Review Talking Timbuktu / Ali Farka Toure and Ry Cooder:Talking Timbuktu is a groundbreaking record that vividly illustrates the Africa-Blues connection in real time. Ali Farka Toure, one of Mali's leading singer-guitarists, has a trance-like, bluesy style that, although deeply rooted in Malian tradition, bears astonishing similarity to that of John Lee Hooker or even Canned Heat. It's a mono-chordal vamp, with repetitive song lines cut with shards of blistering solo runs that shimmer like a desert mirage. Toure may be conversant with some blues artists, but it is unlikely that artists like Hooker or Robert Pete Williams ever heard these Malian roots, which makes the connection so uncanny. Ry Cooder, well versed in domestic and world guitar styles, is the perfect counterpoint in these extended songs/jams, his sinewy slide guitar intertwining with his partner's in a super world summit without barriers or borders. -Derek Rath.

Review Songs for a Blue Guitar / Red House Painters:At first glance, Songs for a Blue Guitar appears much like previous Red House Painters albums, meandering and largely self-indulgent. Eight of the album's 11 songs stray over the five-minute mark (with two more than twice that length), and there are the covers of Yes's "Long Distance Runaround", Ric Ocasek's "All Mixed Up", and Paul McCartney's "Silly Love Songs". Kozelek may have strange taste when it comes to picking out covers ("Silly Love Songs"?), but on this album he's also showing a commitment and sense of deliberate purpose that hasn't always been evident. Even in the album's centrepiece, the more than 12-minute long "Make Like Paper" that contains a guitar solo that supposedly is responsible for the Painters' separation from record label 4AD, there's not a false move. The song unfolds gently, revealing more facets of itself than the spare instrumentation would seem to allow, though the guitar's absolutely delicious Neil Young/Robert Quine/Richard Lloyd crunch doesn't hurt, either. That crunch shows up again in "Long Distance Runaround" and "Silly Love Songs", but the rest of the album is built around a gently arresting acoustic guitar that mirrors the soft-voiced Kozelek. -Randy Silver.

Review Muddy Waters at Newport 1960/Muddy Waters Live / Muddy Waters:Muddy Waters (born McKinley Morganfield) was already the greatest living practitioner of the blues when he stepped on stage at the 1960 Newport Blues and Jazz Festival. But while his recordings had made an impact in blues circles, their effect on rock & roll had yet to pronounce itself in his native land via the British Invasion. Instead, Waters toiled in front of small yet devoted crowds who sat mesmerized by his incredible vocal control. The version of "I've Got My Mojo Working" included here illustrates his backing ensemble's strength. But it's really the way Waters curls his voice around a note in such standards as "I Got My Brand on You", "I'm Your Hoochie Coochie Man", and "Baby Please Don't Go" that make this a surefire classic. -Rob O'Connor.
