Review Old Paint / Freakwater:

Freakwater makes a brand of acoustic-guitar-and-pedal-steel alt. country that's inspired, partly, by old-time country, though but by no means slavishly. For one thing, the group's frontwomen, Catherine Irwin and Janet Bean, write songs from thoroughly modern points of view. (The Carter Family never sang about slitting their wrists. ) For another, Irwin's and Bean's striking harmonies are so ragged as to go flat (purposely?). Usually this strident approach only enhances the lonely poignance of the songs, but occasionally they push the technique to annoyance. Maybe it's no surprise then that, on Old Paint, the best numbers generally dispense with harmonies altogether, leaving one singer's haunting voice to weep all alone. -David Cantwell.

Review Our Mother The Mountain / Townes Van Zandt:

After a wobbly debut, this indispensable Texas troubadour bounced back in 1969 with a sophomore disc that shows his songwriting style-audibly influenced by Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan, Hank Williams and any number of Texas bluesmen-emerging via a batch of memorable originals. His straightforward hound-dog vocals were never more affecting than on the early discs. An overabundance of atmospheric flute accompaniment mars the orchestration, but this is one of the few violin-laden folk albums from the late 60s that still holds up, at times projecting a dusty, Western aura, at others a more formal, almost classical vibe. The parade of classic Van Zandt tunes continues here with a second, more fully realised try at "St. John the Gambler", "Tecumseh Valley" and one of his earliest original talking blues songs, "Snake Mountain Blues. " Like that of all Van Zandt discs, the tone here is mournful from start to finish, but once you're hooked it becomes an essential part of the sweetness and greatness of this irreplaceable songwriter. -Robert Baird.

Review Scar / Joe Henry:

From roots rocker to song-writing impressionist to sonic adventurer, the musical progression of Joe Henry resists category and defies expectation, nevermore so than on Scar. The album-opening "Richard Pryor Addresses a Tearful Nation" is Henry's most audacious move to date, as his smoky voice channels the comedian's tragic spirit while a saxophone break from free-jazz titan Ornette Coleman provides achingly poignant punctuation. The rest of the song cycle ranges from the sophisticated atmospherics of "Stop" (adapted by Henry's sister-in-law Madonna into her hit single, "Don't Tell Me") to the insistent funk of "Rough and Tumble". The production by Henry and Craig Street gives the music plenty of room to breathe, augmenting the organic interplay of guitarist Marc Ribot, pianist Brad Mehldau and bassist Me'shell Ndegeocello with bittersweet string arrangements. Though there are echoes of Van Morrison in "Mean Flower" and the Band in "Cold Enough to Cross", Henry is less a classicist than a restless visionary. -Don McLeese.

Review The Trinity Session [CASSETTE] / Cowboy Junkies:

On their sophomore effort, Canada's Cowboy Junkies manage to make a one-day recording session in an old church one of their most satisfying listens. Featuring the sultry voice of Margo Timmins, the precise musicianship of her brothers Peter (on drums) and Michael (on guitar), and bassist Alan Anton, The Trinity Sessions is a spare, evocative, countrified-rock classic. Their inspired reworking of both "Blue Moon" and "Working On A Building" reveal the Timmins family to be talented interpreters and insightful neo-traditionalists. Mixing the ambitious songwriting of Margo and Michael Timmins with subdued covers of Lou Reed's "Sweet Jane" and Hank Williams' "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry," The Trinity Sessions is an exquisite collection that holds up quite well under repeated listenings. -Mitch Myers.
