Review East-West / Paul Butterfield:

If the Butterfield Blues Band's groundbreaking debut earned the respect of the group's elder influences, this one won over (and guided) the blues boys' psychedelic peers. Highlighted by the 13-minute-plus title track (an Eastern-influenced jam cowritten by guitarist Mike Bloomfield), East-West stretches the boundaries of the blues. It would prod many lesser groups to explore, with generally dreary results, interminable free-flight explorations. But while East-West and a cover of jazzman Cannonball Adderly's "Work Song" ventured in new directions, Paul Butterfield and company remained rooted in solid Chicago blues. This attractive three-CD compilation does exactly what it claims to do-that is, contain more than three hours of relaxing music. Surprisingly, it also includes a few left-field gems in with the usual suspects, thus in addition to Grieg's "Morning" from the Peer Gynt Suite No. 1 (smoothly played by the Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra) and "Vocalise" by Rachmaninov (USSR Symphony Orchestra) there are also performances of the much less well-known "La Calinda" from Delius' opera Koanga (Northern Symphonia of England) and Five Variants of "Dives and Lazarus" by Vaughan Williams (Philharmonia Orchestra under Leonard Slatkin). Apart from a few questionable choices (the New Company's wobbly version of Tallis' 40-part motet "Spem in alium") the performances are all fine, and some excellent. The historical range stretches from the renaissance to the present day, and the juxtapositions are generally handled with imagination and sensitivity. Well worth anyone's money. -Warwick Thompson.

Review The Spirit of Christmas / Ray Charles:

The cover of this holiday classic pictures Ray Charles with a sleigh-full of gifts. That's an appropriate image, since he's so generous with the soulful sounds contained inside. Ray's gravelly growl may turn sweet on such merry romps as "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" and "Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town," but he doesn't fully hit his groove until he delves into the set's more grown-up material. He gives "Winter Wonderland" a soul transfusion the likes of which you won't see on many televised Christmas specials, and really lights a fire under "Baby, It's Cold Outside.
