Review Like Love Lust and the Open Halls of the Soul / Jesse Sykes:Jesse Sykes is hard to pin down-and that's a good thing indeed. She overlaps with current trends, but is completely her own artist. There are elements of alt-country, psych-folk, and singer-songwriter-troubadour, but also others that add alluring breadth to her sound, most notably in the band's penchant for drawing upon the best aspects of Haight-Ashbury ballroom sonics. "How Will We Know" swirls and builds with guitar tones that evoke John Cippolina (Quicksilver Messenger Service) and Barry Melton (Country Joe & the Fish). Sykes has taken those sounds (which were often the best part of the era's rather feeble cowboy machismo) and added finesse, poetics, and a woman's vantage point. Her lyrics are rife with cold winds and loneliness, but never without hope, even if that element is handled by the warm glow of the music. The band is a sympathetically balanced entity with supple power and grace. They move between loud and soft without the now cliched extreme dramatics originally pioneered by the Pixies-another example of Sykes eschewing trends and forging her own path. -David Greenberger.

Review Quicksand/Cradlesnakes / Califone:Peyote-addled dustbowl country, haunting tribal percussion improvisations, rugged rock & roll: hear these three distinct brands of Americana roughly hammered into one on Quicksand/Cradlesnakes, the fourth album from Chicago's Califone. Born from the ashes of Drag City's supremely haunting blues travellers Red Red Meat, this shape-shifting group-built around the core duo of Ben Massarella and Tim Rutili-is a hard one to pin down. "Your Golden Ass", for instance, is the sort of inelegant, leathery garage drone that sounds like The Modern Lovers collectively overdosing under a blanket down an alley on the Lower East Side. But "Horoscopic Amputation Honey" rolls mandolins, cellos and sparse electronics into an offbeat, yet oddly hymnal campfire sing along, while "Cat Eats Coyote" pushes the envelope even further, an on-the-spot foray into scrap-yard percussion and ghostly sax wails. All these stylistic skips mean that Quicksand/Cradlesnakes feels relatively disordered-a contradictory mix of city savvy and rural roughness, fresh technology and junkyard-raking poverty. Anyone that felt Wilco's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot or Calexico's Feast of Wire should have indulged their experimental urges further, however, should be well served by this exploration of Americana's curious margins. -Louis Pattison.

Review Selections Circa 1990-2000 / Giant Sand:Not really a "greatest hits" collection (none of these songs ever came close to threatening even the forgotten nether-regions of the music charts), Selections Circa 1990-2000 stands as an excellent introduction to Giant Sand and the bewildering yet beguiling compositions of their visionary frontman, Howe Gelb. Giant Sand are one of the leading lights of the Americana revival, a fact that's testified to by the quality of the band's members and admirers. Howe Gelb's sidemen, John Convertino and Joe Burns, have found acclaim as the founders of Calexico, modern blues guitarist Rainer Ptacek was a frequent collaborator, and Giant Sand have recorded with Lucinda Williams, Lisa Germano, Victoria Williams, Evan Dando, Juliana Hatfield and legendary producer John Parish, amongst others. Selections features a mix of original Giant Sand numbers-including two songs ("Shiver" and "Temptation Of Egg") from 1999's career-best Chore Of Enchantment-as well as one track from Howe Gelb's OP8 side project ("Sand") and a few cover versions (Neil Young's "Music Arcade" and Roger McGuinn's "Change Is Now").
