Review Rabbit Fur Coat / Jenny Lewis With the Watson Tw:

Previously best known as the front-woman of Rilo Kiley, Rabbit Fur Coat sees Jenny Lewis breaking out on her own to stunning effect. Teaming up with gospel singers Chandra and Leigh Watson, with a little help from producer M. Ward, and collaborations with Bright Eyes' Conor Oberst and DCFC's Ben Gibbard, this is alt. country at its finest-sweet, heartfelt and deceptively simplistic. Drawing inspiration from the record collection she shared with her mother whilst growing up, the album definitely has an old Americana feel to it, and several tracks wouldn't be out of place on a Harry Smith anthology. Stand out tracks include the stunning gospel-tinged harmonies of "Rise Up With Fists!", the gorgeous "Melt Your Heart" (reminiscent of Mazzy Star's "Fade Into You") and the full on toe-tapping country hoedown assault of "The Big Guns". To be fair, though, all the tracks on here earn their place, and even the somewhat strange inclusion of a cover of the Travelling Wilburys' "Handle With Care" works somehow. A truly exceptional gem of a record. -Melanie Wilkin.

Review Together at the Bluebird / Steve Earle:

Together at the Bluebird is a live recording of the gathering of three titans of modern American songwriting: Steve Earle, Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark. On September 13, 1995, this like-minded triumvirate of country-folk singer/songwriters joined forces for a good old-fashioned song swap. The music's warmth and relaxed vibe make it sound like it was recorded on someone's back porch in Texas as opposed to Nashville's Bluebird Café. Pulled together for an Interfaith Dental Clinic benefit by Guy Clark's wife Susanna, the three old friends sing songs and tell stories in an intimate acoustic-and-a-stool atmosphere in front of an appreciative audience-what more can you ask for when you have such compelling songwriters? The ravenous cult fans of these artists will want to add these delightful performances to their collections, but newcomers will get an engaging and useful primer on the modern Texas troubadour style. -Marc Greilsamer.

Review Hoarse / 16 Horsepower:

Hoarse was recorded on 16 Horsepower's 1998 tour, mostly in their home town of Denver, and could be thought of as either a complement or an introduction to their studio works. Marvellous though 16 Horsepower's studio albums are, the band has always been at their best on stage. Live, the elemental ferocity of their unique gothic country sound has room to breathe, and frontman David Eugene Edwards' medicine show preacher persona is all the more effective. 16 Horsepower's performances of their own songs here are terrific-especially "American Wheeze" and "Black Soul Choir"-but the real value for fans here lies in the three cover versions: Joy Division's "Day of the Lords" and The Gun Club's "Fire Spirit" both sound like they were meant to be played on banjos, slide guitar and accordions; while Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Bad Moon Rising" is shorn of the jauntiness of the original and presented as an epic, baleful hymn. -Andrew Mueller.

Review Copperhead Road / Steve Earle:

It happens to every hardened party goer-your lifestyle eventually catches up to you. For Steve Earle, this third effort from the then-roué-ish troubadour was a pretty glaring rehab-ahead warning light. The sloppiness was beginning to show: half the disc bogs down in throwaways, cheap echoes of Guitar Town's country-rock acumen. The rest, fortunately, is prime, focused Earle: the Vietnam-vet title track, the Wild West-themed "Snake Oil", the rousing "Johnny Come Lately" which features backing from the Pogues and the oft-covered classic "The Devil's Right Hand", in which the composer achieves that perfect balance of city-slick pop and hillbilly twang. Earle would hit that one-two combo again, but not until he shook that party monkey a few albums later. -Tom Lanham.

Review Cold Dog Soup / Guy Clark:

If this front-porchy set disappoints, it's only because, as dean of singer-songwriters, Guy Clark has established such imposing standards. Rather than offering the exacting, patient craftsmanship we've come to expect, many of these new tunes feel like playful ephemera, the result of a friendly all-night song swap-though it hardly hurts if your friends include Emmylou Harris, Verlon Thompson, and Darrell Scott. Closer inspection, however, reveals a more serious purpose. Starting with Steve Earle's "Fort Worth Blues", through "Water Under the Bridge" (in which all things pass away), on to Richard Dobson's "Forever, for Always, for Certain", a recognition of the tricks that time can play, Cold Dog Soup is suffused with visions of mortality. The album ends with three exquisite hymns to life in the face of death. In "Red River", Clark celebrates his family history; in "Die Tryin'" life is defined as risk; and in "Be Gone Forever", penned by Anna McGarrigle and Keith Sykes, Clark finds consolation in memory and music. Even if much of Cold Dog Soup isn't up to Clark's best, this closing autumnal suite, played with devil-may-care élan and joy, certainly is. -Roy Kasten.

Review Feast of Wire [VINYL] / Calexico:

It takes time to digest this Feast of Wire. The melodic appeal of Calexico's fourth album is not instantaneous, these evocative sounds taking time with their bodily infusion. The studio manifestation of Calexico is centred around impressively multi-instrumental busybody Joey Burns and the more single-minded (but equally sensitive) percussion specialist John Convertino. The current road-band members are also on hand to contribute their own shadings, along with a strong contingent of string players and backing singers. Recorded at home in Tucson, Arizona, all of the tunes are quite short, lending an episodic, soundtrack quality. The canvas is extremely broad, with horns and strings colouring the edges, while Burns tinkers about on accordion, organ, mandolin, melodica and synths. "Sunken Waltz" makes a modest opener, a traipsing ballad that's quickly overtaken by the rubberised bounce of "Quattro". "Black Heart" provides an early peak, its unearthly string arrangement backing a beautifully resigned Burns vocal. It's like an old 78 record, remixed last week, ending with a decelerated glide that crackles with electronic interference. "Attack El Robot! Attack!" is also rife with electro-roughage, blanketing its toytown guitar figures and brass fanfares. [+]
These instrumental vignettes have a habit of linking up the more reclined narrative-based songs. The more overtly Mexican material is saved until close to the finish, with the quavering trumpets and weeping violins of "Dub Latina" and "Guero Canelo" contributing to a more typically Calexico-ed sound, if such a thing is still possible. -Martin Longley.
