Review The Essential Bessie Smith / Bessie Smith:Here is a well-chosen selection of 36 recordings from the total of 154 that Bessie Smith made which manages to enclose a selection that is both entertaining and significant. The majestic lady was the greatest of the blues singers by far and was separated from the rest by a chasm as wide as the one that removed Louis Armstrong for the rest of the trumpet players. It's appropriate that four of the exquisite titles Armstrong recorded with the singer, including "St. Louis Blues", are included here. But even on the tracks where Miss Smith's accompaniments weren't up to it, she soars away in an ecstasy that made their lack of presence irrelevant. On the other hand, there are fine jazz players like cornettist Joe Smith (often called "The Black Bix") and trombonist Charlie Green to be found here at their best on many tracks and expert and succulent accompanists like pianist James P. Johnson and guitarist Eddie Lang also have their say. The set concludes with the four titles from Smith's last session. These are quite wonderful and the backing was totally different to anything she'd experienced before, being by trumpeter Frankie Newton, tenor saxist Chu Berry and an on-form Jack Teagarden. -Steve Voce.
