Review Aw C'mon/No You C'mon / Lambchop:Aw C'Mon / No You C'Mon, the latest in Lambchop's long and meaty lineage, could loosely be described as a double-concept LP. Originally conceived when vocalist Kurt Wagner decided to write a song a day for a few months, it was then stretched further when the band was asked to write a soundtrack for a 1927 silent movie. The end result is a double LP that, consciously or not, adequately captures the diverse nature of this endlessly creative group. Wagner's distinctive voice is a constant (as are his lyrics, which range joyously from the sentimental to the sarcastic) but the background sounds are a constantly shifting tapestry, all rich strings and insouciant strums one minute, brooding melodies and sinister moods the next. If there's any band out there that seem to live for their work it's Lambchop. And while they don't necessarily get better with every album, they do retain a certain freshness and sense of innovation, traits that many of their peers could do with adopting. -Paul Sullivan.

Review Yankee Hotel Foxtrot: +CD [VINYL] / Wilco:Named in honour of the three-word codes used by short-wave radio operators, Wilco's fourth album Yankee Hotel Foxtrot sounds like a late-night broadcast of some weirdly wonderful pop station punctuated by static and the sonic bleed of competing signals. Songs that begin with simple, elegiac grace-"Ashes of American Flags" and "Poor Places"-end in a cathartic squall of distortion. The results can be initially jarring, but it's these tracks more than the sturdy jangle pop of "Kamera" or "Heavy Metal Drummer" that demand, and reward, repeated listens. Mixed by studio experimentalist Jim O'Rourke and produced by the band, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot harkens back to a time when the words "pop" and "sonic adventurism" weren't mutually exclusive. The Beatles and Kurt Cobain knew this, and clearly so do Jeff Tweedy and company. -Keith Moerer.

Review The Gilded Palace of Sin / Flying Burrito Brothers:Had Gram Parsons died after the release of this, his masterpiece, his revered reputation as the architect of country-rock would have been assured. Following a stint with the Byrds on the Sweetheart of the Rodeo album, Parsons took Byrd-man Chris Hillman to really breath some fresh air into the Nashville old guard. By turns a traditionalist and an innovator, Parsons is pictured on the sleeve wearing a suit by Nudie, tailor to country stars, embroidered with images of women and marijuana leaves. He took the country blueprint and mixed it up with blue-eyed soul and slight rock touches, dragging it into the modern era with songs of a cracked, fragile beauty. This new direction was an immediate influence on the Rolling Stones and its emotional and creative power continues to reverberate through generations. -Ben Clancy.

Review World Won't End / Pernice Brothers:The second record by Joe Pernice's bright-eyed neo-country troupe The Pernice Brothers, The World Won't End is an album that tackles themes of magnificent love, desperate frustration and spirit-mangling depression. This is far from an extended misery-tract, though; well-versed in the canon of Bacharach, Wilson and Big Star, Pernice has always revelled in loosing the most difficult of emotions into a rolling meadow of summertime pop. These 11 tracks are wrapped up in a gorgeous whirl of pedal steel, violin and cello that's elegant, cathartic and-best of all-really nice to listen to when the sun's out. "Our Time Has Passed" mulls painfully over the nostalgic memories of a dead love affair: "There's a box I still can't open/ There's a name that hurts to say/ I fall in love with the way I'm shaking/ In a crowd I think I see your face". "Working Girl (Sunlight Shines)", meanwhile, is a brief but beautifully observed vignette of a young temp stuck in a dead-end job, left "contemplating suicide or a graduate degree". Throughout, though, Pernice's sympathetic vocal, full of hope and purity, turn such empty impasses into a celebration of humanity. The message of The World Won't End? Simply, that life goes on. -Louis Pattison.

Review Low Estate / 16 Horsepower:Sixteen Horsepower's singer David Eugene Edwards brings such a mix of vitriol and faith to his music that were he born in a different place and time, I imagine he could have been a snake preacher. His songs explore that delicate and often explosive relationship between religion and real life, often with dire consequences: "I beseech the Lord clear my head / before once again I scar the soul of that girl in my bed," he sings on "Brimstone Rock" moments before letting loose a screech channeled from the devil by way of Nick Cave. The music is blistering, a take on hill-music that the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion could've created had they been raised on moonshine and pig snouts. -Tod Nelson.

Review Once We Were Trees / Beachwood Sparks:Beachwood Sparks' second album, Once We Were Trees, is a classic modern-day example of what Gram Parsons once called the Cosmic American music: florid, effects-laden psychedelic country rock with its heart in the rolling crop-fields of California, and it's head lost in the eddying clouds. The only thing that dates this as anything later than a relic of the mid 70s is an unexpected-and very fine-cover of Sade's "By Your Side": with Hammond organ, harmonica and pedal steel weaving in and out of the mix, this is unashamedly retro stuff. Still, there's much here to recommend Beachwood Sparks above the humdrum alt-country crop. With Dinosaur Jr's J Mascis on production duties, the likes of "Hearts Mend" and "The Good Night Whistle" sound authentically lo-fi and archaic-except the odd moment of indulgence, as on the title track, where he phases in a roar of electronic feedback over the closing instrumental swell. Even the more faithful countrified tracks hit the spot, though -the lush "Banjo Press Conference" recalls Calexico at their most exquisite, while the Deliverance-style twang of "Juggler's Revenge" nears real hoedown territory. Once We Were Trees: you'd better believe it's a grower. - Louis Pattison.
