Review The Mozart Effect: Music For Children, Vols. 1-3 / Don Campbell & Mozart:

Two hundred years after Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's death, French physician Dr. Tomatis discovered a relationship between listening and learning. Remarkably, he found that children develop their listening ability in the womb. According to medical studies, we now know that the music of Mozart in particular has a profound effect on the human mind, body, and spirit. Working in accordance with this philosophy, internationally known teacher and musician Don Campbell wrote The Mozart Effect, a seminal book correlating music with health, well-being, and increased intelligence. Campbell's musical collection of the same name presents compositions carefully chosen for the benefit of children. Volume 1, "Tune Up Your Mind," is formulated to gently stimulate young minds. Volume 2, "Relax, Daydream, and Draw," includes excerpts from Symphony Nos. 6 and 18, and volume 3, "Mozart in Motion," a delightfully playful disc, includes an excerpt from "The Magic Flute. " -Paige La Grone.

Review B2 - Brazilification 2 [Double CD] / Fila Brazillia:

Brazillification 2 is the second instalment in Fila Brazillia's remix series. The duo-Man and Steve Cobby-have a knack for coming up with delightful, hybridised tunes that balance a killer club ethos with a distinctive musicality. Already eight albums deep in terms of their own artistic accomplishments, they have also turned in a vast amount of remixes for other people over the years. Hence the Brazillifiation series, which collects their best-or, at least, favourite-reworkings under one roof. Comprised of two discs, Brazilification 2 contains a dazzlingly broad range of sounds and styles that sashay exotically across the speakers, creating an evocative soundscape built from the duo's reworkings of Fluke's "Tosh", Cal Tjader's "Soul Sauce", Hoodrum's "How Jazz It?", United Future Organisation's "Cosmic Gypsy", Mellow's "Mellow", Jaffa's "Elevator" and King Louis' "Paraplegic Soul", among many others. With the uptempo numbers on the first CD and the more supine grooves on the second, this is as good a collection of Fila's enigmatic magic as any. -Paul Sullivan.

Review Work 1989-2002 / Orbital:

Can it really be 13 years since Orbital first blended the naïve charm of synth pop with rave's new ways? Now grandly remodelled as "the godfathers of British techno", early glo-stick anthems such as "Chime" seem as distant as lilac- hooded sweatshirts, yet placed alongside all their other unorthodox singles, things begin to make sense on Work. The brothers Hartnoll always had more to them than most of their drug-addled, often novelty contemporaries. With a swaggering sense of melody and their trademark clockwork rhythms, they made emotive instrumental dance music that feels as fresh today as it ever did. Admittedly, looking back on this best-of retrospective, some of the breakbeats do sound a bit clunky, yet the haunting, classical lilt woven through gems like "Nothing Left" and the heart-stopping "Belfast" are testament to their genius. The only disappointment here (aside from 2 Unlimited sound-a-like, "Choice") is the pointless vocal remix of "Kinetic", now renamed "Frenetic". One word: why? -Paul Tierney.

Review behind the sun / Chicane:

Since the release of his debut album, Far From The Maddening Crowds, Chicane's Nick Bracegirdle has been a bit of a busy chap. After tastefully reupholstered the Clannad classic "Theme From Harry's Game" into a melodic-trance masterpiece, he then confounded all expectations by taking rock atheist Bryan Adams to the top of the charts with the friskily euphoric "Don't Give Up". These pop-dance lovelies only paint half the picture though. In between the strident hooks and glacial breakdowns which characterise his Ibizan leanings, Bracegirdle also demonstrates a not-to-be-wasted classical training. The rest of the album pitches moist, velvety pads against ear-tickling flute and a smooth, cocooning ambience. The wistful "Autumn Tactics" glides along like a loved-up Beth Orton-distant guitars chiming over whispered breakbeats, while "Low Sun" taking the baton from A Man Called Adam is like a pure Balearic dawn. All in all, prerequisite summer listening. -Paul Tierney.

Review Back to Mine - Groove Armada / Groove Armada:

Prior to the breakthrough success of their second album, "Vertigo", Groove Armada [Tom Findlay and Andy Cato] were better known as successful club DJs, plying their trade in clubs the length and breadth of the country, from Tangled in Manchester to The End in London. For their first mix CD they eschew up-tempo dancefloor tunes in favour of a far more laid-back repertoire-think "At The River" rather than "If Everybody Looked The Same". Back to Mine is an eclectic mixture of classic and modern-from Barry White to Tears For Fears stopping at all stations along the way. Unlike many of these compilations, there's not a duff track on there, with stand-out tracks like Al Green's "Light My Fire" and Tony D's "Piano Grand" the cherry on the icing on the cake. Vertigo was justifiably lauded as the "Best Chill Out Album" at the Ministry Magazine Awards in 1999-Back To Mine is a worthy heir to the throne. -Helen Marquis.

Review The Original Sound of Sheffield: the Best of the Virgin/EMI Years / Cabaret Voltaire:

Now that techno is both a dance genre and a central part of the "intellectual pop" landscape, Sheffield electronica renegades Cabaret Voltaire are routinely described as a massive influence on the rave era. Oddly, this excellent compilation of their early work accidentally reveals that they were more followers than followed. Formed in pre-punk 1973 by Richard H Kirk, Stephen Mallinder and Chris Watson and named after a Dadaist club, it is true that they were experimenting with early synths, loops, cut-ups and political paranoia before most other arty types. But the good stuff starts with 1979's "Nag Nag Nag", which was simply 1977 punk rock played on machines. By the time we've reached 1980's "Obsession" (which blatantly rips off Metal Box by Public Image Ltd), we get the idea. This isn't just a primer for the Cabs; it's a handy summing-up of post-punk, an enthusiastic meld of PiL, The Fall, Gang of Four, The Pop Group, dub, Suicide and the pre-pop Human League. So. deep, meaningful and influential? No. [+]
Mutant art-pop fun? Definitely. And what's wrong with that? -Garry Mulholland.

Review The Power Out / Electrelane:

Bounteously crammed with French lyrics, 16th-century Spanish poetry and quotes from Nietzsche's Die Fröhliche Wissenschaft, Electrelane's second album, The Power Out, could have been just another load of scholarly indie swat from Pseud's Corner. However, the Brighton belles manage to swerve onrushing accusations of pretension by continuing to fashion themselves as the lost link between the Slits, Stereolab and the ancient Farfisa soundcapes of Pink Floyd. By approaching the DIY ethos of punk and electronica like mad aunts on a crash course at music college, Electrelane's "anything goes" ethos is only rarely undermined by suspicions that their ambition is outstripped by their maladroit assets. So when The Power Out is good it's great, as on "This Deed" (think Joy Division draped in whitest ermine), in the tics and twitches of the punk funk "On Parade" and in the inclination towards a hazy, lazy, Hispanic version of Gorky's Zygotic Mynci in "Oh Sombra". And when it's great it's really quite exceptional: "The Valleys" cojoins Great War poet Siegfried Sassoon's "A Letter Home" with the sort of choristry not expanded upon since Roger Waters and Ron Geesin first locked foreheads for Atom Heart Mother. -Kevin Maidment.
