Review In Session / Albert King:Recorded for a television programme of the same name back in 1983, In Session bills itself as the only known recording of Stevie Ray Vaughan and Albert King, who was Vaughan's idol and mentor, playing together. That leads to some heavy expectations, which fortunately aren't disappointed, at least if you aren't expecting the customary over-the-top performances Vaughan was famous for. His playing here is much more laid-back and controlled, which is actually a recommendation-the stylistic similarities between teacher and student are that much more pronounced. The songs are mostly King concert staples, with the exception of "Pride and Joy"; highlights include the T-Bone Walker classic "Call It Stormy Monday" and one of King's own, "Overall Junction", which features some excellent guitar solo work. The snippets of recorded conversation between songs are interesting curiosities as well. -Genevieve Williams.

Review Live at the Greek / Jimmy Page & The Black Crowes:Recorded in October 1999, this double-disc slab will certainly stick to your ribs, chock-full as it is of burly, brawny riffs and it is as flavourful as it is filling. Without question, the pairing of Jimmy Page and the Black Crowes sounds as strong on your player as it does on paper. Page's playing is more focused and incisive than it has been of late, the Crowes sound energized and inspired by the esteemed guest and Chris Robinson makes a fine Robert Plant. The Led Zeppelin covers, which account for 14 of the 20 tracks on Live At The Greek, stay close to the original arrangements-you can sing along most of the way based on your knowledge of the Zep studio albums. At first, this may seem disappointing, but it becomes clear very quickly that this method is preferable to any heavy-handed reworkings. And they smartly include a few lesser-known tracks as well ("Sick Again" and "Ten Years Gone" from Physical Graffiti and "Out On The Tiles" from III). The real payoff, however, comes with the half-dozen blues covers, which sound looser and more alive than the Zep tunes. This set isn't innovative, surprising or adventurous, but that's precisely where its charms lie. -Marc Greilsamer.
Tracks Frivolous Lola [1998]

Publisher: Arrow Films Release date: 2001-06-25 Run time: 90 min. RRP: £15.99 Price: £3.99
Review Frivolous Lola [1998] / Arrow Films:Frivolous Lola is a spirited adult production that keeps very much to Italian director Tinto Brass' modus operandi of making light-hearted sex films with a European art house sensibility. The Lola of the title (played with gusto by Serena Grandi) is a flighty young woman, frustrated by her relationship with local baker's son Masetto. Her constant attempts to seduce him meet with little success, resulting in a passionate affair with her mother's lover, André. As with all of Brass' work, Frivolous Lola is an odd combination of European erotica and Carry On film-not helped by the clumsy English language dubbing and the somewhat bizarre appearance of Britain's own Patrick Mower. Aficionados of the director will also spot his primary fascination with a certain part of the female anatomy as Grandi's bottom dominates the shot at every possible opportunity. On the DVD: Frivolous Lola on disc is digitally remastered, and the picture shows off the lushness of the Italian countryside, even though that was probably the last thing on the director's mind. Extras include an erotic photogallery and an interview with Tinto Brass himself, which does nothing to divert from the image of this man as something of an enigma in his chosen field. -Phil Udell.

Review 24 Nights: Eric Clapton Live / Eric Clapton:As revered elder rock statesman Clapton has edged towards the pop mainstream, his superlative guitar work has become increasingly less prominent on his albums. So, it's nice to have a solid showcase for his instrumental brilliance on the live 2-CD 24 Nights, which captures the highlights of an extended 1990-1991 run at London's Royal Albert Hall. The album finds Clapton performing Cream classics, solo hits, and blues standards in a variety of different band formats: with a stripped-down quartet, an expanded nine-piece, a stellar blues ensemble (including fellow axe heroes Buddy Guy, Robert Cray, and Jimmie Vaughan), and a full orchestra. The result is a fine showcase for the dazzling instrumental skills of one of rock's essential guitarists. -Scott Schinder.

Review Briefcase Full of Blues / Blues Brothers:"The Blues Brothers" began as an affectionate joke-cum-tribute to R&B music, and taken in that spirit it retained its entertainment value, even after this live album topped the charts, sold two million copies, and produced hit singles in "Rubber Biscuit" and "Soul Man". The guardians of popular music have always been entirely too reverent and humourless, however, and it wasn't long before they were levelling charges of rip-off against the Brothers and complaining that John Belushi couldn't sing as well as Otis Redding. So what? No one seems to have noticed that Belushi was as obsessive about citing his sources as Frank Sinatra is about naming his arrangers - you'd have thought those critics would have appreciated the footnotes. The beneficiaries of Belushi's encomiums didn't mind the increased exposure or the renewed royalty checks ("I suggest you buy as many blues albums as you can", Belushi told the audience), and even today, what comes across in these performances is the sincerity of feeling - that and some tasty playing from a top-notch band. -William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide.

Review Hoodoo Man Blues / Junior Wells:This 1965 album is where vocalist and harmonica player Junior Wells comes into his own. An early collaboration with Buddy Guy, the two of them sum up the 1960s funk-rock-blues that lay ahead. Hoodoo Man Blues inspired Paul Butterfield, Eric Clapton and a host of other musician-fans. Wells and Guy don't shy from creating James Brown-funkified blues, or from putting a rock edge to their blues; but neither do they shy from traditional blues. Their version of "Good Morning Little School Girl" is a proper update-still menacing, with less of a country blues feel. Also not to be missed is the instrumental workout "Chitlin Con Carne". -Robert Gordon.

Review Gris-Gris / Dr. John:Covered in a variegated spray of New Orleans Mardi Gras feathers and shiny voodoo baubles, Mac Rebennack's highly personal mythology was finally made real on this 1968 album. This was his first appearance made under the new guise of Dr John Creaux, The Night Tripper. Before then, he'd been a pivotal figure on the Crescent City R&B circuit. Afterwards, he became one of its most significant blues ambassadors. This album is a classic of the admittedly specialist psychedelic swamp-gumbo genre, boasting at least four tracks that have become cult favourites. "Gris-Gris Gumbo Ya-Ya", "Mama Roux", "Jump Sturdy" and "I Walk On Guilded Splinters" each have their own delicate mixtures of catchy chorus and weird spatial sound effects, with radical stereo separation, intensely croaking, close-quarter vocals from the Doctor, pneumatic keyboard riffs, pinprick electric guitar and booming, thick-skinned Afro-Caribbean percussion. The album still stands at its original 33-minute length, with no bonus cuts unearthed, but its high density more than compensates for any brevity. -Martin Longley.

Review The Very Best of Lightnin' Hopkins: Blues Masters / Lightnin' Hopkins:Hopkins may have enjoyed unprecedented world-wide popularity as a blues and folk artist during the 1960s, but his best work was mostly recorded in the previous two decades. This Rhino selection, put together by James Austin, culls tracks recorded for labels such as Aladdin, Sittin' In With, Gold Star, Jax, Folkways and Bluesville, from 1946 to 1961. Specialists will want the complete Gold Star and Aladdin material in particular, but this is a fine sampling of Hopkins in a variety of settings most typical of his career. The 1946 "Katie May Blues" documents his early partnership with pianist Thunder Smith (hence the nickname "Lightnin'" for plain Sam Hopkins) and also shows why he felt the need to strike out on his own soon after. For most of his life Lightnin' preferred playing as a solo, and his uncanny, tersely moving guitar accompaniment for his stark, often cryptic vocals shows that this was a wise as well as economically ideal choice. The brooding "Automobile", from 1949, drives this point nicely home. In a well-balanced selection, two of the four 1961 tracks feature Sonny Terry. -Keith Shadwick.
