Review Personal File / Johnny Cash:The recordings Johnny Cash started making for Rick Rubin's American label in 1993 launched a journey through the Great American Songbook-from traditional tunes to alt-rock-that continued until, literally, the end of his life. What wasn't known at the time was that Cash had anticipated the American Recordings concept 20 years earlier. A series of informal private sessions he recorded in 1973 featuring just voice and guitar-with a few numbers added between then and 1982-were left untouched at his House of Cash studio, unearthed only after his death in 2003. These 49 songs, labeled "Personal File," show him exploring 19th-century parlor tunes, Tin Pan Alley pop, gospel, little-known Cash originals, classic and contemporary country, and even a recitation of Robert Service's poem "The Cremation of Sam McGee. " On many, his spoken introductions reveal personal ties to a given number. Cash reprises early country fare like Jimmie Rodgers's "My Mother Was a Lady" and "The Letter Edged in Black. " He also revisits later country classics like the Louvin Brothers' "When I Stop Dreaming," close friend Johnny Horton's hit "When It's Springtime in Alaska (It's Forty Below)," John Prine's "Paradise," and stepdaughter Carlene Carter's "It Takes One to Know Me. " The second disc is a virtual hymnbook, blending traditional gospel and A. P. Carter tunes with a sacred composition by Rodney Crowell and Cash gospel originals. [+]
For those enchanted by the illness-ravaged soulfulness of Cash's later American recordings, hearing him in his prime is not only breathtaking-it underscores the depth of his still-remarkable musical vision. -Rich Kienzle.

Review Cry / Faith Hill:With her big voice and soaring melodies, Faith Hill is seen in the UK as a cross between Celine Dion and Shania Twain. But musically speaking (and based upon the evidence on Cry), she's far more intriguing than either. Though often concentrating on power ballads (the title track here is another storming example), this Nashville resident has managed to combine country, rock, pop and contemporary R&B into an eminently consumable package. Cry sees Hill move into Twain territory, or rather that of Twain's husband and producer Mutt Lange. With the songs such as "One", "If This Is the End" and "I Think I Will", she employs the sweeping guitars and massive melodrama of prime-time Foreigner (one of Lange's earlier successes). In fact, she even ups the ante with her superb backing vocals, "Back to You" in particular possessing an overlapping series of brilliant melodies. There are let-downs: "Beautiful" has Faith spilling spoken-word goo over a Clapton-style guitar solo, "Unsaveable" and "Baby You Belong" are rock throwaways, and "This Is Me" features the fabulously ignorant line "I'm just like everybody else / I try to love Jesus and myself. " But all in all this very well produced album is as good as today's mainstream gets. -Dominic Wills.

Review Grand Tour, the/Alone Again / George Jones:Nobody has ever sung heartbreak so well as George Jones, and George Jones never had a better reason to sing heartbreak as he did when he recorded these albums in the mid-70s. His turbulent marriage to Tammy Wynette was collapsing, and his well-chronicled difficulties with a variety of substances were tightening their grip on him. It is a cruel irony that these circumstances, largely created by Jones's rarified instinct for self-destruction, seemed necessary to inspire Jones to do his best, but some singers only ever approach the heights via the depths. These albums find Jones chronicling the demise of his marriage to Wynette in unsparing detail. The title track of "The Grand Tour" is a wretched, bereft, room-by-room ramble through the house she's just left, while songs such as "She Needs Me" and "She Told Me So" are Jones doing what he always did best-articulating the deluded self-pity of a man struggling with the truth that he has nobody to blame but himself. "A Drunk Can't Be A Man" and "Stand on My Own Two Knees", meanwhile, at least seem to acknowledge that it's high time he pulled himself together. Great songs, impeccably sung, examining the failure of human relationships with feeling and no little wit: between them, these albums are Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf? with a pedal steel. -Andrew Mueller.

Review The Woman In Me / Shania Twain:Shania Twain comes full circle on The Woman In Me, co-writing 11 out of 12 songs [the others are remixes and a CD-ROM video] and proving that she can do more than sing. Once again she crosses over into pop/rock territory with this multi-platinum affair, bringing legions of new fans into the country camp. Peppered with hits such as "Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under?" and "Any Man of Mine", this album features crisp and clear vocals and country-flavored pop arrangements. Husband and co-writer "Mutt" Lange, known for his production work with hard hitters Def Leppard, has produced a fresh sound for country, enhancing the traditional with a more gritty, gutsy sound; even the more delicate tunes resemble those power-pop tunes from the 1980s. Woman in Me is music for all occasions: danceable, romantic and powerful. -Paula Ghergia.

Review The Man Comes Around: American IV / Johnny Cash:On first thought, the idea of the Man in Black recording such covers as "Bridge over Troubled Water", "Danny Boy" and "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" might seem odd, even for an artist who's been able to put his personal stamp on just about everything. But The Man Comes Around, which also draws on Cash's original songs as well as those by Nine Inch Nails ("Hurt"), Sting ("I Hung My Head") and Depeche Mode ("Personal Jesus"), may be one of the most autobiographical albums of the 70-year-old singer-songwriter's career. Nearly every tune seems chosen to afford the ailing giant of popular music a chance to reflect on his life, and look ahead to what's around the corner. From the opening track-Cash's own "The Man Comes Around", filled with frightening images of Armageddon-the album, produced by Rick Rubin, advances a quiet power and pathos, built around spare arrangements and unflinching honesty in performance and subject. In 15 songs, Cash moves through dark, haunted meditations on death and destruction, poignant farewells, testaments to everlasting love, and hopeful salutes to redemption. He sounds as if he means every word, his baritone-bass, frequently frayed and ravaged, taking on a weary beauty. By the time he gets to the Beatles' "In My Life", you'll very nearly cry. Go ahead. He sounds as if he's about to, too. -Alanna Nash.

Review Soul Journey / Gillian Welch:Blessed with a soulful and expressive voice and an innate grasp of the melodies and themes of traditional country music, Gillian Welch has made three beautiful and often brilliant albums. Yet one can make the case that she's still searching for her own true artistic voice. Soul Journey brings her ever closer to that elusive goal. After 2001's austere, solemn and at times inscrutable Time (The Revelator), this follow-up finds Welch showing more warmth, ease and openness as both singer and songwriter. As the title portends, the concept of travel (physical and emotional) is a prevailing thread through these 10 tracks; she sings of rolling stones "on the road to sin", travellers on "black highways", girls "running around with the ragtop down" and "at the station rolling slow". These characters, perhaps autobiographical, are simultaneously searching for and running away from their pasts, while soft drums, fiddles, organs and Dobros add a welcome bit of lightness. With the trusty David Rawlings again at Welch's side, the songwriting and production till the earth between their old-time heroes and more modern troubadours like Townes Van Zandt and Neil Young (both the bucolic strummer and, on the closing "Wrecking Ball", the ragged electric wanderer). For Welch and for us, Soul Journey is yet another fascinating rest stop on the never-ending road to self-discovery. -Marc Greilsamer.
