Review Films About Ghosts (The Best of Counting Crows) [CD+DVD] / Counting Crows:Four studio albums into their hugely successful career, Counting Crows' present the requisite "Best Of" package, Films About Ghosts. Spanning the 10 years since August and Everything After slow-burnt its way into homes across the world, it also features two new songs (as is the standard these days), their recent cover of "Big Yellow Taxi" and a live bonus track. Newie "Friend of the Devil" is a rousing, acoustic addition that distantly echoes "Walking in Memphis", and "She Don't Want Nobody Near" is rockier, balancing out some of the more sedated moments here. Interestingly, there are a mammoth five tracks from August
compared with just two from 2002's Hard Candy ("Holiday in Spain" and "American Girls"-ill advised covers don't count) and a couple from This Desert Life. This is hardly surprising considering the disparity between their first and last albums, although they have not suffered in quite the same way that Hootie and the Blowfish have done. Recovering The Satellites is thankfully better represented and tracks such as "A Long December" and "Angels of the Silences" deserve their status so high up in the tracklisting. Films About Ghosts is an essential starting point for anyone coming to the Crows for the first time, and a fine collection that will no doubt please most of their earliest fans too. -Cortman Virtue.

Review Salute the Majesty of Bob Wills: a Tribute to Bob Wills / Bob Wills:"Ahhh. " In case you couldn't tell, that was a Willsian exhortation with an English accent. Jonboy Langford is at it again: This second PVC release follows Misery Loves Company, their take on Johnny Cash. Fans of the Mekons and Waco Brothers may be surprised at how relatively tame this tribute is-there are actual melodies, fluid improvisations, and, dare we say, sensitivity. By no means is this disappointing: Langford is smart enough to realize that by "playing it straight," enough of his and his cohorts' personal styles and influences will inevitably show through. Of special note are the peculiar dabbles of Mark Durante's steel and the multi-instrumental talents of John Rice. Kindred spirits such as Robbie Fulks, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Alejandro Escovedo, and Neko Case join the fun (and it sounds like they had lots of fun) on a jolly album that offers enthusiasm, geniality, and simple, suitable respect for the King of Western Swing. -Marc Greilsamer.

Review Road Music / Grand Drive:A most aptly-named album, this is dreamy and evocative stuff as good as anything that's been done since Son Volt's Trace masterpiece, another album that had the ability to lift the listener out of their armchair and into a battered old Chevy cruising the blue highways late at night. In reality, this isn't a proper album, but this young London-based outfit's first three limited edition EPs with two extra tracks, yet it seems perfectly sequenced with driving rustic rock that recalls The Band and the Jayhawks, warmed by gorgeous harmonies and a sweetness that emerges through liberal use of organs. This is sensitive and beautifully unpretentious music with lyrics that conjure up a mood without labouring the point. -Tim Perry.

Review It's a Wonderful Life [VINYL] / Sparklehorse:Over the course of three gloriously dream-dazzled albums, of which the irony-free titled It's A Wonderful Life is the quietest, sleekest and-despite a relative lack of pop hooks-probably Sparklehorse's best. Mark Linkous, the boy with a toy box full of ramshackle instruments, has sweetly, solemnly staked his affinity to the entire living universe. Bees, trees, birds, frogs, rabbits, ghosts, roosters, monkeys, babies, snakes, apples, ponies, dogs, the lot; wrapped in blissful, non-species-ist wonder that would do a Buddhist proud. The added extra here-besides a steel-drenched "Comfort Me", the old-time wheeze of "Babies on the Sun", Tom Waits' gleeful fee-fi-fo-fum through "Dog Door" and PJ Harvey's metallic whip of a voice electrifying "Piano Fire" and "Eyepennies"-is the realisation why it's been so long since you heard songs of such innocence and experience. And it hits you somewhere around the line "A child who spoke in tongues and smelled like the sun": William Blake is alive and well and making music in West Virginia. -Jennifer Nine.

Review Unsung Heroine / Midnight Choir:Putting a Norwegian band in a Slovenian studio would not strike many as an obvious recipe for alt country greatness, but the estimable Glitterhouse label aren't wrong very often, and it is well worth trusting their judgement here. Midnight Choir's previous albums have elevated them to major league status in their homeland, and Unsung Heroine will be where the rest of the world finally tunes in, if the rest of the world has any sense at all. With the occasional assistance of Glitterhouse labelmate Carla Torgerson of The Walkabouts (a useful reference point for Midnight Choir) and former Pretenders guitarist Robbie McIntosh, Midnight Choir have done something quietly marvellous here. Though their most obvious kin are American mavericks like Mercury Rev and (especially) Lambchop, they have managed to imbue Unsung Heroine with a gloomy grandeur of their own. "Snow In Berlin" and "Painting By Matisse" could well be harbingers of a whole new genre: Euro-Country. -Andrew Mueller.
