alison Krauss. She's come an awfully long way from her days as a teenage fiddle prodigy, as her glamour gown on this CD's cover suggests and the bittersweet maturity of the music confirms. Krauss exchanges her bluegrass fiddle for the chamber strains of viola on much of the material, including four songs by Robert Lee Castleman (whose "The Lucky One," "Let Me Touch You for Awhile," and "Forget About It" were previously popularized by Krauss). Castleman's compositions showcase the emotional intimacy and interpretive subtlety of her breathy trill. The yearning harmonies on "Wouldn't Be So Bad" (written by Gillian Welch and David Rawlings) and "Borderline" (written by Sidney and Suzanne Cox) reinforce the album's restless spirit of quiet desperation. Change-of-pace contributions by Krauss's bandmates are more deeply rooted in the bluegrass/folk tradition, with Dan Tyminski renewing Del McCoury's "Rain Please Go Away" and Woody Guthrie's populist anthem "Pastures of Plenty"; Dobro master Jerry Douglas leads the charge on his instrumental "Unionhouse Branch. " Few bands in bluegrass can match the virtuosity of Union Station's interplay, but the artistry of Alison Krauss transcends genre. -Don McLeese.

Review All Time Greatest Hits / Roy Orbison:It's a measure of Roy Orbison's classics that even some of the uptempo songs that break up the dominant ballad mood of this 20-song collection are themselves fairly melancholic. Rarely does Orbison allow himself the outright celebration of something like "Mean Woman Blues", more often going for the shades of grey that slip into "Blue Angel" and "Leah". Few could do what he achieves on these singles, and not just because few are gifted with such a voice. The biggest achievement of all may be Orbison's ability to make a devastated cry like "Only the Lonely" sound somehow peaceful. -Rickey Wright.

Review The Definitive Everly Brothers (2CD) / Everly Brothers:From the first keening harmonies of `Cathy's Clown' through to `Baby What You Want Me To Do', this Everly Brothers' compilation may not cover new ground, but as a document of the brothers' country leanings, it's a fine album. The early hits like `Wake Up Little Susie' may be absent, but more room is provided for lesser known fare like `Bowling Green' or Roger Miller's `Burma Shave'. That isn't to say that there's no hits on here; the band's definitive reading of the title track is a certain highlight and puts nearly every other rendition in the shadows; the brotherly harmonies and proto-country rock backing showing their obvious influence on some of the Byrds, especially the solo work of Gene Clark and Gram Parsons, to name but two. And some of these singles are truly some of the greatest ever committed to tape- `Cathy's Clown' for example, is a true slice of power pop that matches Phil Spector for intensity and heartbreak, while `Gone Gone Gone' is likely the definitive country-rock song. This CD promises to be the first volume of an Everly's collection, and there's plenty more to be shown, but even on its'own, this is a fine introduction. - Thom Allott.

Review Rumor and Sigh / Richard Thompson:Widely acknowledged as one of the very best of his 20 or so post- Fairport Convention albums, Rumor & Sigh is a challenging-and sometimes rambling-affair, with Thompson juxtaposing rock against folk as well as going off on blues and polka excursions. The settings, too, reflect the urban and the rural, and the subject matter ranges from homicidal tendencies in the rocking classic of "I Feel So Good", through the jokey tribute to the old Scottish bandleader in "Don't Sit On My Jimmy Shand" and to love lost in the extremely moving "I Misunderstood". -Tim Perry.

Review At Folsom Prison / Johnny Cash:Johnny Cash had been breaking new ground for a decade when At Folsom Prison suddenly made the world at large take notice. The interaction of a volatile prison population starved for entertainment and a desperately on-form Johnny Cash was electrifying. His sombre machismo finally found a home. The songs, which included every prison song Cash knew ("I Got Stripes", "The Wall", "25 Minutes to Go", "Cocaine Blues", plus his own "Folsom Prison Blues") were tailored to galvanise the crowd. This set is all about atmosphere. Live at the Grand Ole Opry this is not. The 1999 version drops the San Quentin portion of the original CD reissue, instead adding three cuts to complete the full and uncensored Folsom show. -Colin Escott.

Review Southern Rock Opera / Drive-By Truckers:You don't need a bottle of Jack or even a trace of Southern lineage to appreciate the genius of Drive-By Truckers' Southern Rock Opera. Without a hint of irony, the Athens, Georgia, quintet creates a fast-driving, hard-living tribute to the indelible music and legacy of Lynyrd Skynyrd. Like any good concept album, there's a modicum of plot and a theme to these 20 songs (loosely based around the rise and fall of fictitious Southern rock band Betamax Guillotine), but the best tracks make you forget the story line altogether: "Birmingham", "Zip City" and "Let There Be Rock". The "opera" aspects bog things down a bit-you probably only need to hear the spoken-word track "The Three Great Alabama Icons" once-but the overall concept still comes off without a hitch. The lyrics are great, the trio of electric guitars is blessed with raw production, and the tunes-though lacking the pop sensibility of, say, "Gimme Three Steps"-will have you cranking up the album for your friends. And, after a few spins of Southern Rock Opera, you might even find yourself digging out those old Skynyrd LPs to hear the real thing again. -Jason Verlinde.

Review There You'll Be: The Very Best Of Faith Hill / Faith Hill:After immeasurable success in the US, Faith Hill finally comes to Europe and There You'll Be is a sort of catch-up for the best bits we may have missed along the way (or in other words, a greatest hits collection for the un-initiated). A dozen songs which map the path of the Georgia singer, it includes the massive hit for which she has come to be known over here, "There You'll Be" from the Pearl Harbor soundtrack together with some pop anthems like "The Way You Love Me (Love to Infinity Mix)". However, the style she delivers most convincingly is that of her roots in country with "Let Me Let Go", "Piece of my Heart" and "You Give me Love" from the earlier albums being the clear highlights of this collection. -Gunther Matejka.
