Review The Man from God Knows Where / Tom Russell:

Texan singer/songwriter Tom Russell has recorded more than a dozen albums of original material, but none quite as unique as this evocative "immigrant song cycle," which paints a stark picture of early American lifestyles. Loosely based on Russell's own family history, this folk opera employs Irish and Norwegian musical elements as well as sounds drawn straight from the dustbowl. Sterling vocal contributions from the likes of Iris DeMent and Dave Van Ronk guide us through several generations of outcasts and pioneers. Using a wide range of traditional instruments, including Uilleann pipes and the Hardanger fiddle, Russell creates a rustic vision of hard-luck America that is both a coherent artistic statement as well as an extremely powerful history lesson. -Mitch Myers.

Review 1000 Kisses / Patty Griffin:

After a four-year wait, 1000 Kisses is more than reason to celebrate Patty Griffin's return-it's a guileless, glowing masterpiece. Since the breathtaking purity of her debut, Living with Ghosts, Griffin has proven she can luxuriate in glamorous pop, rock like a biker, hold her own on stage with the Dixie Chicks and write hit songs and singer-songwriter classics. What she hadn't done is craft an album as wholly exquisite and emotional as her talent. With the spare, acoustic 1000 Kisses, she has done just that. In the basement of longtime guitarist Doug Lancio's Nashville home, Griffin takes a suite of intensely personal songs (and three covers, including a tingling version of Bruce Springsteen's "Stolen Car") into the close confidence of her airy but twang-shaded voice, and draws accordion, cello, mandolin, brushed drums and even Emmylou Harris into a candid and rare musical space. -Roy Kasten.

Review Hand of Kindness / Richard Thompson:

Singer, songwriter, and guitarist Richard Thompson and then-wife Linda had achieved a cruel victory with their final album together, Shoot Out the Lights, a riveting classic drawing much of its power from frank allusions to their disintegrating marriage. The preoccupation with the Thompsons' personal history may explain why, at the time, fans scrutinized the first Thompson solo album after the breakup (1983's Hand of Darkness) for fresh wounds. Fans missed a more fundamental issue-the de facto reunion of Thompson's first band, Fairport Convention, with Fairport's original producer Joe Boyd at the controls. Only violinist Dave Swarbrick is missing, with Simon Nicol, Dave Peggs and Dave Mattacks all present and accounted for, augmented by twin saxes, John Kirkpatrick's always-evocative accordion, and Clive Gregson's, John Hiatt's and Bobby King's vocals. Hardly surprising that this set should hold up so well, or that its nine solid Thompson originals should be so fully realized. -Sam Sutherland.

Review Grand Tour, the/Alone Again / George Jones:

Nobody has ever sung heartbreak so well as George Jones, and George Jones never had a better reason to sing heartbreak as he did when he recorded these albums in the mid-70s. His turbulent marriage to Tammy Wynette was collapsing, and his well-chronicled difficulties with a variety of substances were tightening their grip on him. It is a cruel irony that these circumstances, largely created by Jones's rarified instinct for self-destruction, seemed necessary to inspire Jones to do his best, but some singers only ever approach the heights via the depths. These albums find Jones chronicling the demise of his marriage to Wynette in unsparing detail. The title track of "The Grand Tour" is a wretched, bereft, room-by-room ramble through the house she's just left, while songs such as "She Needs Me" and "She Told Me So" are Jones doing what he always did best-articulating the deluded self-pity of a man struggling with the truth that he has nobody to blame but himself. "A Drunk Can't Be A Man" and "Stand on My Own Two Knees", meanwhile, at least seem to acknowledge that it's high time he pulled himself together. Great songs, impeccably sung, examining the failure of human relationships with feeling and no little wit: between them, these albums are Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf? with a pedal steel. -Andrew Mueller.

Review Aw C'mon/No You C'mon / Lambchop:

Aw C'Mon / No You C'Mon, the latest in Lambchop's long and meaty lineage, could loosely be described as a double-concept LP. Originally conceived when vocalist Kurt Wagner decided to write a song a day for a few months, it was then stretched further when the band was asked to write a soundtrack for a 1927 silent movie. The end result is a double LP that, consciously or not, adequately captures the diverse nature of this endlessly creative group. Wagner's distinctive voice is a constant (as are his lyrics, which range joyously from the sentimental to the sarcastic) but the background sounds are a constantly shifting tapestry, all rich strings and insouciant strums one minute, brooding melodies and sinister moods the next. If there's any band out there that seem to live for their work it's Lambchop. And while they don't necessarily get better with every album, they do retain a certain freshness and sense of innovation, traits that many of their peers could do with adopting. -Paul Sullivan.

Review Beyond Nashville: the Twisted Heart of Country Music / Various Artists:

Nashville is the centre of the country music industry, but the driving roots of "real" country extend far beyond its boundaries, from Memphis and San Antonio to NYC. Beyond Nashville, an exploration of this "real" country music, features copious sleeve notes and tracks by key artists from the hillbilly 1920s to the present. There are rich pickings: from the bluesy yodelling of consumptive pre-war star Jimmie Rodgers, to Woody Guthrie's fiery harmonica and social realism (forefather of Bob Dylan), to Carl Perkins' joint-jumpin' rock & roll take on country. Also here are 1970s groundbreakers such as Gram Parsons, Emmylou Harris and the Flying Burrito Brothers-who fused country with rock-and current young turks such as Alejandro Escovedo and Jim White who play a cowpunk groove. In fact, this 42-track double CD has too many artists to mention, making this a highly recommended sterling collection. -Lucy O'Brien.
