Review Last Chance for a Thousand Years: His Greatest Hits of the 90's / Dwight Yoakam:

All those folks who contemptuously dismiss today's mainstream country and wish they could have been around for the heyday of Lefty Frizzell and Buck Owens are missing the boat. Right now, right in front of us, the Frizzell-like George Strait and Owens-esque Dwight Yoakam are quietly assembling two of the great careers in country music history. Further evidence is now available in the form of Yoakam's second greatest-hits package (the first, Just Lookin' for a Hit, collected his 10 best singles from 1986-89). The new collection gathers 11 of his 13 US Top 40 country hits from 1991-96 (strangely omitting "Nothing's Changed Here" and "Try Not to Look So Pretty") and adds three new songs. The new ones are good ones-Yoakam gives the ballad "Thinking About Leaving", co-written with Rodney Crowell, a striking low-note guitar riff; he makes Waylon Jennings's "I'll Go Back to Her" even more traditional than it was; and he lends Queen's rockabilly romp, "Crazy Little Thing Called Love", an authenticity it never had. Yoakam is living proof that it's still possible to combine commercial success and artistic achievement in country. -Geoffrey Himes.

Review Gold: Limited Edition / Ryan Adams:

Torrential creativity has fast-forwarded the artistic evolution of former Whiskeytown frontman Ryam Adams from country-rock boy wonder to despondent troubadour with a 1960s fixation (his solo debut Heartbreaker), but it may also explain why listeners often need to wade through some pedestrian material just to find a few pearls of poetic excellence. Gold is no exception to that trend, a sometimes engaging middle-of-the-road roots-pop album that's both overlong (70 minutes) and at times overindulgent. There are high spots-such as the bouncy, breezy opener "New York, New York" and the plaintive ballad "When the Stars Go Blue" (which features a vocal turn reminiscent of Morrissey)-but much of the disc gets lost in forests of indistinct guitars and plodding percussion that never nudges Adams into actually rocking. Gold is the work of a notoriously prolific songwriter who hasn't yet learned to play to his strengths, one whose execution doesn't yet match his vision. -Anders Smith Lindall.

Review Come on Christmas / Dwight Yoakam:

Dwight Yoakam's work as an interpretive singer has been solid and, as far as Christmas music albums go, this one is informed with Yoakam's great vocal talents and a country band that can get these tunes to swing in any juke joint. The rumba of "Here Comes Santa Claus" is a tad forced, but Yoakam's good humor is in evidence. This album may lack the gravitas of his best work, but it shows that even a cowboy feels like kicking off his existential boots sometimes and getting down with standards from years bygone. -Rob O'Connor.

Review Like Love Lust and the Open Halls of the Soul / Jesse Sykes:

Jesse Sykes is hard to pin down-and that's a good thing indeed. She overlaps with current trends, but is completely her own artist. There are elements of alt-country, psych-folk, and singer-songwriter-troubadour, but also others that add alluring breadth to her sound, most notably in the band's penchant for drawing upon the best aspects of Haight-Ashbury ballroom sonics. "How Will We Know" swirls and builds with guitar tones that evoke John Cippolina (Quicksilver Messenger Service) and Barry Melton (Country Joe & the Fish). Sykes has taken those sounds (which were often the best part of the era's rather feeble cowboy machismo) and added finesse, poetics, and a woman's vantage point. Her lyrics are rife with cold winds and loneliness, but never without hope, even if that element is handled by the warm glow of the music. The band is a sympathetically balanced entity with supple power and grace. They move between loud and soft without the now cliched extreme dramatics originally pioneered by the Pixies-another example of Sykes eschewing trends and forging her own path. -David Greenberger.

Review Golden Age of Radio / Josh Ritter:

In Golden Age of Radio , this scruffy, well-travelled, literate Rhode Islander recalls the desultory whispers of Nick Drake, the ragged tunefulness of Ryan Adams and the natural wit of a young John Prine. He may come off as a slacker, painting his name on water towers and jamming to Townes Van Zandt on the porch, but his lyrical skills, unpretentiously poetic and refreshingly concise, suggest a purposefulness that's deeper than just folksy charm. Within the sparest musical framework-finger-picked guitar, whirling organ, lo-fi drums, some bass-Ritter evokes a delicately dense romanticism that's more on-edge than earnest. "This world must be frightening," he sings, "everybody's on the run/but I can't leave this world behind". There's quiet wisdom in Ritter's world; fans of post-Dylan singer-songwriters will want to listen close. -Roy Kasten.
