Review 23rd Street Lullaby / Patti Scialfa:It has taken some considerable time for Patti Scialfa to step out of the giant shadow of her husband, Bruce Springsteen. But 23rd Street Lullaby sees this sister finally doing it for herself, writing all the words and music as well as coproducing with blues specialist Steve Jordan. Employing fellow E Street Band regulars Nils Lofgren (who appeared alongside the Boss on Scialfa's 1993 debut Rumble Doll) and Soozie Tyrell, she here delivers a dozen fine songs, veering between keyboard-led pop and gritty urban rock & roll. All are marked, as you'd expect given her day-job, by exceptionally harmonious backing vocals. Also unsurprisingly, her lyrical themes are similar to her husband's. The down-at-heel seek small mercies in dead-end jobs, young couples find high romance and heartbreak on rain-swept streets, New York is treated with a Scorsese-like respect and affection. Many will enjoy the lilting, Corrs-recalling "Love (Stand Up)" and the driving, spiritual "State of Grace". Many more will love the closing "When You're Young in the City", a gorgeous gospel showtune that sums up and distils all that has gone before. Hopefully, Scialfa will not spend a decade over her third album. A successful solo career is beckoning. [+]-Dominic Wills.

Review Quicksand/Cradlesnakes / Califone:Peyote-addled dustbowl country, haunting tribal percussion improvisations, rugged rock & roll: hear these three distinct brands of Americana roughly hammered into one on Quicksand/Cradlesnakes, the fourth album from Chicago's Califone. Born from the ashes of Drag City's supremely haunting blues travellers Red Red Meat, this shape-shifting group-built around the core duo of Ben Massarella and Tim Rutili-is a hard one to pin down. "Your Golden Ass", for instance, is the sort of inelegant, leathery garage drone that sounds like The Modern Lovers collectively overdosing under a blanket down an alley on the Lower East Side. But "Horoscopic Amputation Honey" rolls mandolins, cellos and sparse electronics into an offbeat, yet oddly hymnal campfire sing along, while "Cat Eats Coyote" pushes the envelope even further, an on-the-spot foray into scrap-yard percussion and ghostly sax wails. All these stylistic skips mean that Quicksand/Cradlesnakes feels relatively disordered-a contradictory mix of city savvy and rural roughness, fresh technology and junkyard-raking poverty. Anyone that felt Wilco's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot or Calexico's Feast of Wire should have indulged their experimental urges further, however, should be well served by this exploration of Americana's curious margins. -Louis Pattison.

Review My Own Jo Ellen / Olson Mark & The Original Harmony Ridge Creekdippers:Formerly the frontman for alternative country's Jayhawks, Mark Olson here offers the musical equivalent of comfort food: hand-canned, home-cooked, soothingly hearty in an all-you-can-eat sort of way, with melodies like recipes passed down through generations. The Original Harmony Ridge Creekdippers (the warbling harmonies of wife Victoria Williams and the violin of buddy Mike "Razz" Russell) support Olson's reedy tenor on plainspoken songs of environmental concern ("Meeting in Lone Pine", "Ben Johnson's Creek") and familial intimacy ("Someone to Talk With", "Rainbow of Your Heart"). Though their fourth album occasionally flirts with rock & roll electricity, the Dippers continue their anti-slickness campaign, matching simple songs to complex times, with the best recalling the hard-won innocence of early Neil Young and earlier Buffalo Springfield. -Don McLeese.

Review Cold Roses [VINYL] / Ryan Adams & The Cardinals:Ryan Adams has had a bumpy ride since going solo, so it's a rather bold move for the American singer/songwriter to release a double album. But, on the whole, it's a move that works. Cold Roses is admirably consistent, an impressive feat over 19 songs. At his best, as on Disc One's "Sweet Illusions" and Disc Two's "Life is Beautiful", Adams invokes the spirit of Jeff Buckley in both sound and spirit, resulting in the album's two strongest tracks. Elsewhere, it's pretty much business as usual for Adams-a mellow and melancholy blend of country and low-key rock, sure to please fans of Gold more than people hoping for a harking back to his days with Whiskeytown. It's only on "Beautiful Sorta" that Adams really puts a foot wrong, with its chorus ready made as a too-obvious singalong for barefoot American college girls. Though its overall relaxed pace won't appeal to everyone, fans who first discovered Adams with Gold will find that Cold Roses has much to offer. -Robert Burrow.

Review Return of the Grievous Angel: A Tribute to Gram Parsons / Various Artists:The gentle hand of Emmylou Harris guides this tribute to ill-fated country-rock avatar Gram Parsons, which goes a long way toward explaining why this star-studded salute avoids the pitfalls that befall many such projects. Harris got her start harmonizing with the patron saint of alt country, contributing mightily to Parsons's two early 1970s solo albums and reviving selections from his small, but indispensable, oeuvre throughout her career. She has a vested interest in finding a true connection between her former benefactor and this cast of Parsons partisans. Here she bands together a flock of followers who range from obvious offspring (Wilco, Gillian Welch, Whiskeytown) to not-so-evident disciples (Beck, the Pretenders, Sheryl Crow). Parsons's partner in the Flying Burrito Brothers, Chris Hillman, teams with Steve Earle on "High Fashion Queen," and David Crosby (like Parsons and Hillman, an ex-Byrd) joins Lucinda Williams on "Return of the Grievous Angel. " Harris harmonizes with Beck on "Sin City" and shares the mic with Crow on "Juanita," one of the collection's highlights.
